The only thing I "hated" about PEI was leaving. It truly is a magical place with wonderful people. Don't miss The Chip Shack and the Queen of Fries in Charlottetown! So yummy! Mad love for PEI
Just for future reference, there are three ways to get to the Island. Ferry, the bridge and you can actually fly here as well. I know it's a super crazy concept that such a small Island would have an airport, but we do, and we support international flights as well.

snow mobile, Xcountry and down hill skiing
LoL - the hill is not worthy of calling it downhill skiing :) - I live in NB, spend at least a week every summer in PEI and know where you're talking about - I have family on the Island. Snow mobile, xcountry absolutely. Curling is big there too in the winter. But the downhill is barely a bunnyhill even by NB standards :D

I'm from P.E.I. born and raised and couldn't agree with you more . I would like to add one more " Love" about P.E.I. ...The music ,especially our music from our Celtic heritage . Hit the Old Triangle Pub in Charlottetown on Thursday evenings and you would think your in Ireland or the Small halls festival .

Glad you enjoyed your visit! I and my wife immigrated from China to PEI 3 years ago, and we love this place very much. Beautiful beach, flash air, affordable house(compare with Toronto and Vancouver), and most which impressed me is the very nice islanders. And now, I think this is my 2nd home(the other one in Shanghai, China), and I am an islander too. Sorry, my English still have some problem, hope you guys can understand what I say. :-)

Another thing with PEI, Anne of Green Gables is not plastered everywhere! Check out the small towns rich in history from their stories of rum runners to the architecture in the homes and buildings. Take time to talk to the locals not tour guides. We have so much more to offer than the overly commercialized parts like Cavendish.

PEI is my second home, best place on earth. My father was born there and I have lots of family still there.

We were the crazy tourists on PEI in January 2015. Yes, almost everything was closed, but the winter was amazing there too. Never seen amount of snow, two snowstorms (one on the bridge ha-ha), wild animals etc. We loved it, and our dog too. Charlottetown with its snow covered streets is a hidden gem at that time. After watching your video, maybe we will go at summertime too. :)
Great video! I grew up on PEI, I watched your video for nostalgia's sake as I've been away for most of my 20s. I'm glad you enjoyed yourself. Personally, I love the fact that there are no freeways or twinned highways. It makes for communities that naturally blend into each other. We're more connected because of it and it certainly suits our quaint energy. With our small population and the layout of all the villages it makes so much sense. Not sure if you've ever been to Salt Spring Island BC, but I encourage you to check it out. It's the paradise I've been seeking since I left home (no traffic lights!). We're small, we're friendly, and waiting for you. In fact, you can stay at my place. Canadian Island hospitality at it finest! Cheers eh. ;)
My grandfather came from PEI and I have been there about 20 times in the last 40 years. There have been lots of changes in that time and growth around Charlottetown. I agree with a lot of what you said but the Confederation Bridge has never been an issue for me - as a driver or passenger. In a regular car, you really can't see over the edge so really don't even know you are going over water. Cavendish area has also grown tremendously since the 60's. I usually go over and check things out just to see what's changed but don't stay for too long. There are other less touristy areas I'd rather explore. The only thing I "hate" about PEI is leaving. Always makes me sad!

The confederation bridge is amazing considering that fact that you used to have to take a ferry! It beats getting stuck in the ice on a boat for several hours in the middle of winter!!!
...and also destroyed the towns of Cape tormentine and much of borden-carlton. More convenient? yes. Better economy? Debatable. Many islanders lost their jobs as a result. There is still a ferry service between Caribou, NS and Wood Islands, PEI
I think that is so great as well!
How long is the drive ?
As an Islander, let me just say that the Anne and tourism thing is really just centralized to Cavendish. You won't get inundated with that stuff outside of the small Cavendish area. PS: the mouse is named Eckardt. 😊 Great video!

I visited PEI for more than two weeks to attend my sons graduation ceremony at university of PEI. I was able to explore the Island with my family members during the visit. I love it's beautiful places, beaches, and eating houses. Mostly I like the environment of the University. People are fond to be very courteous. I love to be here again and recommend my friends too. PEI is one of my absolute favorite places to visit!
I visited a friend in Brackley's Beach last year and we went to Charlottetown and places on the northern shore. P.E.I. is absolutely wonderful. It's like the best version of all of the best things about the Maritimes.

I remember visiting PEI the summer of 1988. People were debating the merits and demerits of the upcoming Confederation Bridge. Anyway, it wasn't done yet, so I took a ferry over from New Brunswick. Very beautiful, peaceful place. Lots of interesting history, as mentioned. It's a shame that most Canadians never even get the chance to visit PEI, being quite far and isolated from the major cities. Sometimes I wish I was born and raised in the countryside there, just to know what that lifestyle is really like. It seems so beautiful and the people are friendly.
I will embarrassingly admit (speaking as a Canadian) I didn't know Anne of Green Gables was fiction until I was in my 20s. I really thought she was as a historical Canadian. It still bothers me that she wasnt. Much love for PEI.

I've visited PEI 4 times so far and I'm going again this summer (I'm from Europe btw and have family living on PEI).
So true about the people, they're amazingly friendly and helpful. Last year our car broke down in the middle of the night. The next morning a guy pulled over, he turned out to be a car mecanic and he actully fixed our car for free. We only bought the stuff he needed and gave him 10 dollars for gas. Thank you PEI!
One of my favorite places to eat is the farmers market in Charlottetown. Great food & cheap :p
And I agree: the beaches are very beautiful. You can have a private beach when you get away from the touristy places. I even went camping on a beach (which is illegal, but very awesome). Camping in Canada is great btw, I really recommend it.
Have you visited the Acadian Museum in Summerside? I went there the first time I was on PEI. Haven't visited the Green Gables stuff yet (maybe this summer).
I forgot to say: PEI is very very safe! I met people there who don't even lock their car or house. I felt safe all the time (well, except from when I saw a coyote in the dark :p )

I'm a born and raised islander I love the beaches, and i love going to see freinds and family that live in a different area on the island, I love looking out the windows and seeing farms.I recommend going to dairy royal!

One of the negatives was lots of tourists.
It is true. We get overcrowded with them during the summer. It can be a bit much- especially in Cavendish and downtown Charlottetown. But tourist watching is also very fun if you’re a local 😛. Hehe
Last summer it felt so empty without tourists. But it was also nice to have the island to ourselves for one summer… even with things being a bit different because of covid.
And yes the bridge is expensive. Us islanders have to pay for a bridge, plane or ferry to just leave the island. 🤷🏼♀️ But people who go to the mainland often usually get a bridge pass. Saves a bit of money.
We are blessed with the most beautiful beaches and trails.
And a slower pace of life.
I don’t want to live anywhere else ❤️
Great video (even for an Islander!). While I completely understand your comment about the Confederation Bridge - a little anxiety is far more convenient than rushing to make the next ferry or even missing the and waiting for the next ferry :)

I had the same pet hate about the north island of New Zealand, beautiful empty roads but the few people you do see in the countryside stick to your tail! Why when the roads are very quiet, the rest was great. Love to go back again one day. Also we are coming to PEI this Oct, my wife's dream.

Love your videos! I've been binge watching them while I save for my next trip. But you guys! YOU HAVE to go to Newfoundland. Mabey you've already been, but seriously if you haven't it's absolutely breathtaking. And I'm not talking a few days like minimum two weeks three ideally. I know it's a lot to commit but from st John's and bonivsita/ trinity in the east, burin and the French islands of saint pierre and michelon in the south. Terra nova/ twillingate/ la scie and fleur de lys in the central north. GROS MORNE in the west and the home of the Vikings in st Anthony and lanse aux meadows in the north. I could go on forever. But ofcourse there are love and hates, but one thing you will LOVE when you are there is the people. The culture, the history and how it lives on through the people is totally unique and intriguing. Its so intrinsically different from the rest of Canada, and coupled with the breathtaking scenery it's well worth the visit. I rarely comment on CZcams videos but you've prompted me to write such a long comment to you folks because I truly believe in the island and your honest and helpful travel advice! I know you guys have a full plate but if you ever do want to go, I'm from there (while sadly I live in Toronto now) I do travel to different peninsulas and ends of the road there every year, the small outport communities are spectacular and unique in their own different ways so its my mission is to visit them all.) If you ever want to go I'd love to help you with anything you need from tips or recommendations to loves/hates or even to help arrange private trips with my various family who live there. Please go! If your kids loved Iceland I'm sure newfoundland will thrill them and you! Also travel videos there would help others go there and enjoy their stay and come back happy or recommend to it others! And really that's what would make a difference to the people there at the end of the day!

Thank You! This is such a perfectly done review! I'm strongly considering it -I pictured it as being dead-quite and empty - guess that's a misconception. Wanting to ride the Confederation Trail while staying at Airbnb's. But I've done no planning, just a spur-of-the-moment 11 hr. drive up. Thanks!

I went to Prince Edward Island In around August 2014, so, about the same time you went there with your family. It's a beautiful place! My favorite things about it were definitely the nature, the beatuy, the red rocks and sand and the food. We found a nice place by the sea (well actually, a good family friend kinda found it for us, because daddy is kinda useless with directions and looking for good things to do... lol) and I had so much great food. I really loved the grilled haddock and fresh potato chips, just like I was hoping for when I came there with their amazing potatoes and all that. ALso, like I said, we came at around the same time, so I just hope you didn't see me and my brother fight in front of the confederation house... haha. We were fighting because I wanted to read all the signs and everyone ws leaving. We fight for the stupidest reasons sometimes, but we still love each other. And plus, daddy got it all on film, so that kinda embarrassed us enough to want to forgive each other faster... haha! Amazing stuff man! And please pardon my obnoxiously comments... I hope they don't bother you too much. Peace! =^-^=
That bridge is a blessing like back when there were no cars people had to ride there horses over the ice to get to the mainland and that bridge toke years to build some people lost there lives in the construction of that bridge and honestly that is one of pei’s best features

wow, i never thought that the bridge would be scary, but i now that i think of it, i guess it might be intimidating for some people. one thing to remember when driving on island highways, is that our highways have virtually no exits (there are only one or two i can think of and they're right after the confed bridge); other roads don't gracefully merge with our highways, they meet perpendicularly as they do on smaller roads, so when someone enters, you have to slow down from highway speed to about half that, suddenly-and you have to do that very often because the bad drivers are impatient and cut in front of you.
I went to Green Gables and it was so cool and there were old things nad a gift shop

I love that bridge! I drive on the bridge almost once a week for work.. the thing I hate about it is that the sides are TOO HIGH, and when you're in a car you can't see the ocean! :P
I miss the ferries though, but the fixed link is an engineering marvel.. (by the way - it's the longest bridge in the world over ice-covered waters!)
That does not have a tunnel or is by suspension it is the longest normal bridge

Your the first I have heard that did not like the bride. And most winters are not that bad hear, but we do get the odd one with a lot of snow. the last 2 or 3 we had hardly any. How ever the one be for that PEI got dumped on big time. But snow can be a lot of fun, just enjoy it.

I'm a born and raised islander. Just curious: when you say "most things close in the winter" what exactly do you mean by "most"? Do you mean Cavendish? Because yes, Cavendish and other tourist attractions close, but those aren't most of PEI. In fact I would say those are the least of PEI, in more ways than one.

I'm sure most lodging and indoor attractions in Charlottetown and Summerside are still open. The island only has one small ski resort. Barroom concerts are one of the best attractions in most Atlantic Canada cities.
goestplus only the really touristy spots aren’t open, majority of beaches are open year round just covered in snow, there’s always lots to do in the winter, sledding, skiing, snowshoeing, horse and sleigh rides. If you look into more things you’d get a better idea. In the video he was only talking about the east end of the island (queen and kings county) prince county has many interesting things like a potato museum, many harbours, some restaurants sea food goes straight from the ocean to the boat and then into the restaurant
Most tourists come for the "tourist attractions" which you agree are closed. The video isn't directed at locals of course.
The winter is like any other place above the 39th
Try the west coast. The snow rarely stays on the ground for a day, and the temperature rarely strays below freezing.
The Cavendish potatoes are so good.
I've been to Prince Edward Island twice in my life, once as a child and again at 30. I just did a search on the miniature castles. It broke my heart to see that the place had been abandoned. It's nice to see Anne of Green Gables still being maintained.

Great video & information. Of course, who hasn't heard of &/or read the "Anne of Green Gables" books. Prince Edward Island always sounded like a very "quaint" place to me. But what surprised me was when you said how inexpensive it was, compared with other tourist places in Canada. I always imagined it would be more expensive because of its isolation/remoteness - nice to know that's not the case.
janburn007 I thought it would be too, but was VERY happy that it was cheaper than Toronto and Montreal and even cheaper than Quebec City. But really a great place to visit, just a bit far to drive to :)

I moved to Souris PEI last summer and so far I love it! I can give you info if you want to move here. I was living in Montreal before and several other places on rent. I finally own my own little place in PEI!

I love the bridge here I go to New Brunswick to spend some time with my mom I love with my dad on island and it only takes 15 minutes to get from one side to the other of the bridge

I visited PEI twice my advice is when driving get a good map or GPS and take the back roads from Confederate bridge. I found this to be very pleasant driving. Less traffic too.
Watch the red clay roads when they are wet, like driving on ice.
PEI is probably the most relaxing place I have ever visited. I have relatives going back as far as the original Acadian settlers!
@MilK Tea Personally I am a big fan of the western half of the island. Find a place to stay in Summerside as you base of operations and you cannot go wrong.

xNeptune I'm guessing because they have some of the warmest and least snowy winters in Canada.
Now it’s Covid -19 -2020 and I’m not allowed to travel back home to PEI. And am relying on PEI videos to feed my home sickness. My advice is if you go to PEI DON’T just stick to Cavendish. The EAST end of the island is actually the best place to go. Stay in a small cottage and embrace the local world.

you understated the hoards of tourists, they are everywhere and an all consuming pain to the islanders. i dont drive across the bridge like i used to still 25- 30 times a year never heard of it stressful, i highly recommend the ferry id take it more then the bridge then i could. if you come here its the Quebec vehicles you must watch out for. and basin head is a trick, kinda like a trap for tourists to detour them off the nice beaches lol we also have the biggest windmills in north america, as well an extremely diverse agricultural sector which is spear headed in potato production but we grow many other crops as well. then in eastren pei alone i dont know so much about the rest of the island there are cottage owners such as kelly ripa and mell gibson.
New brunswickers drive to get places and slow moving RV drive us nuts. You will notice in NB Nova scotians and Islanders drive like bats out of trying to get home from anlong drive like Toronto or something. NB is like a giant drive thru sometimes...
From not finding any NB videos I imagine you passed through as well. You should revisit and actually not like the island we embrace winter here with skidoo cross country skiing hockey etc. Summer we got the warmest beaches and lots of trees...lol but lots of little hidden gems. By the way we don't mesure in i ch or feet like the states but in centimeters. The island has less snow but gets really windy in winter you want feet of snow go to northern new brunswick where every snowfall is 30 centimeters or in american, 12 inch. We calculate distance in time not miles or kilometers and in Atlantic Canada if a pedestrian sticks out there arm, you STOP ✋ in PEI they just cross so be careful. Prince edward island is a tourist trap, go after labor day and save half your money...

Cute kids! Pretty wife! I've never been to PEI but a friend lives there, She's into the PEI music scene; it's pretty lively! I live close to Canada & LOVE Toronto! Although yes it is expensive, even with the great monetary exchange. So I do not go nearly as often as I'd like.

If you go to Charlottetown PEI you should go to the delta hotel
Walter I love your videos but the one thing you forgot and big reason why people goes to PEI is the golf courses it has the most golf courses in all of Canada.

The bridge would be a fun highlight of the road trip for me. Snow ? Bring snow boots and layer up, it’s way up north and to be expected in the winter months....Lol... who are the hates for anyway? If someone is looking to vacation in PEI, I would think that they would do some research beforehand and therefore be aware of these minor details. Driving? Well, I’m from Boston, so I expect bad drivers anywhere that has a high amount of tourists. Common sense people!

Regarding the scary crossing...you must have been in a van, Wolter I have quite the opposite complaint, namely that with those ugly concrete sidings block any view of the water. I find it opposite to frightening, a tedious 10 miles of nothig to look at. Now, I have driven it in a van and it's better. I'm not someone who likes heights, but there really isn't, at least to my mind any real sense of being up high. Compare it to crossing on an open sided bridge such as the Lion's gate in Vancouver.
Beautiful place to visit. Not the best place to live. You are treated differently if you “came from away”. Also not a lot of activities in the winter. Very much a summer place. But for a vacation is a nice place. Lovely beaches.
"Not the best place to live" Yup, a real shock to the system to move from BC only to discover that you will always be an outsider if you weren't born here. In relation to BC, it's pretty sterile here in almost every sense of the word. No wilderness, no wildlife, expensive to shop with little variety to choose from, wall-to-wall people. A really disappointing experience after listening to the PEI glee club braying continuously before we arrived. I doubt we'll return we we move.

What are you talking about???? The bridge IS the best part about going to PEI ;). Lol!!! I loved that province and would go back to visit anytime. We just spent the day because we were staying in Bouctouche NB but now i want to go back and spend a couple of days:D. Thanks for the wonderful advice!
We loved it in PEI. Though... The initial drive in the bridge or the $50 to exit via the bridge. Ouch :)

Per car but if you use the shuttle its 4.50 per person it's at the information centre in the little tourist shop area
