    Agree, 5DIII is the one you don't want to let off your hands. Probably the most comfortable camera I've ever used (1DX might be slightly sweeter, but its big and heavy, so not always reasonable). I brought it for a review only and loved so much that I sold my 5DII and bought myself Mark III instead (for special colours I saved my 5D Classic). It also accepts Magic Lantern (actually it's the top camera of all available with ML) which brings focus peak, trap focus, zebras and tons of other features. My complain is that in minimum shutter (P\AV mode) it only goes up to 1\250. I miss the shorter values for shooting action. About ISO... I posted some pictures at 25600 on Instagram and not a single viewer said a word about their quality.

      @PaulKretz Pƙed rokem +2

      @@leonmullingscreative You can't set automatic minimum shutter speed shorter than 1/250 in Av mode (can longer - 1\125, 1\60 etc.). If you want to set shorter (1\500, 1\1000 etc.) you have to go M or Tv mode... More recent DSLRs (e.g. 80D, 6DII and many more) let you set minimum shutter speed in Av all the way from max to min available in whole steps.

      I Agree I love My Mark III it's a work horse, I love the feel and the way the colors looks. One think you have to is get the exposure right and the colors pops. Doesn't do well when you blow the high lights. Mark III with the Canon 70-200 II lens no Joke. Even the budget 50mm 1.8 off the change

    Last few years I have been shooting surfing photography. My main body is a 5D MK IV with the 300mm f2.8 L II, and around my other shoulder is my trusted 5D MK III with the 70-200 f2.8 L which I use for headshots and those beach photos of the surfers entering/exiting the surf.
    Yeah, the autofocus with tracking on the IV is much better, especially in low light such as at dawn. But, when the subject is at a walking pace, the III is perfect in low light.
    Why have I not gone to the R series? - battery life and awesome quality second-hand low shutter count bodies of both the III and IV are available. I picked up another Mk IV a month ago for $AU1200 with only 7k shutter count, as it was sitting in a studio as a standby camera.

    Your reviews show how absolutely ridiculously good your photos are. It doesn't matter what camera and how old it is. Ok, with the new models, the way to a photo is certainly sometimes easier - keyword eye autofocus. But the results speak absolutely for themselves. Through your inspiration, I recently bought a Canon 1DX for around 670 euros and I love it and the images I get with it.

      @@lerx1980 The camera shows the focus point like other cameras I have. I don't trust any of them, even with the 1DX I check the images. What I can say is that I have never had as many accurately focused images in Servo Autofocus as I did with the 1DX. It really is a different world. So far I only had cameras in the 6d class, Eos RP, Panasonic G81, Canon 5ds. For the price I paid there is nothing better I have found. Of course an Eos R6 is better but at a much higher price point, so the 1DX does it for me.

    Canon had long been criticized for their “soft” images, so I think this is what made them change things up on the 5D3? Focusing and other things were improved over previous models, however, some issues were there with low light and processing, as you alluded to. There were many reports of a ‘Magenta cast’ to the skin tones, and I noticed this. I did not like the way the 5D3 handled red colors, and I got rid of the one I had.
    Really good point you brought up, that a lot of people have misconceptions of, and that is there are some things that are “baked in’ on files, even in RAW. And, even if one shoots RAW & JPEG, if you choose a color profile, it can and does effect the RAW files to a certain extent. Best way is to just shoot and learn what each Camera model can do, and go from there.
    I own and use, a 5D4, and Canon did “fix’ a lot of things. LIve View focusing that works, great colors and skin tones, reliable focusing, and decent video, but that camera could have been so much more. There was no excuse for not having the SD card slot be UHS-II capable. Heck, my old XT-1 Fuji has a UHS-II card slot! Battery grip that should have been designed to use a larger battery ala what Nikon bodies do.
    Some 5D4’s were known for being battery hungry, and mine is one of them. It “eats” the lousy LP-E6N batteries for lunch! And yes, those batteries are lousy. I hear people speak well of those batteries, but I am not one of them. I’ve had far better luck out of the EN-EL15 batteries I use in my Nikon bodies.
    The 5Ds Series offered in camera crop mode, and the 5D4 should have done so as well. I realize the 5ds were 50 megapixels, but if Canon had made the 5D4 be 32-36 megapixels, it would have been a huge hit. So many possibilities. YES, I have a LOVE/HATE relationship with my 5D4. I will not part with it as I used it for my Son’s Wedding, and did not use flash out of respect for the “paid Pros” there. I took a lot of ISO 12800 photos, due to the light limits of my 24-70 F4.0 L lens. The PROS all had 5D3’s with a GoDox flash unit, and did great work. My Son & Daughter admitted to me they liked mine as much or better. I think they were being nice. 😆
    I do not consider myself much of a Videographer, but I must say that the choice of Codec Canon did for the 4K video on the 5D4, was ridiculous. It looks good, but eats up the memory cards. Plan on using at least a 128GB Compact Flash card! I’m not even going to get into the stupid crop effect for 4K. I do think the 1080p out of my ole’ 70D, looks better than on the 5d4 1080p?
    Stay safe and Happy Shooting!

    I recently bought a 5D2 after seeing Martin’s videos. A near mint, 5k shutter example with warranty for £299 - AMAZING bargain! I had intended to buy a 5D Classic next, but when I saw amazing prices on mark 3 bodies online, I grabbed a Mk.3 instead. Glad I did: I am absolutely loving everything about it (not least the colours SOOC.) For my tastes the mark 2 colour is a little overwhelming, whereas the mark 3 colour seems more subtle. It’s all personal preference I suppose. My God though - really good used 5D3 bodies at £450 (when these cheaply-built little mirrorless things with their horrid EVFs cost £Thousands.) The 5D Mark III is one of the few FF Canons I’ve never felt I needed. I went from the 5D Mark II to the 6D and then 6D Mark II. Both had their pros and cons, but for me as an amateur they where enough. That was before my weakness for the 1D-series started to show itself

    I would put the 5D Mk.III in the same generation as the 1DX, which I own. Many things seem to be similar to what you describe. The programmable buttons, a bit better ergonomics, better low light capability and probably better or at least more advanced autofocus. The 1DX has a so complex AF system that I feel intimidated by it sometimes. It’s another reason for me liking the older cameras better. From the analog Eos 3 up to the 1D Mark IV the autofocus system was almost identical.
    I do feel that the files of the 1DX comes out a bit soulless. As you say about the 5D Mk.III, maybe too sharp.
    Of the three first generations of Canon pro sensors, I would say that the 5D Mk III / 1DX are a bit more boring than the earlier ones. I can understand why pro photographers feel a need to upgrade their system, but for amateurs like myself, the first generation, 5D / 1Ds Mk.I and Mk.II are producing nicer pictures straight out of the camera. The second generation, 5D Mk II / 1Ds Mk III are great as well, but I do believe that the earlier ones will be remembered longer because of the character of the photos. They make a dilettante like me feel pleased with the results. Great video as usual!

      @@MartinCastein I believe that they where aware of it, but if I remember correctly, the third generation came about in the middle of the “DxO-wars”. A lot of people where completely fixated on DxO scores, high resolution and dynamic range. Canon had to try for higher performance in synthetic test or they would have lost too much to Sony and Nikon. In my honest opinion a lot of the high performers on that list looked quite boring. Clinical and soulless.

    Thx Martin for your honest review on the mark iii.
    We've spoke in the past when I was getting the old tartan banding in the shadows from my 5D. It does look aweful and there was no way I could (ltd experience) recover those files.
    I seen that as a positive experience as I quickly realised where the 5D would come apart.
    The 6D never suffered from it (again in my ltd experience) it's odd how it skipped a generation only to return again!

      @MartinCastein  Pƙed rokem +1

      Hi Chris, yes I know who you are haha dont worry, the banding is forgivable on the 5d classic but for me on the mark iii it was just ridiculous at that stage when i was upgrading from the mark ii and then the mark iii was back to that banding again. I remember getting the mk iii when it came out and i was like "not this again..." Although you get it on the mark ii as well it wasnt quite as bad as that. 6d stomps all over that.

    Great video. Would say ISO 6400 was my top limit for files from this camera - after that noise and colours go off the rails a bit.
    Agreed on the sharpening, which seems extreme. I remove default sharpening on import now. Also strongly agree about using the cross types only, which is a must, really improves AI performance to keep things workable.
    Can see what you mean about 5D III colours too. Had a 6D and it had much better colours straight out of camera. Made portrait work a lot easier. Shame the AF system was so basic - if you are a manual vintage lens user, I think the 6D is a better option because of the colours. And so cheap now - can't believe I paid nearly 2 grand for mine new, sans lens they are 350 now for body only. Reminds me of the thing that I miss most from the 5D III - WiFi!
    Comparing this against later Nikon's isn’t fair - the D750 came out two years later and improves on the Canon in every way except handling and colour science. The D800 is a fairer comparison - for an extra 100 quid used you get enough resolution to make it worth looking at. I would hold on and put an extra 100 on top of that for a D810 though - that one was a real Canon killer for me. AF was perfect, dynamic range staggering (in comparison to 5D III), general tweaks and AA filter removal made it a more compelling option. Here you are getting into D750 price territory, so you have to look at how you would be using the camera - D750 is better for everyday work/weddings, D810 is a studio monster.
    Thank you for taking the time to make this video, lots of useful points for new 5d III users.

    I totally agree with you that the 5D and the 5D Mark ii 6d had better colors “naturally”. The 5D Markiii is the last of the canon cameras to have true canon colors. And it does have something unique about it that the other canons don’t have as well. Presets!! If you like to shoot with film emulation presets or any kind of preset for that matter like Masten labs etc. the 5d markiii is by far the best!!! No question the others cannot do as well. I have seen people make the markiii look exactly like the contax 645 to the point you would not be able to distinguish. So If you’d like to shoot a real film and you want to shoot digital hybrid with it this is your camera. Also when shooting after golden hour the markiii has this amazing brown skin tone that shows up. It’s just amazing. Another thing it shoots natural light and flash Equally amazing wish I cannot say for every camera before it. The markii is amazing and natural light but not as good as the Mark iii with OCF. but it’s also amazing. These are prob the best three four cameras ever made in terms of color to be honest. Markiv colors are not good. And it’s way more digital looking.

Some like the 5D Mark iii were great at both. Nikon doesn’t have a camera in my opinion on the level of the 5dii or 6d that’s almost magical. Even the D700 D3s which is great isn’t as unique. However they have many bodies that are great at both natural and OCF d700 D750 D3 D5 d810. With the exception in my opinion the D800e very close to that canon color with a Nikon twist. I was going to sell it but I cant part with it along with my 135L. For Environmental portraits its the one camera I can trust to get the colours right. While the Fuji is excellent the files are a tad too sharp and the Fuji skin tones not as good as canon. I'm unsure what I'm seeing in the latest generation of canon mirrorless full frame cameras but the files look too clinical/digital too me. It was one of the reasons I kept the 5DIII

    Owner of 2 5D MK3's with 7 pro lenses - Canon must hate, they over engineered this beast of a camera. Easy to use, reliable, damn near drop resistant, shutter counts reported at 500,000. Canon tries to stop you upgrading firmware to Magic Lantern with their last update. I've done nightclub shoots, low light, 24-70 red ring workhorse lens, I'll except a challenge on your 'R' bodies. Your going to lose. Canon does not like that? Current price about ÂŁ500 for body against an RF at 5K, need new lenses.

    Hi, canon 5d mark iii vs Nikon d610, which is better for wedding photography, and auto focus

    • @MartinCastein
      @MartinCastein  Pƙed měsĂcem

      thats a good questions and a bit harder to answer. The d600 wins on dynamic range by miles and miles, better buffer as well, the buffer on the 5d mark iii is really tiny like 9 or 11 shots or something and when the bride is coming down the aisle you can fill it really fast. If you are careful with it though you can get away with it. Overall though in other respects the 5d iii is the better wedding camera. However its more complicated than that because you have to take lens linup into account. While the 2.8 zooms are basically the same, the primes are not. Nikon is better at the 1.8 primes and canon is better at the 1.4/1,2 range generally other than at 50mm. If you want to shoot say 35 or 28mm 1.8 on one camera and 85mm 1.8 on another then nikon is better. If you shoot in a lot of really bright conditions with harsh light then nikon is better and for all else canon is better but overall i prefer the d600 but i expect most people would prefer the canon. The ergonomics on the canon are better.

    For my experience, i love color rendering of my 5D more than the others. But is not just the color science. It’s about the feeling in the hand, the low level time process.
    When i discovered my 1DX, 5D3, the color was not natural. I wanted to sell them. But i shoot more pictures and now i love it.
    The color is so different. But for me it’s a modern analog cold camera. Maybe more neutral. I dont really know. But i love it specialy in high ISO. I like the film look.
    For the sharpeness, i apply negative setting on my raw, but now i just use high iso (12800) and use grain.
    I can have film look but not the creamy look i have with 5D1, 5D2 😊
