i always love seeing multitools and knives-this video has nice, close shots which will help a lot of folks figure out if they want them, too. i've had a few civivis with smooth action issues as well, its possible that you could also get in there and bend the lock bar a tiny bit back if you service the qsp penguin (looks like a liner lock with a tight detent).

Great video. Just have an observation on the knife. I think the cut out near the thumb studs is a little deeper on the opposite side to the stud you used. Maybe it’s to access the liner lock easier. That might also make it easier to open in the right hand. Although if you are left handed I guess that won’t help. Keep up the great content.

    • @joshfenn

I went from the Gerber dime to the SOG Powerpint because I wanted a little stronger tool. I love it! I pocket carry it in a leather holder that also holds my pen and sometimes a flashlight. I just freed up pocket space by adding the RoyVon A3 to my keychain.
Also, I’m glad it’s not just me that didn’t like the Penguin’s action. I thought it was just me. It was hit or miss on even locking so I returned it. I love my mini Praxis and Sencut Sachse. Hard to beat them!

I always appreciate the depth of these reviews , a lot while not getting too much into the weeds , also love the SOG multi tool , not much of a multi tool person but that ability to use bits is very cool and also love the dual design of the Lochby case ! Good video as usual! I appreciate hearing about EDC items at this price point. I have several of the Lochby products and I find them very well made. Omg you didn't put a Civivi paraxis or a paraxis mini on this list at 40 and 30 respectively. Opps spoke to soon lol! Yes the paracis mini at 30 is crazy good.
Another one that should have been on the list is the Sanrenmu P801 at 30 bucks or a SRM/Sanrenmu 9201 in g10 and d2 for 30 or FRN and 8cr for 22 and these things have a axis like lock and run on PB washers and they are butter smooth and rock solid lock up with zero blade play and still fall shut.
Also sad you didn't put a Byrd harrier 2 or Meadowlark 2 in this list they can be had now for about 25 bucks and they are absolutely unbeatable at that price. Fantastic geometry on the normal blade and the geometry on the wharny versions are insane! They are in 8cr but it's decently done and with the geometry they have from the grind and distal taper the knives will cut and cut even when the edge has started to go dull the geometry will keep it cutting. They have rock solid lock up with the mid back lock, the actions are very smooth and the blade will drop when pushing the lock release so it's easy to close one handed.
The Penguin is a value at 28-36 bucks depending on the scale material. I've had like 8 of them and everyone of them break in and have a beautiful Washer action.. super smooth and free feeling with little to no blade play. The times I've handled a customers knife sent in for a sharpening and they have had action issues every single time it's been one of two things either the Teflon washer isn't there in between the PB washer and the blades washer running surface or one or both of the Teflon washers is bunch up amd torn and causing binding. Most times I've seen it it's been the Teflon washers being bunched up because it's torn and only one or two times because the Teflon washer(s) was missing. Those little thin Teflon washers are incredibly important in the Penguin if you want to have the buttery smooth action that they are known for.
Another absolutely banging knife for the money is the CJRB Pyrite the FRN and RPM9 spray formed steel go for 29.99 and they are unbelievable good for that and the g10 or micarta ones are typically around 45. The Pyrite Alt is the best one in my opinion as it's the modified wharny blade style. Super thin blade stock and comes down to around 14thou behind the edge so it's an absolute laser beam of a slicer and CJRB has their button lock action dialed in crazy good. The CJRB Hectare is a damn good full size 50 dollar edc knife as is the CJRB Prado (I call it the 45 dollar bugout killer, it's really a damn good model) the Prado comes down to around 12-13thou behind the edge so it's a laser beam as well because of a 3mm spine and a nice tall full flat grind taper off to pretty dang thin behind the edge.
Ahhh crap another one I just thought about that's a total banger and what I consider the single best 40 and under knife you can buy. The Kubey Nova, it's a full size knife, well done D2 (kubey consistently puts out d2 that's got a good heat treat and running it at a proper hardness. Most I've tested at in the mid 61s and you will see a 62hrc one every now and again) and the design overall is just crazy good and makes for a fantastic full size edc. Great blade shape and damn good geometry (around 11thou behind the edge) they are normally 40 bucks but you can get them on White mountain knives when they have the 25% of kubeys (they have it all the tjme) and stack a 10% off yoytubers cost takes it 40 to 27 dollars and free shipping and no tax if you live outside the state they are in. The kubey Drake is also another banger that is 40 dollars but can be gotten for 27 as well. It's crazy how well those knives are done to think that it can be sold at 27 shipped and still make money. They are every bit as well done as any 50-75 dollar kizer or civivi and the D2 kubey puts out is pretty much the best coming out of china in the budget knife realm. I have cut tested a bunch of kubey d2 models and they consistently finish above all the other large china companies doing d2 knives. They out cut your average QSP, Sencut, Civivi etc etc by about 20% (test is from hair whittling starting edge cutting card board until it will no longer clean slice a sheet of magazine paper across the grain) and on the sharpening stones Kubey done D2 is always a pleasure to sharpen! No sticky gummy foil burrs from to much retained austenite so the heat treat is solid as is the HRC at mid 61s typically. Sharpening can tell you a whole lot about the quality of heat treat a blade has. Well done heat treats sharpen so nicely and respond so well to the abrasives... overall I think kubey Is doing the best knives in the 30-50 normal cost range and they are absolutely killing it with the premium stuff in full Ti and S90v for like 150 bucks or fill titanium and 14c28n for 100 bucks... just think about how great a deal that is, a full Titanium frame lock and well done 14c28n for 100 bucks and they can be had when WMK runs the sells for 65 dollars shipped!!! Excellent action, rock solid build and butter smooth. I won't but premium steel knives from any china manufacturer EXCEPT Kubry, I have their s90v, s30v, m390, Aus10, D2 and multiple pieces from them in each of those steels and every piece has been very well done in heat treat quality and the HRC will be in the upper end of the recommend range and not at the lower end of the recommended range like pretty much every other china knife company does. Out of the 3 s90v knives I've had Rockwell tested they was all in the mid 60.x and on the s30v 2 knives from them tested and they was both low 60.x and on the M390 3 knives tested in it and they was all in the high 60.x... the d2 in the mid 61.x, aus10 was in the high 60.x and the 14c that I've had 7 knives in it from them tested and they are ranged between 59.7 and 61. I don't buy many budget knives anymore because they give me no enjoyment anymore but I still buy kubey budget models from time to time and I literally have a rule that I will not buy any premium powder steel knives for any china company but kubey is the one exception to that rule I have no problem buying premium steels from them because I know it will be good. I'm someone that's in the performance of the knife as a cutting tool. I don't fidget with knives so that doesn't matter to much so long as the knife is smooth on the open and close with no tight spots and most importantly no blade play and kubey knocks it out the part in those areas and that's about 20% of the knife to me, the other 80% is in how well the steel is done and how nice of a sharpening experience will it be. If they got the heat treat done great and the blade shape and geometry is good and the steel is run at the upper range of the recommended hrc I can over look every thing else even ergonomics. Kubey is Definitely doing crazy good work for crazy great prices and wjth excellent customer service (I've broken a couple pocket clips on their knives, like 2 or 3 spring clips and 2 ti milled clips and didn't ever charge me a dime) they are always friendly and ready to help with just a email or inst@ PM.. got a Ti and s90v Drake like 2 years ago and when it got to me one of the threaded posts that sit in the ti back spacers was stripped. I emailed them and simply asked for a replaced me threaded rod/standoff and they said no problem. About a week later I open my main box and there is a package from them that was like a 9x3X2 inch and I was like why would they send this big a box for a tiny threaded tube.. opened the box and there was 4 of the threaded rods and 2 full sets of hardware and a brand new titanium and s90v Drake with a note to just keep the other and here's the replacement threaded rods...
I don't praise any china company (except Kubey) but when they do a good job they do a good job and kubey is not only doing a good job they are doing a great job so they are gonna get praise so long as they are doing such great work and changing the very fair prices.

"This is the company brand 2L sling bag!" No, that is Dwayne the Rock Johnson's favorite mid 90's accessory.
I have a motorcycle thigh pouch that I hang from my belt instead using duty clips. It looks more like a carpenters pouch, but for all intents and purposes is in fact... A fanny pack.

    • @TheOldSchoolCrisis
      @TheOldSchoolCrisis Před 11 dny

@@joshfenn It has no bearing on me or my life. I am not bothered by people wearing these things, I just hate when people try to relabel them in an attempt to protect their masculinity. In my eyes anyone wearing a fanny pack strapped to their chest screams one of two things to me.
      A) You are trying to hard to avoid the stigma of a fanny pack, so you have opted for a less practical method of wearing it.
      B) You are concealed carrying and think that this is somehow discrete. (It is not.)
If you like wearing the fanny pack then you should go for it! I am in my 30s and married. I have not cared about being fashionable in almost a decade. As I said earlier I too wear a fanny pack of sorts. But, don't call it a sling when we all know what it actually is.
I have a sling pack that I carry for work every day (5.11's LV10 Med Sling). I work in IT and this bag has a ton of elastic straps on the inside that make it fantastic for carrying around cables. The difference is it is an ACTUAL sling bag, designed ergonomically to be worn as a back pack that can be swung around to the front for easy access. They also sell a Fanny Pack in the same series of bags (The LV6). It is in fact labeled as such, a fanny pack.
Ultimately my issue isn't with anyone wearing a useful bag. I do think it is a bit silly to opt for an objectively worse position, but again you do you. But let's be real here. It is a fanny pack, and calling it anything else is being dishonest with YOURSELF.
