    They literally had the perfect implementation of how to activate a sage ability in BotW. They could’ve made it so can could hold shield to activate Sidon, pressing A while drawing a bow for riju, pressing A while gliding for tulin, and pressing A while crouching for yunobo.

      thing is, these are cool and all, but sidon's waterwall would be broken if it was mapped like the other sages. free shield that protects from ALL damage, hot weather, also giving a big wave slash attack, with only a 10 second cooldown

  • @thajocoth
    @thajocoth Před 11 měsíci +95

    1:08 - Sidon's ability actually rivals Tulins for usefulness, but they don't make it super clear in the game all the things it can do. They only directly highlight the shielding and short range water projectile, which are the least useful parts of the ability.
    Riju is the least useful, as her radius grows too slowly, and you can replicate it faster by using Sidon's ability and attaching a lemon to an arrow. As a bonus, it'll effect every lemon you fire for a full two minutes instead of just one electric blast per ability use.
    That's because Sidon's ability makes you count as being *wet* for two full minutes whenever you use it. This makes all your projectiles wet, and wet Shock Fruits hit an area instead of a single spot (which is why Shock Fruits are so great for fishing, but with Sidon's help they're also good for hunting groups of lizards & hitting groups of enemies). This also prevents bomb flowers from exploding in your hands near magma, and Link from overheating while in the desert during the day or near magma, so you can completely replace all your heat protection gear and heat protection food with Sidon (as long as you activate him every two minutes in hot areas).
    This has a side effect of making Zora weapons far more powerful as well, since they attack like they're wet for that same two minutes and they deal double damage when wet.

      I was legit about to type a whole paragraph on why Sidon'snSage Ability has been my favorite all game, but you saved me a ton of effort. Thank you sir ☆
      The only thing I'd add is that I actually like to use the water projectile for "mining". While you have the shield on, equip and 2-handed blunt weapon and hold R to aim. When you release, Link will actually launch the water projectile wherever you were aiming (instead of throwing the weapon). I do this a lot to collect minerals lol.

      I think it's 1 tulin, 2 yunobo(for breaking rocks) close 3rd for sidon, & last for riju, also i like how you call shock fruits lemons ive never heard that before🙂

    • @thajocoth
      @thajocoth Před 11 měsíci +3

      @@ElliotHorner I'd put Sidon in the number 1 slot because of his very high versatility, but Tulin & Yunobo are definitely the other two useful sages, for gliding, rock breaking, and attacking from vehicles. All three of them are super useful. It is all up to one's playstyle and personal preferences though...
      As for the lemons... The produce in Hyrule all has analogs in our world, like Hydromelons being Watermelons and Voltfruit being Dragonfruit. Looking at the Shock Fruit, they're just clearly Lemons... Which was a sensible choice on their part since citrus fruits can be used as batteries.

    The champion abilities in BOTW were so intuitive to use, so it surprises me that Nintendo made the Sage abilities so much more difficult to engage with (though I do adore having my own posse backing me up so I keep them all out lol).
    Also, 100% agree with you on the copy-and-paste cutscenes. I hate that the original sages are nameless faceless characters who all give the same pointless exposition. They should've elaborated on different parts of the war as you suggested. For instance, the Gerdudo sage could've explained Ganondorf's motivations or why she didn't join him on his conquest. Would've made for a much more interesting story.

    • @StormsparkPegasus
      @StormsparkPegasus Před 11 měsíci +6

      I love when the sages run away from you when you're trying to use their abilities too (sarcasm). The way it is now, would be ok if that's how it worked when the actual sages were following you during the questline. But once you finish the templates and gain their abilities permanently, it absolutely needed to work like BOTW.

    • @fashnek
      @fashnek Před 11 měsíci

      BOTW's champion abilities were absolutely obnoxious. Just like Master Sword's durability -- finite uses that never ever recharge and a long cooldown. If you actually want to prepare to use them in full, you have to deliberately burn them to zero (which might involve finding somewhere to take damage...) and then sit around waiting, and if you accidentally use one, repeat the process. A completely optimized energy killer, ripping the game's pace to a halt.

    • @maryam.m
      @maryam.m Před 9 měsíci

      @@fashnek I meant the way that they were integrated into other gameplay actions made them more intuitive (e.g. Spin Attack --> Urbosa's Fury). The only one that remotely carried this idea over was Tulin's Gust activating while you are in flight. Yunobo does it to an extent, but he adds weight to Zonite devices so I almost always disable him while I'm trying to navigate somewhere, or spam his launch so he doesn't upset my trajectory.
      As for the longer cool down, the Champion Abilities were so broken that I didn't mind the fact that there were finite uses. I never felt that it hindered my gameplay in any way if they weren't available (e.g. if Mipha's Grace was inactive, just use fairies), save for maybe wanting Revali's Gale a little more often. A quick trip to Hyrule Castle would also speed up the time it took to recharge, and there were plenty of things to loot while waiting around.

I normally wasn't near a cooking pot when the blood moon started happening, but I could always throw out a few portables and get some extra duration attack meals, or a couple extra hearts on gloom healing meals. Very useful in my opinion. Those sages can burn though. My biggest beef of the game was having to change armor sets all the time though. THEY SHOULD NOT GIVE THE KOROK SEEDS A GOOD REWARD
    if they make a really good reward, like, for example a hookshot, than you would have to spend so much time on every single file just to get it because you want it. If the reward is shit, than you don't feel like your missing out for not getting them.

    Pro tip: Sidon's water shield can temporarily shield you from hot temperatures as an alternative to clothing items or meals. It was the only way I survived my first entrance into Gerudo Desert in my most recent playthrough. So he's not useless after all!
    I've used portable cooking pots multiple times right before multiple boss battles too, since I always underprepare and I don't want to leave the dungeon to make a bunch of meals at a stable. Those meals saved my bacon when I struggled in those fights, so... yeah, I really like portable cooking pots. I think they're really neat and convenient.

    They should've handled the sage abilities like they did in BotW with the champions. Here's my proposal. Tulin activates when you hold down the jump button like Revali's gale. Sidon activates when you hold up a shield for a few seconds. Yunobo activates on a first-stage charge attack and Riju activates when you hold down an arrow for a few seconds. None of this walking up to them and pressing A or accidentally activating them when you just want to pick up dropped items.

    I do get all your points, but this is what I have to say in return:
    I always believed that you were never able to have a full amount of hearts so that when you eat meals that give you the extra green hearts, it still means something. Another reason is for the Demon Statue who swaps a stamina for a heart or vice versa. For example, if you discovered this statue super late in the game (which is probably super rare I know lol) with all of your hearts and stamina maxed out, it would mean nothing. Though yes, it can definitely get aesthetically annoying haha.
    Honestly I forgot about portable cooking pots haha. The only time I found myself using one was in a little space between where you fight Ganondorf's army, and then Ganondorf himself. It allowed me to cook some sundelion meals, because I hadn't cooked any before, and realized they were kind of required after a few attempts lol.
    Koroks. Mixed feelings with these lol. I think koroks are more about the journey trying find them, and exploring this massive world. I personally really enjoyed finding them in botw, and discovering secret little places in the map that I never would have found otherwise. I did also feel really satisfied seeing that %100.00 in the bottom corner. But yes, they probably should have changed the collectable item to be something different for a different game.

    Yunobo and riju launch the ores everywhere but!
    If you use sidons ability with any weapon that has a damage over 30 (spears have to be 40, 2-handed can be 25) then the water projectile becomes a ranged, aimable, piecing ore destroyer capable of taking out 4-6 ores in one use.

    The memories and korok seeds were worse in this imo because in the first game the point was it would push you to explore. You didn't know exactly where the memories were and needed to pay attention to landmarks and notice them when you were in the right area. Similarly, the korok seeds pushed you off the beaten path and gave you direction when you were just wandering around trying to decide what to do next. The memories here were not only all mapped out, but were hard to miss since they're giant landmarks. And the korok seeds felt redundant in a game with a lot less empty space to roam. You're instead encouraged to build vehicles and shoot into the sky to traverse long stretches, and a solid chunk of the koroks are the escort missions which were less "ooh a thing to quick do before I keep moving" and more "oh I thing I have to stop and think about and put time into solving that might lead me in a completely different direction than where I was heading"

  • @docAvid314
    @docAvid314 Před 7 měsíci

    OK, I agree, sort of, that the UI for calling for Sage abilities could be easier. After all, it would actually be more realistic if you could call specific sages, regardless of where they are, rather than just tagging whoever is in front of you. Pressing (whatever control sequence) could represent yelling "hey Riju, let's make sparks!", "hey Yunobo, let's go for a tumble!", "hey Sidon, make me wet!", "hey Tulin, please blow this thing for me!", or (spoiler warning) "hey Mineru, let me ride you!". Sure, makes sense. I do think there's a kind of fun chaotic aspect to the way it works, and an emersive, spatial sense to it, but I definitely can see the argument it might be better another way.
    But I also think it's really fantastic having the sages there with you, in person (sort of), fighting with you, and directly supporting you with their powers. Obviously, Nintendo could have done both, maybe they should have done both, but I'm very glad that they at least tried this, rather than just keeping it the way it was in Breath. I love the companion sages, and if, for some reason, the only way Nintendo was going to think of doing it was with the finicky controls, I think it's well worth it.

    I personally thought that it would be great to have certain sages appear when doing specific actions. For example, Tulin joining you while gliding.
    It would be great if Sidon would join you while you were swimming so you could have the choice of using him or the Zora armor to climb waterfalls (ofc that may make the Zora armor redundant but as someone who likes to collect armor sets & a Sidon simp, it's a win/win for me)/using him or building vehicles to cross bodies of water. Depends on how fast the players wants to go.
    Yunobo already joins the player when on a viable vehicle.
    I haven't really thought about what Riju would join Link in (other than shield surfing simply as a nod off to her role in BotW). A half-assed idea was to just have her appear every time Link whipped out a bow on the shield and smite whoever was unfortunate enough to get caught in the blast.

    I use the portable Pots when I need to make food on the fly, whether it's before a boss fight or I'm about to fight Gloom Hands in The Depths or the surface.
    I can say the Sage ability idea would be great, a couple or so of the Heart/Stamina containers are actually locked behind a couple quests like the Statue in the Depths under the Great Plateau where you bring it's eyes to it, like you're collecting Spirit Orbs.
    I can see how it's repetitive to us, but like any narrative, the Sages aren't all there to witness it, so each one needs their own scene. Not saying they had to do copy/paste, but I understand the repetition, WE have seen it, but not the individual Sages locked in their realms due to their duties or their own issues. I can see though maybe having a small fight scene or each having a moment with the King & Queen before the Imprisoning War, but the narrative makes sense at least.
    The memories were actually my favorite part of the game, going from place-to-place, piecing together what happened, it had more narrative and felt more fulfilling than BOTW's Memories. I cried when I found the last one because of the secret revealed(no I will not spoil it here, that's rude.)
    . . . I can agree that the Korok Seed collecting was... not good, just to get more inventory slots to boot. I rather farm materials and Rupees to do that -_-
    And I agree, I love Tulin, he and the Stormwind Ark were my favorite parts of the game, bar none.
    Honestly, I can't say anything bad about this game. The Memories made me really connect to the game, the characters and the tragic tale that BOTW could not do or hold for me, all of the characters were lovely, and the game & it's story was so heart-touching, so inspirational, that I, not only decided to redraw a character based around the Zonai, but make a complete backstory, with a story to her tale, for why she's a Zonai and the crazy adventure that she has with Link and her friends to find out her past and fix the present, even at the cost of herself.
    THAT right there shows how a game can impact someone, not only to impress, but to inspire to create. This game did just that, and I will always label it as my favorite Zelda game next to Twilight Princess.

    Tulin is by far the best of the Sages. His long range attacks are super useful for taking out annoying Keese and Chu-chus, plus his head shots are really helpful for knocking down foes about to attack me. Add all that to his ability which is always available in the moments that you need it and I'd say he's the only sage I'd ever really want to be active at any given time. Shame he has a mischievous side to him that causes him to blow away all the monster parts on the ground whenever I try to pick them up.

    I hadn't visited the Forgotten Temple yet, so I couldn't deduce the order. Because I wanted a nice streamlined telling of the story, I forced myself to wait until I had collected every memory so I could enjoy an uninterrupted and chronological story.
    What they should've done is have each tear unlock the next part of the story, so each player can experience the retelling in the proper order regardless of where they explore first.

    I agree 100 percent with this list, but, I do use portable pots a lot, like all the time. Whenever I'm in a rush and I need a Speed boosting meal or a quick attack boost and im out of pre-cooked meals, i just pop out a few portable pots really quick and make them right there.

    Another option on the sage problem: just hold the whistle button to bring up a menue just like weapons, bows, shields, and items, to select between actively summoned sages. This would be even eaaier to use since it would only be 5 options deep at most at any given time. To cancel an ability, simply select them again the same way. Whistling could still be done by tapping the button, with the menu requiring a one second hold or so.
    Tulin's wind gust should still happen just by pressing A while gliding, and Yunobo's cannonball should still happem automatically with vehicles.
    Also, Sidon's water wall should not be dispelled by firing the water wave. Instead, have a cool down between water waves as long as the bubble is active, and have a cool down between the bubble breaking and its next activation so that the player cant simply have it up all the time. As it is, being able to tank 1 free hit is on very little use if the player has no offensive capability in the mean time.

    The only time i ever used the portable cooking pots was to cook when a bloodmoon catches me offguard and i can cook better food

    I agree on most all of these except the memories. I loved them. Had no problem with them being done similar to how they were done in BotW. As for the cooking pots, I used them once and then only used them for building purposes

    Im gonna defend the portable cooking pots a bit. One of the tips the game gives you on loading screens is to mark cook pots on the map so you know where you can cook on the go. That eats sooooo many stickers! The portable pots fixes this issue, and saves you having to warp back to a town or find your nearest local pot (which might be thwarted by rain) to cook an impromptu meal. Ive used the portable pots quite a bit, myself

    The only real use I found for Cooking Pots was when I was earlier on in exploring the Depths when I didn't want to backtrack and head to a Lightroot just to recover gloom'd hearts.

    I mostly use the Sages to help me fight a tough enemy, like one of the bosses. And Yunobu’s is useful for clearing out caves, especially when I’m low on bombs. So I’d be okay with leaving the champions in, just as companions, without their “abilities”.

    My stamina is even, and you always want to have 2 extra spaces for hearts so you can eat yellow-heart giving meals, as then you get to have full hearts longer, which allows master sword beam.
