Evangelicals love the military then vote for Republicans who throw out LGBT service members, cut funding for programs that help veterans, call homeless veterans struggling with PTSD and addiction "bums" or throw them into prison for using medicinal marijuana and then yell at liberals for not supporting unjust wars. The English term "holiday" literally means "holy days," coined in the 1500s in regard to (hold on to your ever offendable hats!) CHRISTIANITY. *gasp* Yep, that's right. "Happy holidays" is every bit as Christian as "Merry Christmas." Nothing but uneducated, petty freaks on both sides of this meaningless debate. What a shock.

I'd like to thank you for pointing out the blatant use of a soldier's death as a plot point. The men and women who gave "last measure of devotion " would be turning in their graves, if they knew that their sacrifice was used as a miserable ploy for sympathy. I'm truly sickened by this. As a person whose job it was to return the fallen to their family; and for their use in this travesty, I'm appalled. I should have waited till tomorrow, instead of watching on Christmas day. There was also an illegal advertising campaign for this movie that took place. The campaign involved making robocalls disguised as surveys to promote the film.
Mike Huckabee, a former governor of Arkansas, took part in it by voicing the recorded message. As a result, the advertising company and this film's production company was sued for this stunt for violating telemarketing laws. They eventually lost the suit and had to pay around $32 million to every person who recieved their robocall. I'm guessing the money that was left unclaimed went to charity, but don't quote me on it. Point being, they were made an example of, and rightfully so.
So yeah, you can add "illegal and deceiving advertising" to the list of scumminess this movie managed to pull off. Merry Christmas, Sean!

It really annoys me that whenever a lot of people are painting the picture of our nation's founding, they jump right to the Pilgrims to say that we were founded on religious freedom and escaping from persecutions. Plymouth and the Pilgrims weren't the first successful English colony. Jamestown was, and they were not about religion in the slightest. Jamestown is only important these days to talk about Pocahontas, and it's really sad.

Watching things unfold from 4,000+ miles away, not much has changed, except the depth of their delusion that it's open season on Christians, just because some of us don't want to play their reindeer games. So they make this mirror of secular entertainment media where they can bitch and moan about their plight, using the same tactics they use to oppress others, because that's pretty much all they know. So the movie was released in 2012 and Christian (the grandson) is 14 in the movie's present day... okay, do the math. Assuming the beginning flashback actually takes place in 2003 (because the Iraq War began in 2003 and ended in 2011, almost a year before this movie came out), it's then reasonable to place the movie's present day in 2017. So then... this movie is taking place five years in the future... during Trump's first full year as president.
Of course, I might be reading too deeply into this, and the writers just failed at basic math... and recent American history.

One way for this movie to make a lot more sense:
It doesn't take place in 2012, but rather in a dystopian near future where Dr. Robotnik has launched an actual war on Christmas and begun literally outlawing Christmas piece by piece, and the Reveres are literal Freedom Fighters trying to save America and Christmas from the evil forces of a mad dictator, which means that the son probably died in the War on Terror sometime after 9/11.
I say this because everything (other than the weird legal hijinks) looks normal, but Bob and his family talk like they're huddling in Knothole hiding from Christmas-hating SWATbots and Badniks waiting for Sonic to help them.

You know the really sad thing about this movie? People watch this and then assume that all faith based films that revolve around persecution of Christians are this terrible...when in reality there are some fantastic movies about persecution of the faithful. Case in point; the 1966 film A Man for All Seasons. Yes, the story is about St. Thomas More and his struggles to keep his Catholic principles even as England falls under the Protestant Reformation...but it's well directed, well written, well acted and actually presents cases for both sides of the conflict using compelling characters with their own unique reasons for doing so. Over 50 years later and it still holds up remarkably well whereas this will no doubt fall to the dustbin.

For all I know, maybe that's what God is waiting for. One major thing that bothers me about modern Christianity is that it's actually extremely immature - even silly - in what it preaches vs what it acts like. I'm shocked & appalled that people calling themselves Christians would actually vote for a guy like Trump. I just can't reconcile that one. It's like they'd literally vote for the devil if he were running on the Republican ticket. I don't care for organized religion in general. I just want the human race to mature. tavi.

This movie is made to make people angry. Angry that their rights are supposedly taken away. And who wants to be angry during the holidays? Oh I am angry now, but not in the way the filmmakers want.
Contrary to their claims, recent faith-based movies (for the most part) are not about God, Christianity or spirituality. They're about politics. Horrible politics of people stuck in the past. That's also why these movies caters to Americans, and only Americans.

I like a little Bing Crosby myself, but some of the newer music is really stupid and painful to listen to.
Can't stand the smug, condescending tone of these kinds of movies. They like to come off as superior to everyone else while at the same time playing up their non-existent victimhood. You're not oppressed when you're the majority and your beliefs and holidays are heavily promoted and celebrated all over the damn world 😒
