  • Join me as I explore the Salt River in Arizona. I find a huge amount of sunglasses and other stuff. If I had more time, I would have been able to build "that wall" with sunglasses alone. I can't wait to go back.

    Here in Canada there is an group,called stream keepers who clean rivers to bring them back to good health. This river could sure use it.

      I've lived in Tucson since 69 which is just south of where this was shot. I was a swimmer and life guard but I cant imagine getting in water anywhere in Canada. I never feared drowning till I jumped into water that was cold. I locked up and the guy that could swim like a fish couldnt hardly move. Obviously I didnt drown but I learned dont jump in cold water. In Tucson the ice on the Rillito River dont melt until 100F.

    Chig...having grown up in Arizona my entire life, I have fished that river with my dad when I was just 12 or 13 years old, and tubed the Salt River dozens of times in my mid and late teens. I'm 54, now, so that gives you an idea how long ago that was! It's just heart breaking to see the condition of that river after all these years!!!

    All that trash just makes me sick and leaves me shaking my head in disgust. I volunteer here in Missouri on some "Clean Stream" events where we haul bags and bags of trash out of the beautiful ozark streams several times a year. People piss me off with all this inexcusable littering.

      Jay... as good as that sounds, it's a waste of everyone's time. You go out to correct the misdeeds of others only to have all the garbage return within months. The most valuable thing we all have on this earth is our time. Why let these jerks waste your valuable time cleaning up their garbage? They sure didn't bother to waste their time disposing of it correctly. Sounds harsh, but it's the undeniable truth.

      After several years at sea, the cans swim upstream to spawn in the very same place they were originally consumed .
      After expelling the final drops of their contents, these drops are fertilized by the sunglasses and the cycle is completed to begin again.

      Doug, I don't know where you live, but given the vast amount of cans and the cash in money that comes with them, even if you live outside of the US, I don't see this task as an impossibility for you. Even if you don't get a piece of equipment down there, with some muscle and the right kind of (custom?) scoop like the baskets with a handle on them they use for collecting sand fleas/aka soft shell crabs, except this one would be much larger so it would have a handle on each side. (There are vids on YT of people collecting, cooking and eating sand fleas)Two guys, one on each side grab a handle and start scooping. : ) May need to move a few branches out of the way, but Can Be Done. It would be a public service, not to mention much happier wild life. : ) If it's on your heart to do this, then Get 'Er Done. : )

      Frank, I get your point for sure. Though I think I should inform you that that Indian (Iron Eyes Cody) was fictional, not an Indian at all. I did a search to get the info correct. He was born Oscar DeCorti in 1904 in Louisiana to two Italian immigrants, later he moved to California, changed his name to Corti then to Cody. He died at ninety five years old.The fact they didn't employ a genuine American Indian to play that famous role really rubbed a lot of Indigenous people the wrong way when word got around. Sad thing is that Indian roles were never given to Indians at that time, unless you want to count Flaming Star about a half breed played by Elvis (who was supposedly part Indian).

I'm parked right next to him, pick up the plastic, knock on the glass, he rolls down the window and I said ' You dropped something.' and toss it in the back seat. Look at mom and say 'Really? This is what you taught him?' Drive off and they were still sitting there. I would have made my kid get out and clean the entire f'ing parking lot and then made him return his new toy/whatever and buy a tree to plant.

      Ken Carter the beads are from tubing season when everyone goes tubing in the summer. I live near there in mesa az and guys bring beads like they do at Marti gras and the women flash for them and the guys throw them beads. I've only been once but never again, I got fried to a crisp from the sun. A lot of people bring marshmallows and throw them at eachother too lol

    • @carolv8450

      When u dive under water u hold your breath. I think it has a valve that closes if water gets in. When u get to top, you blow water out of snorkel. But u only stay under for as long as u can hold your breath. U

    • @jodydorsett8726
      @jodydorsett8726 Před 7 lety +1

      That gurgling noise you hear sometimes is the snorkel tube filling with water. You blow it out whenypu surface.

    • @Roxorr
      @Roxorr Před 7 lety +2

      Carol V the snorkel with a valve is called a dry snorkel and sometimes people don't use them because they can get full of dirt and stay closed, then you won't be able to breath through it. So some people don't like them.

    I enjoyed your under water footage. It reminded me of when I was much younger and care free, spending my whole summers "down on the river" boating, fishing, & snorkeling. This was on the South Umpqua river north of Roseburg, Oregon where my folks owned a riverside property. Nothing fancy really, just a glorified shack but I loved my time there.
    Thanks for tickling my memory center!
    P.S. I forgot to mention, the location you were at almost reminded me of a garbage dump! What's up with folks there. Reminds me of the neighbors dog that keeps his own yard clean by sneaking over and shitting on yours! Visitors to that river must be those kind of neighbors!

      You are exactly correct, the real shame is that the people who carry a full case of beer or soda but after they finish that six pack it weighs virtually NOTHING yet they toss each can in order to make the whole serene beauty look like a garbage pit, the pure laziness is beyond belief, how hard would it really be to bring one or two large trash bags and when you leave ensure you fill up those trash bags and perhaps have a large depository near the parking areas and just dump the bags of aluminum cans for people who like to turn cans in for cash, then just leave the trash bags for the next people going in and before you know it the river would be free of litter but that would seem like to much work of course!

    Beau the best time to hunt the Salt river is starting in Oct-Nov when they turn off the Stewart Mountain Dam. The best spot for gold rings is the take out area to about a half mile back. Thousands of people tube each weekend from Memorial Day through Labor Day. The ratio is approximately 400+ pull tabs & bottle caps per gold ring. I run a CZ21 and ignore the low tones, thousands of bobby pins. The water is filthy and Arizonans are mostly slobs. If you pass through here in the winter DM me if you want to hit some ghost towns.
