No, pollinators won't be able to get to the blossoms. This idea is perfect for blueberry bushes, though, because by the time you need to net them, all the blossoms have been pollinated and are ripening into berries.

Tanya, thank you for sharing this video. The Dollar Tree waste basket is quite useful in covering the tops of ten inch containers to detear the notorious white butterflies that produce those voracious green caterpillars from eating up our leafy green vegetables. I will soon purchase those laundry bags for similar usage. The hoopla hoops, knitting, and clips will also come in handy. Thanks again for your Dollar Tree hacks. God bless you.

I live in Rhode Island and am looking forward to getting my planting going. I purchased 6 of the stacking planters from DT.......I want to plant lettuce//strawberries and tomatoes and some flowers and some other things too (have not decided what yet !!!). I am going to drill holes on the bottom of each pot and going to get that laundry bag to fit over the planters. Our squirrels have real attitudes. They will pick something ... look at you right in the eye .... take one bite and then fling whatever it is at you .... and go on the the next piece ..... so the laundry bag is a GREAT idea. I plan on YouTubing my planting adventure. Thank you for sharing ....

Great ideas. Love the wastebasket cloche. Squirrels are my nemesis. I have a neighbor who puts out huge bags of peanuts and they destroy my pots and gardens burying them. I use wood BBQ skewers….points up….around my plants….and I roll up the bird netting to make a collar around the rim of my pots. I do, however, get stabbed with the points frequently. Same neighbor puts cat food out for the skunks. They are a problem also. Then there’s the ground hog and bunnies. It’s a never ending battle.
Linda Vater recently soaked some little pieces of wood in mentholatum to keep squirrels out of her window boxes. Someone told her to put it on her decorative pumpkins last fall to keep the squirrels from eating them and it worked. She also uses pea gravel on top of the soil in her potted plants to keep them from digging.

Such brilliant ideas! I struggled last year as did most everyone with a below average tomato haul. PLUS I had thieves, sneaky, pesky squirrels. Watched a man in New Zealand or Australia show how he protected his mango crop. He makes individual "Bags" out of metal window screen. IT WORKED! I cut a square piece of screen about 12", then form molded it around a 28 ounce can of beans, tomato what ever. I just folded the excess and what I ended up with was a can shaped basket. One end is open and I slid that over my cluster of growing tomato. They were cherry sized at the time but because I chose a 28 ounce can instead of a 16 ounce can for my mold, there was adequate space for the tomatoes to enlarge and grow.
I bought that spool of garden wire from the Dollar and a Quarter store and wired tied the open end of my basket closed. The only thing leaving that basket is the tomato plant stalk.
IT WORKS! The squirrels still attempt to bite into it, but when they realize it is metal off that scadaddle and leave my food unhurt!
A generous roll of metal window screen (GET THE METAL) not the plastic ran me $8.98 2021. I made about 12 baskets and had plenty of wire left over.

I miss those too. I used them a lot. I happened to buy a bunch of them before my store stopped selling them and really don’t want to spend the extra money at another big box store. The last time I checked (probably last fall), they still had them on their website but you have to buy a case. It will probably be worth it if they still have them. The sun does ruin the fabric on the top after a while.

All that netting is a great idea! I have scrub jays and mockingbirds that love to hide peanuts. But I have found that the problem with netting, especially over flowers that needs to be pollinated (e.g., strawberries), is that pollinators cannot access the flowers 😞

You’re a genius making cloche with dollar tree trashcans!….omg and the Landry bag! I’m going to try that! Another tip for you: birds usually only want your fruit for the water content. Some gardeners have said that if you put a bird bath out near your garden, they won’t bother your fruit
