Those swimsuit issues sold millions and not many complained because it was a story by itself

Whoever stopped buying comics cause they did a swimsuit special is 100% lying 😂😂
Right? What a silly inclusion.
Seriously, I laughed my ass off when I saw Ghost Rider posing as just a flaming skeleton!
I saw this and bought copies 😅
Yeah coz that's the part I'm willing to read them 😜🤣.
That ghost rider pic gave me the smirk I needed today 😏,how can people not find the humor in that
I knew the minute I saw the title that One More Day would be on top.
Well, there's a good reason for that.
Just why? Why did that have to exist?
But I think any moment with SJW Carol should be there at #1
Agree
Crazy how that loose adaptation is the one of the best marvels movies (NWH)
I use to be a huge Avengers fan but seeing the team cover-up Scarlet Witch's crimes to avoid bad PR soured me. That's something I'd see on _The Boys,_ not Earth's Mightiest Heroes.
That swimsuit edition was hilarious 😂 nude ghost rider wasn't a thing I knew I needed
just look at those bones....
As a female comic book reader and and fan since the age of 12 and comic creator for over 20 years I can assure you that actual fans had no problem what so ever with the swimsuit editions. If anything, I wish there were more. They were a vibrant, cool glimpse into those characters.
1000% agree...injecting 2023 identity politics into 1990s sensibilities.
Totally agree, wondering what kind of “research” was performed by WM…
ABSOLUTELY... Besides,

Exactly. The inclusion of Punisher with his skull-kini and the nude Ghost Rider pointed out how much of a tongue-in-cheek affair it really was.
Yeah, usually we only see them spiral in tragedy, because writers and there fans demands there continuous unending drama.
The whole MJ/Paul storyline
should top the list
Indeed, that's just made as absurd and stupidly as possible, jeez, they don't even care about Spider-man anymore.
if it were in a different reality where their version of Peter died or in a different relationship, maybe. but in the 616 verse people want to see Parker and MJ together wouldn't want this. Doubt even Stan Lee would have as he liked them the best. They need to leave Parker alone.
@@danielwaugh2215 People are disrespecting Stans's legacy
Joe Quasada must seriously have a fetish for making Spider-Man fans suffer because he seems to be going out of his way to make their most famous character completely unreadable nowadays.
Everyone who wrote something with Spiderman does. Is there ANY version of him he's not miserable? Like, sure he may suffer here and there, but at least end with a high note? Family and friends are alive and good (as in not villains), most of his enemies are dealt for good or are just a minor inconvenience, the girl he gets isn't a major 304, etc.
probably reason why some prefer the cartoon and game versions, at least they get things right
@@SuperSylar I have some head cannon that I'd like to make into a fanfic someday of Peter telling Ben and May about his powers and then everything from there, for the most part, goes right for him. There would still be villains and challenges for him to overcome, but I believe it can be done without making Peter a punching bag.
17:48 Yo, my man pulled out his inner raging fan boy with this one.
7:27 Madam Web was voiced by Joan, the wife of Stan Lee and may the two rest in peace.
Nobody really raged at Kamala's death. We just wondered..."Why?" We all knew she was going to return at some point( especially with the Marvels movie coming out around the corner!) but more pissed that Spidey writers kept detouring fans away from MJ & Peter! Enough already!!!😂
Nobody raged or even cared because she was a nothing character. She was basically a diversity hire with unoriginal powers.
That's simply not true. Her 3 fans were quite upset indeed!

I think that pick was another sad attempt at being woke retroactively.
I guarantee you, there was no one rage quitting about the swimsuit special.
That was literally my first thought, it probably made money, only people upset were those not buying comics to begin with
Yeah I remember those being extremely popular when they'd put em out.
i was an avid collector at the time. Can confirm. No one had a problem with it. The art was no more Risque than anything already in every book on the shelf.
@@tomfoolery5680yep... This dude is a beta. There is a reason this is on the thumbnail
anyone who did had to be out of their minds. Unless some had some personal issues with swimsuits
You forgot to mention that they retconned that whole Gwen Stacy/Norman Osborn affair. Turns out it was all false implanted memories and those children were actually clones.
That was an awful thing made just to make up for the whole Gwen/Osborn situation, don't know if it was to appease the fans or just to make things right, but, it was done horribly, the whole kindred story arc is not good, the end is disappointing, and overall it does not fix things correctly. The Gwen/Osborn affair, will always be a taint in the Spider-man saga. And let's not talk abut the current, Paul - Mary Jane/Jackpot stupidity, It's like Marvel hate Spider-man and want him to be always miserable.
I'm glad they retconned that garbage but it still made me rage something fierce when strazenski pulled this garbage...and his reasoning!
All of this was to refer to Pete's battle with mephisto. Demonic this and that. The current writers are ignoring years of storytelling for shock value
@@davidOliver91I exchanged some e-mails with Marvel editors at the time. They pretty much do want Peter miserable all the time.
@@hthrun Well, I can't say I'm surprised, watching the comics and the different stories that marvel has published of Spider-man over the years, the facts (stories like "sins of the past", "part of Spider-man Civil War tie-ins", "one more day", "the clone saga and its many variations", "Superior Spider-man that even thought it has its moments reverts back to bullshit", "Kindred story arc, and Mysterio fucking Osborn, in one panel they implied it"", "Paul") speak for themselves, and I am very, very disappointed, since, he is one of my favorite superheroes, and I was an avid reader of his comics until, well, some time ago.
I do understand the trope of the hero who fights against adversities and triumphs over them, the narrative that once the hero clears the problem, there is no need for him anymore, so there is the need or a reason for him to be a hero again, and when it's written in the right way, it makes up for a compelling and interesting story.
However, it's disgusting the way Spider-man is treated, the need, the pleasure, the necessity to make him loss everything, the need for him to start from scratch and get up on his feet, to have him be taken everything away time, after time.
Personally, I do not enjoy it, from, being a relatable character, he became a joke, a punching bag. I do understand that that gets the bucks, that him being happy can only be achieved or imagined as a fan fiction fantasy or part of another universe where hi might also get screwed, and that is frustrating.
Sorry for the long spiel, I know I'm just another reader, nobody is making me or torturing me to read the comics, but it angers me, this rant might sound stupid or childish, but that's how I feel, I hate seeing something I loved torn to pieces.
Everyone I know loved the swimsuit specials

One More Day was originally supposed to be "One More Day" with his Aunt May. The Story was meant for Peter to come to terms with her death. Joe Quesada however, wanted to return Peter to a younger age, and undo his Mirage to MJ and 20 years worth of Character Development, all because that who Spider-Man was when he first started reading the book. Straczynski; who was writing Spider-Man at the time hated that Quesada had highjacked his book, and hated the new story so much, that he wanted his name taken off the last two issues of the four part series. You can actually see where Quesada takes over the writing by the tone, subject matter, and noticeable dip in quality.
That explains a lot. Chuck Dixon always says that bad comic book stories are due to bad editors.
X-Men Evolution proved that Wanda was Magneto's daughter which honestly I thought this was the bridge Marvel would use to move The X-Men to the MCU.
Xmen evolution was great
in comics she is no longer the daughter as not Pietro is son
They changed their origins due to Disney's feud with Fox at the time. They were trying to deny them new mutant material and since Wanda and Pietro had ties to Avengers they removed the Magneto connection. That, however, could change again ala the current Ms. Marvel revisions.
In case anyone doesn't know, Marvel changed Wanda and Pietros relationship with Magneto again. They made it so Magneto IS their biological father all along. They made that change so perfect that no future writer can ever take it away. And we should thank whoever did that
When Spider-Man got bad writers
It's not that they have bad writers, they are some of them that do in fact care about Spider-man, however, when things go right, they suddenly make him the most miserable character ever, as if that's what fans want. Seriously, read "Renew your vows" it's awesome, I would like to believe that that was what they had in mind for the future of Spider-man, but, him being happy, does not make the money.
The whole J.J. Jameson and Spider-man relationship is well written, including the first Spider-verse story arc, if you include the second Superior Spider-man arc, it's also pretty good until the last issue, where they fall with the same issue and routine of characters losing all their development they had.
@@davidOliver91 yh true, i do hate it when Spiderman has bad stuff happen to him that can go to far like the sins past, mephisto and most recent story
JMS is great writer. Theit was editor ideo to do OMD. The current run is worst because writer didn't read Past asm comics and doing character assassination. Same with punisher rn.
• Yellow Jacket is a rapist
• The Inhuman Show where Medusa is defeated by electric clippers
• Angel isn't an Omega level mutant in the live version
• Making Beast a straight up villain instead of resurrecting the Dark Beast
Damn, swimsuits are the reason I'm reading them man😂.
But, growing up, the Marvel Swimsuit specials were some of my favorite Summertime readings.
17:48 Can we appreciate the fact that his anger rant really gave me a good laugh
She hulk telling a man that watched his dad kill his mom, is chased by a government everyday, can’t even have sex because he has to keep his emotions in check, etc that she has to control her anger more than him because she gets catcalled and “mansplained” almost made me unplug the whole tv
I have to control my anger infinitely more than you er yeah sure did that director even read the comics ???
@@chris26479 exactly she hulk would never say something like that to Bruce.

i can literally taste your pain when you talked about Captain America being a Hydra agent. 😂
The Marvel swimsuit special video on YT has one of the coolest instrumentals ive heard
"What in the history of comic books made anyone think this was a good idea?!" I felt that, Callum.
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Freaking Crybabies👶
Not only did the swimsuit issue sell, but it inspired a new one each year for a few years and other publishers did their own versions.
Not going to lie, I was an 11 or 12 year old boy when the Marvel Swimsuit issue came out, like the same day I hit puberty in a pre-internet world... So, I def wasn't mad at that. 😂
I quit reading comics not long after X-Men Schism and Avengers vs X-Men way back in 2013 because of how much Cyclops being turned into basically a mutant grand wizard p**sed me off. I hear the whole Krakoa era is pretty good, but I hate the X-Men being isolationists, constantly resurrecting each other and Moira McTaggert all of a sudden being an evil mutant.
But moiras many lives are not connected to the Big Bang creating Galactus
Looks like that krakoa era of X-Men May be disappearing soon with the End Of X.
Honestly everything about the new spiderman comic made fans rage making mj cheat on peter kiling off ms marvel
Exactly marvel haven't learnt one bit from their past mistakes at this point Peter and MJ should have like about two kids and should have settled down a long time ago
@@narutouzumaki-nr1rytime always repeats itself.
True. And concerning Ms. Marvel dying it was only so she could be resurrected as a mutant with the light construct powers in order to make her powers and status similar to her MCU counterpart and so she could also join the X-Men.
And in order to make this resurrection and transformation into a mutant possible they retconned it to where it was revealed that she had a X-Gene that didn't activate due to the Terrigen Mists and her resurrection activated her X-Gene.
@@derrickhaggardyeah, that just sounds so fucked up to explain. Such a dumb decision trying to make her similar to her MCU counter part.
Exactly, I hate the fact that the writers disrespecting Stans's legacy
I think Peter and MJ loswing their baby should be on there, that really pissed alot of people off.
But i think it would've been better if they made them try again a few years later and end up succeeding.
But no they didn't
At least we got 100 issues of Spider-Girl. Wish I could say we're STILL getting them, but it is what it is.

If Swimsuits Specials are so bad they make people ragequit then how do you explain the fact that Street Fighter keeps making those? 😂
Cos ppl love them. Only Twitter idiots hate them
Worst part about Kamala's death was that EVERYONE knew that it was going to be undone and Kamala made a mutant to tie into her MCU self.. WHICH HAPPENED i think.. what 3 weeks later
I honestly dont know anyone that actually rages at the swimsuit issues.. Most men and women i talk to find them more goofy then anything and some would actually like to see them return just for the lols
Ah yes.. the clone sage.. an Actually interesting story at the start dragged out due to editorial mandate well past the point of being entertaining
and OH Boy.. Hydra Cap.. That.. was a thing.. and even worse is i remember in interviews marvel claimed that this was the real cap and not an imposter and that the Real Captain America wouldn't swoop in at the end to beat up the evil cap and save the day.. So... How did that story line end.. Oh ya.
and ONE MORE FREAKING DAY.. The story that Marvel just wont give up on and undo even though almost all the fans want it undone.. A stupid story line done because being Married aged Spider-man and made him un relatable.. and a hero cant get divorced, and peter has to be a loser... SO lets just have him make a deal with the devil and then hook up with the editors mandated love interested named after his daughter that fans all hated yet characters in story would constantly ship and say how they her and peter are just perfect together and how amazing they are as a couple
One More Day happened because Gwen shippers got into positions of power. It will only be undone when MJ shippers replace them.
@WOLVERINE25TH It happened because Joe Quesada was editor-in-chief at the time and wrongly believed Peter was no longer an interesting character because of his marriage.
@@micah4029 And he was a Gwen shipper.
I'm glad to see what you chose for #1. I was subscribed to every Spider-Man comic. When they dissolved Peter's marriage to MJ, I wrote e-mails to the editors and got replies. When I saw they were going to let the marriage stay broken, I let all my subscriptions run out. I haven't subscribed since. I don't even think I've bought any Marvel comics since...
I really hope we get a DC edition of this list soon!! That would be VERY fun to watch!!
The only thing worse than Kamala Khan's death was Romita's artwork on the book.
Right now, I feel that most people are rage quitting on the current Zeb Wells written Spider-Man run. Roughly 2 years and 31 issues in, and this is probably the most consistently bad and poorly written Spider-Man run ever.
I dig this! Hail to the Victors!
That Rugby pick them up idea sounds neat. I bet it would be used if they knew about it.
Thank you. Keep watching Michigan Football!
Only thing I would complain about the swimsuit issue would be the choice of artists if there is no Frank Chi, Adam Hughes,Greg Land, Joe Jusko or Milo Mannara pages.
I try to forget that One More Day and Sins Past ever happened.
I never had enough money to collect comic books in earnest, but I did get the X-Men Wedding Album and the second Marvel Swimsuit Issue. Enjoy them very much.
Number 1: Phase 4 MCU.
Yeah man. Phase 4 of the MCU ain't it.
No one like MCU plase.
Phase bore. Mcu gone downhill.
Solid list with the exception of the Swimsuit special. I don't remember it being controversial or disliked. I had a pinup of Mary Jane in my room
Honestly I liked the swimsuit edition.
@Watchmojo, I’m curious, what kind of research was performed to come to this video? As the comic fans I see on i.e. Reddit etc love most of these stories…
The whole Scarlet Witch & Quicksilver not being Magneto's children and not being mutants was mostly because of the stupid movie rights between Fox & Disney which was just bullsh*t!!
So stupid. They are always mutants and magneto kids to me.
mcu fans can never rage quit to the extent comics fans simply due to comics' boggling insanity and century old history

No. 20, I'm surprised the entirety of Zen Wells' new modern comic run series of Spider-Man didn't make the list
The Storm and Black Panther wedding was the highest rage quit I had with Marvel. They tried to justify it with a cheap background story they pulled out of nowhere and completely ignored the many years she dated Wolverine who’s her best love interest.
Then they made them break up anyway over something stupid. I always thought that was a bad match. I definitely think storm and wolverine is up there with rogue and gambit. I hope she gets a better love interest but marvel is garbage ATM so they'll keep things the same
@infinitevos Black Panther comics need to stop leeching off of Storm’s popularity in order to sell comics and stay relevant. Storm even had kids with Wolverine in other dimensions.
@@vginsprdsobepr9698 the movies may have boosted BP above storm popularity wise. I think they should've made new love interests for both of em. My issue is that they keep betraying each other because they care more about their people wakandans for BP and Mutants for Storm. They could make things interesting and have wakanda ally with mutant kind and vice versa but they just want to force stupid drama for the sake of stupid drama
Everything that the writers have done to T'Challa is stupid & rage quitting
I know this is a hot take, but Ben's run as Spidey was actually pretty nice. Considering that they wanted essentially a new spidey with a new cast of characters, it was a safe option. Sadly, they couldn't divorce him from Peter as much as they originally wanted. I guess that's where Miles survived so much better.
I think the ultimate universe was Good in that regard, as it really did celebrate legacy characters a lot better than most marvel Characters. Almost as good as DC I guess.
I'm not passed miles moved over to the 616. But I feel he shined better where he was trying to live up to a deceased Peter Parker
ScarletSpider Was One Of
My Faves, Along with 2099's
Miguel & BlackSuit Spidey!
Amen--Ben is MY favorite. The biggest thing that took Ben out was the whole "Peter was always the fake" twist. If they hadn't tried to pull that one, I think readers would have been more accepting of the change. But, instead, they felt cheated out of 20 years' worth of stories. Marketing's interference at artificially inflating the story with needless and slap-dash tie-ins wasn't helpful either.
Let's clear the misconception here. Ben Reilly aka The Scarlet Spider was a SUCCESS. The problem was:
1. Scarlet Spider was framed and he had to quit being Scarlet Spider!?!? Ugh
2. Norman Osborn being brought back from the dead!?!? Ugh!
3. Norman Osborn hired an Actress to play, "Aunt May" that died, as well manipulated Peter Parker to think he was a clone along!?!? Ugh!!
4. Mary Jane gave birth, Norman Osborn KIDNAPS "Baby May" to which this day has NEVER been resolved. Ugh!!!
5. Ben Reilly dies!?!? Ugh!!!!
Since that time, it just WORSE (if that's possible):
1. Cancelling Spider-Man, only to be brought back.
2. Brand New Day.
3. The whole Norman Osborn / Gwen Stacey Affair!?!?
4. Ben Reilly being brought back, but as a villain "Jackal", then as an anti-hero "Scarlet Spider" (but NOT the one fans KNEW AND LOVED), to once again to be "Spider-Man", oppose to just making a life on his own as Scarlet Spider, FINALLY once again a Villain, "Chasm"!?!?
5. Norman Osborn a Hero!?!? (Come on....really!?!?) Can you imagine if The Joker and Batman were allies.....
Conclusion:
Overall hiring Dan Slott & Zeb Wells as the head-writers for Spider-Man!?!? (Proof that ANYONE can write (BADLY) and continue to have a job, INSPITE of fans complaining about the POORLY written storylines. SUCH SH*T STORIES!
Actually, your problem list (except #1--he was ALWAYS going to become Spidey, just needed a reason) was the "solution" to the ACTUAL problem: that Ben was the original all the time, making readers feel cheated they wasted 20 years with Peter. The rest of those were Marvel's attempts to "fix" things and make fans happy.
A much shorter list if they removed everything Spider-Man related.
That being said, I won’t fall for Marvel Editorial’s trap. If they want to make MJ seem like a toxic choice out of spite, I’ll keep wanting Peter and her to get back together. Out of spite.
What makes Number One even worse: They still haven't reversed it yet.
Yeah they reversed pretty much everything else even sins past.
15:30 I wasn't a regular collector at the time of the clone saga. I did get one or two issues during it and the comics started out with narration saying that Ben Reilly was Spider-Man. I was really confused and wondered who Ben Reilly was...
One more day will always stand out as the singular worst event in Spider-Man history. Thanks, Joe.

Number 1 ended my days as a comic book reader.
Undoing decades of Spidey history for nothing more than shock value was enough for me to walk away for good
The "One More Day/Brand New Day" story will go down in infamy as one of Marvel's WORST Editorial decisions.
This came from Joe Quesada -- the then-Editor-in-Chief --who boasted that the only GOOD Spiderman stories were ones where Peter lived with Aunt May, was still in college, and had no solid relationship with any female character in his story. The whole concept of Peter making the deal with Mephisto -- the Marvel representation for Satan himself -- that would end his marriage to Mary Jane, after STAN LEE himself welcomed the prior decision to have the pair married in the first place, just shows how petty and childish Joe Q. is.
Especially, after it was revealed that other figures in the Marvel Universe -- namely Dr. Strange and Reed Richards -- could tell something had happened to Peter, despite his secret identity being reverted. When folks asked Joe Q. how could he explain this, his answer was, quote:
"It's magic, I don't have to explain it."
This is a grown adult, working as the top Editor for one of the biggest comic book publishers in the world . . . and his answer sounds like a 4th grade fanfic writer's excuse!
It must just be said: Joe Quesada could not write a top-tier comic book script to save his life. 'Nuff Said.
The lackluster writing, characterization, pacing, and narrative choices in movies like Eternals and shows like She-Hulk made me rage quit the MCU.
The worse part is we are getting a sequel to Spider-Man reign in 2024

#1 absolutely deserves its spot. I was just getting into comics in '04, and started reading Amazing Spider-Man in '05 or '06 when Civil War was starting. I was really enjoying it, loved Back in Black, then the ending of One More Day was just...why? When I read the first few issues of Brand New Day, I gave up on the Spidey ongoing series. Since then, I've only read a few arcs or standalone issues that have been recommended to me.
Comic book nerds obviously LOVED the swimsuit specials. I wasnt much into comics so I had no idea they were even a thing but ANYONE that did read comics were slappin off to those issues. Those comics are the only ones that they were unable to keep in prime condition as today you wouldn't be able to find one where the pages weren't stuck together.
I still have not bought a spider-man book since OMD
Also really the swimsuit issues? Not trash recently with punisher? Or No More Mutants? Avengers Disambled?
8:37 Jeremy Kyle: *"Erik Lehnsherr, you are.... NOT the father!."*
On Kamala you missed the worst part...she already turned back (as mutant) after few weeks making the story even more useless. One of many bad things from Wells run, a big candidate for the worst Spiderman writer ever.

“You might be something in the MCU. But between us what’s the worst MC? You!” Oppenheimer
Sabertooth's death, in the feral storyline made me stop reading all Marvel. He was killed like a chump with a magic sword that came out of nowhere.
Making the Maximoff twins become a couple despite them being siblings was the last straw for me. For god's sake they are siblings! I get some people like the whole incest love story, but that's just so damn wrong.
Yeah, a decent list of WTF moments for once. However, the Swimsuit Specials weren't as controversial as you'd like to believe. Maybe for the prudes in attendance, but the rest of us understood the joke and appreciated some of the spectacular art featured within (some maybe a little TOO much, but I digress...). Comics can and should always be allowed to have fun.
I'm going to be honest. Hydra Cap as an EXCELLENT IDEA to me. The idea that Cap was secretly a Hydra agent, awesome. But we all know that it wasn't going to be real or last, I was simply waiting to see who or what would come out this. A perfect Cap villain. Wolverine, Venom, Spivey, Hulk all have multiple version of themselves as enemies. Since Red Skull was getting boring so a Hydra agent who can fight Cap to a standstill was a great idea. Oh well.....nothing happening now
When they did Ultimatum, the Ultimate Universe was functionally already dead. Only Ultimate Spider-Man was hanging on. Ultimatum was going out with a bang.
Just since the 90s, Spidey. Welcome to New York City in 2023.
I liked the Marvel Swimsuit Specials.
Yeah the ending of InHumans vs. X-Men was so wired. It look like there were gonna a big battle to read on, Then all the sudden, It's a end? We didn't even get to see, Black Bolt on how he escape or go in Action? fighting, Megneto or Old Man Logan. Like what the HELL!!!
In reference to the swimsuit issue, fan service can be a good thing.
Why do you think marvel is on a decline?
Because they're not catering to what the fans want.
Pandering to the mainstream is the exact opposite of what fans (who actually buy comics) want.
I always find it morally disgraceful when people fight for fanservice instead of a good story, or good character development and the worst of them is when people justify fanservice as it was the only reason they watch or read a series.
I think you mean "Face Turn". If he was already working for the bad guy, sacrificing his life to stop said bad guy would be a face turn, not a heel turn.
I think heel turn was in regards to his having been working with the villain, not the sacrifice part.
Marvel's swimsuit issues where pretty entertaining I have all of them and I don't think anyone had a problem with those especially (at the time) when storm, rogue and psylock were at the peak 👌 and hero's reborn was the best series ever 👍
Morality and ethics are lost on most.
@@truthspreader1996 not sure what you mean but ok
Seen way worse in things I loved way more.
Hank Pym abusing Janet should be on this list. In both the main universe and the ultimate line.
The second Wolverine film me and my friend are massive fans of silver samurai and to see him turn into a stupid robot we got up and walked straight out of cinema
Did you get a refund.
@@rolando90s tried to they wouldn't let me because I saw 95 per cent of the film 😡
Re #1, I'm still waiting for the moment when Ghost Rider - someone who KNOWS firsthand what deals with Mephisto will result in - subjects Peter to the Penance Stare for pulling such a bone-headed move.
It's crazy that the MCU managed to loosely adapt the one more day storyline successful.
