How to Paint a Light Effect

- čas přidán 1. 01. 2020
- James Gurney paints a snow-covered farm road using a limited palette of casein tube colors. He uses four methods to achieve an eye-catching light effect:
1. Mixing the paint on a gray palette surface
2. Priming the surface with a glowing “effect area”
3. Building up to a bright accent.
4. Creating a flare/glow with pastel.

It's amazing how James takes most boring and ordinary places and makes them magical on paper! It shows us that beauty is everywhere, we just need to learn to see it!
his paintings are so realistic and unrealistic at the same time wow
They're ALIVE. Colors feel like sun and melted snow. He is amazing.
He's an impressionist but the values make it look realistic to the eye
It's like he used the least amount of detail possible to make something realistic. Idk how to describe it but its beautiful.
He's an impressionist and a master of light.. much like Sorolla 😌
My favorite kind of art.
It's fascinating how so much "color" can come from focusing on tones!
the first 15 seconds of this video are more useful than most entire channels of tutorials on youtube
James you are simply amazing my Friend, Graeme
James you're a poet with paint
I feel like this is what it would be like to learn from Da Vinci or other great masters. Mr. Gurney you are the culmination of art masters throughout time. It's always a pleasure seeing you paint.
I don’t even paint or draw or anything, but I’m a huge fan of your art and craft. That soothing voice is a bonus. Thank you Mr. Gurney for the time and effort put into these videos.
Thank you, Fernando.
You have taught me a lot since I bought Color and Light... Now I'm a huge fan. Thank you for sharing your creative knowledge.
Great book. I have learned so much about looking for the various characteristics of light from it.
@@passage2enBleu Indeed, it's my fav art book so far.
You are truly amazing when it comes to light. Great video and I thank you very much. Blessings and be safe.
I'm just happy I lived in the same generation is this legend. Cheers from the Philippines, James!
Need me some of that cars driving on farm gravel road ASMR
Mike Grayson I didn’t know Elizabeth warren could fly
i almost feel that my own talent is diminished when i see your INCREDIBLE ABILITIES. each video you have blows my mind.
Your book on on Color and Light just came!!! I am spell bound!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Forget everything else I was going to do!!!!
it's always a pleasure to see you painting
AWESOME! Thats a gorgeous painting and rendering of light! Congratulations James! I Love your paintings. I also read your book, Color and Light... Keep Rocking and God Bless you and your painting Journey!! 🙏🙏🙏
The undercoating makes an interesting effect, really glows, I have always wondered how to get the sunlight to separate and you have shown it very well, of course.
You're such a great teacher! This is by far, the best channel I've subscribed to. Instant favourite!
Your results in traditional art makes me doubt myself so much 🥲
Then I watch the video and you inspire me
Do you sell any of these small paintings? Theyre absolutely gorgeous.
Ok that's really cool but it doesn't look all that the same
1 min later: *what just happened*
I took about 30 minutes to watch this video i keep pushing the cursor back to see that transition between the underpainting and the almost instantaneous pop that he achieves by laying down lighter tones on the area with the 'raking' light (which is a term i just learned today). Fantastic work James, as usual
lol This is me while watching ALL of his videos ! It's fascinating! blobs and smears (to my untrained eye) all of a sudden BECOME REALITY...it's so great to watch as he does his thing.
Mr, Gurney is painting for an hour and a half and this painting is terrific. In an hour and a half my painting is ready for the dumpster!
I wish you had been my teacher when I was starting out...thanks for all your hard work that you've shared with us!
But the whole thing’s LIT 🤷♂️🙌💖
Funny!
I only know the secret meaning of 'lit' because I have a teenager. Lit, as well as 'sick'
Your painting is far better than original scene around you. There is lot to learn from you.
I like that warm yellow highlight against the cool lit area. I remember when you painted the jeep on the ramp at the dealership, and you added all the warm highlight at the beginning of the painting. Thank you for demo of this technique. It's a great little painting.
Love that labelling of the scene at the end... effect area, reflected light, field in shadow... do your thumbnail sketches people (me included). He knew his value plan before he picked up the brush. Beautiful
Anytime I feel like I cant draw and am ready to quit, I always watch your videos for motivation! Love your work so much!
Thanks a lot - always enjoy your paintings, how you explain and let us directly see the making of, and your true personality shining through as lights and shadows, inviting us along your voyages.
The End was original. Wow!
Thank you mr.Gurney :-)
I don't know why but I'm always so pleased when I see your clips, because they look like the same cheap ones I buy, even though I can't imagine something less important than the clip you are using to hold the page back.
I want to be this crafty when I get older, my overman, someone I look up to that inspires me to improve.
I clicked on the video for learning and I found inspiration... but really I leave happyly mindblown because of the creative endscreen :D
Thank you again Mr. Gurney!
That light reflector looks like a very neat tool.
Thank you James. Excellent teaching!
I'm mainly a pen & ink artist and a play around with watercolor from time to time, but the overall principles you discuss here are universal. We are ultimately looking at what the light is doing (and not doing) when we capture a scene. Very well explained! It always helps to hear a fellow artist explain the fundamentals in a way I've not quite heard before.
Always looking forward to your videos. Thank you.
rewatching all of your vids, love it
Thank you James
This guy never ceases to amaze me
Extraordinarily demonstrated.Thanks
I'm learning a lot. That's a nice effect.
I love the use of pastels to enhance the focal point highlight. Wow. This is just fabulous!
This painting is just mind blowingly beautiful. I can't stop looking at it.
a little spark of magic, right there!
Fabulous! Such a pleasure to watch these simple everyday masterpieces come together!
What a concise way of showing how light and value work together! Thank you sir!
Just found this channel and I'm blown away by your stuff ... so effortless

Sooooo beautiful!
I'm always blown away by how you manage to capture/paint the light! Simply amazing!
Wow!! That is gorgeous! 😦❤️
Amazing tutorial and beautiful piece Mr Gurney! thank you so much
Always fun to see where a great artist plunks down his/her easel ... beautiful example of how dramatic lighting is captured using these techniques ... its a beauty!
Really, really great. I always learn so much watching you paint, James!
Wow....that was an excellent exhibition of values and contrast...love it. Thanks James!
That would look like a very beautiful background for a Christmas card 😍😍
Excellent! I love how vibrant it is at a distance around 7:28. I adore your light effect paintings esp. w/ limited palettes. Thank you so much!

Amazing lesson. Thank you so much! It seems so simple to get a good head start on creating an amazing piece, it's actually encouraging to have a go. Brilliant.
Hi Mr. James, great job, thanks to share with us your painting tips.
Thank you for this tutorial!
I now am excited to try casein. Awesome tutorial, as always sir. Cheers
Never saw you before yesterday so only watched the one video. I subscribed and watched more and find you an amazing painter. I must learn to become more loose while I paint. Love your videos, so delightful and instructional.
Been following all your great videos and learned so much about casein painting. Thanks James.
Love it. I have been a watercolor painter for decades but must check out casein.
Another terrific video with great tips. Wonderful painting as always! Thank you!
Looks real. Really really cool
Wow, Very nature colors and such details...
Wowsers!
Blown away by how the highlight just pops out! The mild yellow hue compliments the blue surrounding shadow so nicely. I just bought Color and Light from an art convention in Asia, can't wait to dig into it!
Love your work. Great stuff.
You really are a living master.
Thanks James! And thank you for your consistency posting new videos all the time... It is always helpful. This one is a great example of what I love about painting: the image you created is so much more beautiful than what the camera picks up! HAPPY 2020 to you and looking forward to watching more of your work.
quick and effective. great editing. straight to the point .deserves a lil 👍
Ooooooh my god that is a beautiful painting

That is a really accomplished painting, excellent!🎨👌
I am from Brazil and enjoy watching your videos to pratice my English
Ugh this video was so simple yet effective that I’m obliged to subscribe. Great content!
you are super talented... I could watch your videos all day...thanks for posting
Stunning, as is every art video you post. I always get such a wonderful feeling of peace and serenity when seeing your paintings here and/or watching you create them. That's my favorite kind of art--something that gives me a sense of peace, serenity, awe, and wonder. It's great to see what you do technically, but it's even better to see the way you use that technical ability to create your own world within your painting and invite the viewer into that world--to touch the viewer's heart and soul.
Beautiful. Almost cried
Hi J.G.
Just wanted to say I watch your videos at the end of the day and I really appreciate your colour science/knowledge and how you integrate so few colours into one vibrant painting. Like a big illusion. Thank you for your quality content.
Wow everything must be so much more beautiful in Doodle Land
What a fine talent.
That was awesome.
I downloaded his 3 Living Sketchbooks from the appstore. They are a great inspiration.
Thank you for the lesson, I will put it to good use.
