Bill Kelliher slows down the burning riff to illustrate how he uses open notes, bends, and hammer-ons for this 'Emperor of Sand' track. - Hudba
Bill is an absolute riff god, the modern prog James Hetfield
Sounds like an older Deftones riff when it's played slowly.
Mastodon is one of the best live shows I ever saw... absolutely BADASS
Thunder Buddy agreed!! Just saw them on June 25th and they were absolutely killer!!
Thunder Buddy yep! Saw them early this year. So good.
I'm about to see them live for the first time September 15th in Grand Rapids. I had never been to concerts in my childhood or my teenage years so I'm trying to make up for it now that I'm a bit older. It just seems wrong for someone like me to not go to concerts. I play guitar and bass, I have a decent sized record collection, and basically just eat, sleep, and breathe music. Now I'm old enough to drink, so it'll be an interesting show for me. I've only been to 3 concerts. I saw Avenged twice, Ghost once, and now Mastodon. Gojira is next in line. I'm keeping an eye out for those US tour dates.
@@TheSamuraiApocalypse i am 15 and just saw Mastodon live last Saturday. It was one of the best concerts I’ve seen
Roots Remain has one of my favorite solos!
CJSchecter96 Yes! I keep waiting to see if someone posts a lesson for the solo
CJSchecter96 hell yeah I'll toast to that!
Craig Adams Hinds is one of my favorite guitarists. Him and Kelliher are just incredible
Secrets of Lost Empires absolutely man. Pretty damn tight live as well.
Andrew Tkach Had vip tickets last month for their show, and saw them do a soundcheck. Played Sultan's Curse and Sleeping Giant. Was goddamn transcendent being able to really watch what they were doing up close and without the light show
That ESP looks incredibly smooth to play. Looks like stainless frets, too. Satin!
hiberNative ESP doesn't use stainless steel frets unfortunately.
@@cosmocalypse3708 That's a custom shop. Its probably stainless steel frets.
Beautyyyy faadeees
Deaaaath deeecaaayys
and all that I have come to loose, gone so long it doesn't matter anyway...
Can you get Brent hinds to teach the solo for this song?? I love it so much and learning that stuff by ear is insaaanely hard
This. Mastodon has some amazing solos and riffs but that 90 seconds might be the most amazing and emotion invoking moment in their entire body of work.
I'd shit
I bet Brent doesn’t even know it himself 😂
@@tomsaint786 "Here's how I write solos: I don't." -Brent Hinds
If you still struggling to play it, i can help you, I've nailed it to the core pretty much. Reply to the comment if you are interested :)
I've patiently awaited this moment
The best song I've heard live in my whole life.
Bill's haircut is on point
His stache is on point too
He makes it look so easy 😭been at this riff for like a solid 2 hours and all these double string pulling and sliding is EATING at my fingers
Bill is the step dad I never knew I wished I had.
Gibson must be really kicking themselves now!! That looks and sounds one awesome guitar!!!
@Thought Dumpster no shit sherlock
I actually like the sound of it slower
AndersonWave17 agreed
I was thinking the same thing!..I kinda liked it slower too..
Its really cool, I love the original speed but this is super cool also. Just a great riff in general even slowed down
It sounds like an early Deftones riffs then
After 20 years, power-chords got redeemed
Bill is the Man!
Woolly Mammoth rules!!!!
Bill even makes a combo amp sound fuckin awesome!
Thank you.
Elmyr!
Had a lot of fun there...
The blue Sparrowhawk looks way better than the military green. In my opnion anyway.
I like the blue... it's got pazzaz.
The (new?) Black one looks nice as well
A classic shape needs a classic paint job
Is it an esp?
Kristopher Davis Yep.
I also use my left hand to "pull off"
For anyone curious I believe they play in drop c on this song seeing as Bill is playing one finger chords on the low strings
Trequiqui Standard C
It's drop C...in D standard with the low pitched string tuned down to C
Bill truly is a master at riffs, right up there near Jerry Cantrell who tops in my book
i also liked it slow'd down!
I WANT THE CHORUS!!!
When he moves up the fretboard, is it in a particular scale/mode or just move the same fingering up the fretboard cause it sounds cool?
It's not really diatonic. He just goes up a minor third and plays the same thing; same fretting, same intervals and even includes the open note. I guess you could say it gives it a really diminished feel (so Locrian mode) but it isn't diatonic. Divinations does the same thing but instead of going a minor third higher it instead goes a minor third lower but up an octave. It's just something that creates a lot of tension :)
Sounding good/cool is all you need to concern yourself with IMO
My god... that guitar is beautiful. I nearly bought one last week but the pickups are black. I could change them out... so I'll save up a bit more.
I have one. Plays amazing and the black top Lace Sensor Divinator pickups it comes with sound mint. However the new model will have Seymour Duncans instead. Not sure the reason for the change
That Sparrow Hawk is tight !
Monster tone
Did anyone else notice the hanging thread on his sweatband?
That looks like a zipper
what tuning is the guitar?
Marco N probably Drop C
drop C....D standard with the low string dropped to C
why do those legato notes sound offbeat?
kimseniorb At slowed speed it's harder to do the subdivided notes; those single note bits are combinations of 8th and 16th notes, and because he wrote the riff I'd say he just played it at the intended speed, and the rhythm feel was part of that.
That looks more like a bad technique. Its just odd that the guy that talented and famous can't play really slow legato lines in time. His muscular memory is only trained to fake his riffs into sounding "kinda" fast. You can see this all the time with beginners who play "fast" solos, but when you ask them to slow it down, the can't do it. But I guess this works for a slightly punky feel of mastodon.
Technically, I guess, but if you've seen them live they are extremely tight all-round, and actually in particular Bill. Personally I don't care if he can't play his stuff slow!
sure. I love the dude actually, just was a bit surprised. yes fast spmehow it works well
kimseniorb
It's not bad technique per se, more like bad preparation to be teaching a riff. It's most likely due to not using a metronome, or possibly never having written it out with correct rhythm notations. If you're not using a metronome or any sort of steady beat, it's nearly impossible to drastically slow something down and have every note in time. And if you've just never written it out properly, it can be hard to tell what's what, you just know how it's supposed to sound, so you play how it's supposed to sound and don't really pay attention to what it's called because most often people aren't going to ask you that question.
I'm certain if he had done one of these two things it would have sounded more together. But, he's a ridiculously talented guy regardless, just maybe a little ill prepared for this sort of situation.
Tuning?
jetway gigolo Drop C most likely
D standard, drop C
This track is in Drop C.
Is it weird that I want Bill to adopt my dad so he could be my Grandpa?
Bill is probably younger than your dad but okay lol
wow I wasn't even close to playing it right...
Evan Davidson hahaha, I fucked up a little bit too. I had no idea he was even in drop C until just now
What guitar is that? I want it!
It's the new ESP Bill Kelliher signature. Not 100% on the name. Something like Sparrowhawk..But he quit Gibson because they're stupid and wouldn't make a guitar to his specs. Idiots. Now look where you are.
Oh it looks sorta like a hamstrom fantomen too
Buy a Schecter.
Chuck Beef are the diamond series good? Like the omen etc. $300 range is all I’ll ever be able to spend on guitars cuz I want multiple guitars or do you recommend one expensive guitar n no choices? For example I love my squier strat do I just buy the fender of my dreams or keep my squier cuz I love it and get a epi 339 and a shecter diamond. Serious question . Maybe charvel instead of fender I want them all but I’d have to hold and play a real strat but there can’t be much improvement other than pick ups cuz my squier feels n plays amazing
Bruce Kelly bro, take a look on agile guitars, they're best for this price. Also you can check schecter, but omen series will disappoint you later
Name of the strap???
couch guitar straps
"Hello, I'm Bill Kelliher and I'm here to make this look effortless lol". I mean. When I see John Petrucci play, sure it doesn't look hard to him, but it still looks difficult. When Bill plays, however, it looks deceptively simple..
It's hard to cover a mastodon song properly. There is many subtilities in their riff.
You have to set that amp on fire and let it turn to dust. The sooner the better.
Sounds like a line 6 spider!
Dan Higginson , this shows that if any guitarist's glorious tone isn't recorded properly, everything sounds like a Line 6.
Heyman is absofuckinlutely right
Do FOO FIGHTERS rig rundown!!!
+giveaway of Hagstrom Pat Smear and Fender Chris Shiflett.
That neck is so thin 👌
No homo
Why can't he say "fingering"?
Nice tone
This is only noise
Hani Saleban would you care to share with the class, what you prefer?
And what you wrote are only letters.
Where are we going with this logic?
And you are only a fart bubble.
Holy shit! We got a goddamn genius!
Correct, music is noise.
Idk but this made me unsubscribe...
They might as well shut the channel down now that you're no longer subscribed to it.
