I've never heard of this guy but, man, isn't he THE BEST interviewee? Bursting with enthusiasm and wonder. Fantastic storytelling.
Damn. I need to hear Foodstamp Love now!
Holy cow. That was amazing.
A perfect example of, "If you dig what you do, do it because you dig it "
his shows are even better! I just got to see him in Ann Arbor with Paul Thorn, and they were incredible!
Go see him live, it's a great time
Love his enthusiasm and energy for sure.
Agreed - instantly got me hooked on the story. Another hero's journey to aspire to
Forget that Dos Eques guy. THIS is the most interesting man in the world!
Best thing about Steve Poltz - he never grew up! That youthful excitement and wonder is alive and well in him.
Ditto.......I loved Dr Demento!
@@libbytown I loved 91X!
Steve is a genuine, modern day American troubadour.
Thank you for bringing Steve Poltz into my life....I never knew what I was missing!
I didn't know the name Steve Poltz until today, but I'll be damned if this wasn't the Otis Gibbs interview that just hit home and resonated the most. Out of the so, so, so many Otis Gibbs interviews I've watched and had already supremely enjoyed. What a storyteller...and what a life he's led. I'll go see him in whatever hole in the wall venue he finds himself in within driving distance of my home. I think I'm going to watch it again just to hear it all once more.
Poltzy is worth a long drive - his shows are life changing!
A local treasure here! Thanks Otis (“can I call you Otis?”) for putting him on the mic!
First time I saw Jewel sing we were both just kids, I was sitting on a barstool by my daddy at the Yah Sure Club, she might have been in jr high school. It was clear to me even then that her soul had already lived many lives.
Steve is really genuine, love this guy.
Otis you need to have Steve on more often. He is so freaking funny. He needs to have his own podcast
Thanks
I Love this guy so much . Steve is really honest ,entertaining and refreshing. A real performer whos in it for the right reasons and a hillarious style of storytelling. Thank you
Great Steve Poltz interviews, right up there with the Kenny Vaughn interviews. Outstanding!
All good art is like smoke that finds all the openings doors and windows failed to understand how to block. ☘ Thank you both.
❤ good...
I cant believe he is 64yo. Possibly my favourite Otis Gibbs interviewee yet. God bless Otis for introducing folks to all these awesome storytellers!
73-year-old Southern California native… Congratulations on having your song played on Dr. Demento!!
So exciting to hear your song on FM radio… I remember the first time I had a song played on college radio absolutely amazing experience
I can't believe this is 35 minutes. It flew by, and it's entertaining as hell.
I think a Steve Poltz/Todd Snider/Otis Gibbs concert tour would go over big
I think Steve Poltz is really kind of a national treasure. One of my heroes. Thanks, Otis, for this excellent conversation with Steve.
This guy is amazing, for me one of the best interviews on your channel Otis. Definitely up there with Kenny Vaughan… looking forward to listening to more of him ❤
Man, I became a fan of him probably 20 years ago. I heard him on an NPR station. His way of storytelling and song writing is totally unique. An artist like him is a very rare breed.
What a cool dude Steve is !!! I have been a gigging musician since the late 60’s. I totally vibe with his attitude. I’m sober for 12 years myself and still happy to be making music at age 69.
Otis, you know the most interesting people. I feel like I could sit down and talk with Steve Poltz for hours. He is equal parts storyteller and philosopher. I find him really engaging because his enthusiasm for music and life in general really shines through. Those thirty-eight minutes flew by quickly and left me wanting much more. I love all of your videos, but this one really struck a chord with me, perhaps more than any of your others. I had a smile on my face from beginning to end.
Otis, I would one thousand times rather hear from people like Steve than any big star you could name. The household names that we all know have been interviewed so many times, they have canned responses to everything. They have images to protect. Your guests are much more interesting. 🎉Your interviews are outstanding because you make them about the person you’re interviewing and not about you. I noticed that you left more of your part of the conversation in this one than you typically do. I think it added a lot to the video and I hope you’ll do if more frequently.
Thanks for introducing us to Steve. I hope we’ll be hearing more from him.
Otis and Steve…thanks so much . We are your people.
Steve tells it like it was, I had forgotten about Dr. Demento, but remember listening to him, what a fond memory. I love the phrase we aren't going to Poltzurize this song. Steve is such a unique, genuine character!
How does someone go from vaguely familiar to the guy you'd most want to have a beer with in Nashville or San Diego.
Otis - these are some fantastic interviews, remarkable and hilarious stories. If this channel gets some deserved traction, it could get big, very big. Poltz is a gem.
I [now] love Steve Poltz!!!
Delightful. The Big Pink T shirt seals the deal.
I love this guy. In 1994 I was living in a vw bus with my girlfriend driving around the country following the grateful dead surfing and doing 90s things ( if you were there you know) and he's spot on he mentioned that song and it immediately took me back there. Thanks otis. Peace ✌️ everyone from Cleveland. Stay cool 😎
You've hit the nail right on the head. Any music will be recognized as a hit when it's come from the heart not contrived.
I am loving this. Just loving it. Thank you, Otis.
Wonderful story and character… I don’t know Steve and his music, but he tells the stories of those times so beautifully and was so much humor. Absolutely delightful thank you.
I remember Shane Howard my all time favourite (along with you Steve of course) say words to that effect about travelling to the gigs costs money but the music was free.
This is pure gold!!! Really really great. Thank you Otis. Thank you Mr. Poltz. I feel different in a good way after listening to these two interviews.
What a fantastic interview , very encouraging , down to earth, insightful, and some pearls of wisdom and comedy , how enjoyable, have a better day, and thankyou to you both . 😊
Inspiring and joy-filled! Thank you Steve and thank you Otis… 😎
This is Theo Otis.. I love what you are doing for us. I could listen to your friends and you every day. It’s a real lesson of what is real in the world..
Great interview. I could listen to him go on for hours! Thanks O!
Remember watching Steve Poltz play at the troubadour in Brisbane, playing well past the closing. I ask the venue owner how long can he play for? Happily hearing "Poltz is the only one who can play for as long as he wants" 🎵🏆
This is outstanding!!!✌️
Brilliant. For the record I love it when a performer tells the story about how they cowrote a song and then performs it in their voice.
Love Steve Poltz episodes!
Been a fan since the 90s. Lightning 100 would play Silver Lining. He's funny as hell. This needs to be a regular thing.
Otis, Steve, thank you so much for this! Having the worst week, but these stories have me glued and on the edge of my seat! Can’t believe this is my first (definitely not the last time being entertained by Steve. Paused the interview long enough to download some of his music to get me started, searched his tour dates, Nashville tonight, I’m an hour away and tempted to make the drive even if I have to hear it through the wall! Can’t help wondering if he and Todd Snider have ever co-written? Thanks again Otis for all of your episodes. Everything is timing, no doubt!!!✌🏼🙏🏼
I have never stopped a video so many times to watch something or someone that was referenced in a video. Steve is an awesome story teller. Thoroughly enjoyed this video.
Wow! Love Steve Poltz...he's funny!
fantastic interview Otis! Steve's generosity in sharing is pure artistic nourishment!!
I love this dude. He had an all-star band for his record. I'm halfway through this interview and want find this record
Otis, you've hit a goldmine with Steve's great stories.
Great point about being amenable later in life. There’s a great lesson in that.
Wow, again Steve is a really cool guy. His stories are top shelve no doubt. I thought Kenny took the cake but Steve is right up there! Bravo!
Otis great interview Steve is a true Carlos Castaneda😅😊 I love these stories and the journey thank you
Hey Otis ! You've got to do more with Steve Poltz, highly entertaining, and what a great storyteller. " Dead Skunk" and Alan Sherman.. Classic ! LoL !! 🎵 Cheers from Nevada
Love this guy! Great story teller ! Super talented
I'm a heterosexual man who has been married for 25 years but do you think, if I fed him and was really kind to him, Steve could come and live with me?
Otis, sir…you run with some truly gifted and interesting people. Mr. Poltz, besides his music and songwriting, is a truly gifted story teller. He is one of your best interviewees, and really fun to listen to.
Otis you are American hero getting all these stories so they live on 👍👍👍
Fantastic interview Otis. Thank you Steve!
I realized the movement of female singers in the 90s, but never realized it as a movement from Grunge. Great point.
Jewel performed The National Anthem at The Indianapolis 500 Mile Race last year and it was stellar
Everyone should watch it right now
Thanx for this Otis....the greatest story ever told....
I'm from San Diego as well. Didn't really ever know Steve, but I was around when he was. Played with the Rugburns I'm sure a few times early on? memory is foggy at this point? maybe Megalopolis? I think we more or less ran in different circles. He (and Jewel) became legends of course. I remember it went from have you seen this girl Jewel at a coffee shop (which I never did. not my scene) to holy shit she's on MTV like overnight. back then San Diego was exploding. it had been dubbed the next Seattle for breakout artists, sadly it never really happened for more than a minute few. kind of like our sports teams. only good enough for a season or two? haha... so great seeing this interview. it's confirmation to all the local folklore from long ago. your interviews, commentary, and ideas are the best Otis! keep up the good work!
Hilarious stories. What a life! More power to ya Steve! 😀
This very well may be the longest answer to a question.
Great interview. 👍 I love that Big Pink shirt 😊
You should get to know Steve.

Last of the “Red Hot Troubadours” great Interview Otis! Makes me remember why I went this way, at the fork in the Road.
God, I could listen to steve tell me stories all day long. He is wonderful and makes me laugh so hard. What a great guy. Thank you for sharing this.
This dude is such a great storyteller! I can’t believe he’s 64! I guess a life of music and surfing will keep anybody young!
Love this guy!
I could listen to Steve telling stories for days he is such a cool dude, he is the DUDE!!😂
Steve Poltz, is a Genuine Simple Man and has seen & done so much! It’s a pleasure to hear his fantastic stories of Music with that antidote of his Father receiving that $130,000 check is incredible! Great Interview Otis!
thank you thank you thank you !!!!!!
lol I was just singing Hello Muddah to myself the other day. Great interview.
Glad to know I'm not the only soul with Wacky Westerns, Goofy Greats AnD OThErS still rattling around in the old grey matter..and pre-Hippie flowers to Roger Miller for just having been Roger Miller. I'll forgo the thousands of other campy quips floating around up there. ☕ Y'all served up another great cup today. ✌️
I used to have a massive crush on Jewel, haven't heard of her for so long
Hello, Otis! I’m a fairly new subber to your channel and have only watched maybe 10 or 15 of your videos here, but Steve had me in stitches with his stories. Not only that, his outlook and advice about taking suggestions or incorporating others’ ideas on music/lyrics is on the mark. “At least give it 24 hours…,” is great advice.
I could sit down with Steve and/or you and have a great time just kicking it. I’m a musician who can no longer play my drums, but I still absolutely love music. It’s saved my life at times, I’m sure. I really relate, too, with no longer getting high or drinking. I had my crazy times and I cherish a lot of the people I met along the way, but the frying my brain is in the past. I wasn’t very good at parceling drugs out to myself in a moderate way, but I was a happy drunk.
Thank you for these videos. I’m enjoying the ride.
Oh, yeah… Dr. Dimento was one of my favorite radio series. “Here I am at Camp Granada”
Thanks Otis for bringing us these guys who hold the history of modern music.
Love the rugburns!!
the world is lucky to have a Poltzy and Otis ill try to not suck and do so good thanks for the inspirations much love thanks - SJOCR
Here you go Steve, you said it, "Welfare Tit" is the next big hit for Billy Strings!
With Steve’s humor and love of word play he would have fit right in with our motley group from the late 70’s/80’s Eugene and the Eunuchs. Our musical talent though was meager but we had fun despite our limits. Look forward to more interviews with Steve.
Thank you much, Otis for another great episode with Steve Poltz. Sheepishly, I have to admit that I knew of his name, but couldn't tell you why his name looked and sounded familiar. Regardless, he is one of the best story tellers of any topic, but especially one of my favorites, the music industry. He is so bright, charming, funny, and earthy. He could've been a great actor too, I just know it deep down. I will see him live if I can because I too come from the era of Dr. Demento, Smothers Brothers on TV, Zappa, Elvis, and Elvis, James Taylor, The Dead, John Prine, The Replacements, Jewel, etc. This guy is an awesome entertainer. Peace and best of health to you both.
What a great interview
Damn Steve…you just keep dropping all these names of folks I used to know…JEFF BERKLEY ROCKS!!! I moved away from San Diego County in early 2000 and I’d kept in touch with him from ‘95/‘96 or so…until about the time that MySpace was fizzling out and Facebook was rising into its early heyday day years…. Thanks so much for kickstarting my feeble brain…oh yeah…and thanks Otis for all you do to get theses incredible stories out there for the public to better understand what goes on behind the scenes of musically artistiic folks…!!
Omg. This guy is priceless. Best storyteller ever, and a True musician. The birds outside towards the end...just giving affirmation to his Truth. God bless Otis Gibbs for giving Us this interview!
Steve and Otis, my peepulz!
Ottis, Steve is magic in a bottle, what a story teller! 😂😂 My advice is to hold him captive and keep on milking him for stories, my wife and I have been crying with laughter! If I had of realized the stories he had I would have abducted him while he was down here in Australia…👀🤫😂😂🤣
He is so down to earth and he a real jewel..
I wish La Posta was still 24 hours. It closes at 9 p.m. now and it's a drag.
I love Steve- what a guy! Met him at Red Wing Roots festival in VA, DelFest, he’s just a great entertainer and a super nice dude. Don’t need to be anything more…
Please tell the birds in the backyard thank you for the background music! 🐦
Love Steve’s enthusiasm for life. Such a cool guy. Thanks for interviewing him. You guys should do a road trip together and check out some places.
Steve, you are the man I didn’t quite fully realize I totally want to be. I’m newly retired and I have enough money to pay my bills but the caveat to that is that I would have to stay at home and I don’t want to. I want to travell as far from home as I can and sustain my travel with my voice, guitar, songs and an unabiding faith that I can be in the right place at the right time enough times to experience enough life-affirming moments to propel me forward. To take off into the great unknown and get to know it. Thanks for the inspiration.
Poltz is great. Been a fan of his for a long time.
What an inspiring man…..I am thoroughly enjoying listening to this wildly amusing, lucid and erudite artist!
This may be my favorite episode, Otis! I could listen to you and Steve for hours on end. Big thank you!
Steve Poltz is great! I'd love to hang out with the dude. I'm gonna look up & find one of his gigs to go to. Thank you, if I may call you Otis? 😂 Happy Trails!✌
Encore❤
Loved how the Lee Sklar connection came up... Great storyteller (as usual with your friends)
