That´s pretty dope! I´m still rocking my G9 MI, just recorded a videoclip last week and AF and colors are still great ♥
The one camera i wish i would have bought on release. The G9 MI was my favorite camera of all time. I have the S5II and am very happy with that one. If i could sell all my Sony stuff at a good price I'd easily jump into Panny.
Now g9ii is winning my heart as a music video producer with the autofocus thing
Yeah the autofocus is nice!
Loving my G9 MII, had the GH6 but the streaking issue in VLOG was a deal breaker so exchanged it for the G9 MKII (what is the best way to write that?). Been posting regularly figuring it out and experimenting. Colours are lovely, out of the box a slight shift from the GH6 but not a deal breaker. The auto focus is sublime (at last) and makes such a difference on shoots, not having to micro twitch your focus as you are never 100% sure lol. With the new firmware update, stellar. Just got to get a couple more good lenses and she will be complete.
Matthew - I have a slightly crazy (fringe) question for you that may be relatable for some of us DSLR era laggards struggling to move properly across to mirrorless. How does the S5II/X and G9II Raw compare with 5DIII with Magic Lantern raw?
I have a G9 and really like it but would love to know whether, after acquiring one of these two LUMIX cameras, I would never needed to reach for my 5DIII again with respect to video!
For your consideration!
Take care.
Not 100% sure since I am not a photographer first nor have I personally shot on that camera however I am pretty pleased with how my photos turn out. Now with that said I do shoot photos in a very backwards raw using a custom photo setting with the video profile VLOg then turn on real time out, and shoot raws + JPG so my JPG photos have a pre baked photo that is basically pretty close to done and my RAWS I can touch up and go too if I don’t like the JPG. But that normally isn’t that way to do it😅
@@MatthewDangyou Thanks Matthew - that is interesting to know.
You have however reinforced my expectation that my question is a bit at the fringes. Magic Lantern is a powerful and unique hack that allowed (and continues to allow) the filming of DNG RAW on certain Canon models: EOS M, 5DII, 5DIII etc. This was initially just 1080p but subsequent higher MP files. The videos produced look stunning. If you have a chance, check out Zeek’s channel. He is the guru on Magic Lantern RAW esp re the EOS M, which is a modest point and shoot which is transformed with Magic Lantern.
Most probably the advantage of the gh6 is going to be that you will be able to get it for less than $800 on the used market soon. So I guess if you're committed to micro 4/3rds, that'll be a good option, however given the fact that you can get a used S5 for the same price, the gh6 just seems like it was a huge mistake by lumix. I think the streaking issue is something that they didn't think was worth fixing and so when that came out they just abandoned the camera completely. At least that's my opinion. :-) who knows?
Still using a GH5S and debating about grabbing up a GH6 in 2024 epically now since price will hopefully go down 🎥
SMART! If you are rocking any manual lenses or cinema glass this camera is perfect!
@@MatthewDangyou yeah at this point I always shoot manual & have a separate autofocus camera whenever I want to vlog, but deff need that GH6, how hefty are them file sizes though if you don’t mind me asking?
@omaralcantara1142 honestly it is like a 1gb a minute basically but not terrible
I wonder what more Lumix wants to add to the GH7 or GH6 ii.
Internal NDs?
More megapixels?
A bigger camera with more hardware?
8k?
More DR boost?
The GH line is reaching a plateau gradually. And Lumix keeps juggling in video stuff into the G series.
If you use anything from GH5 upwards, you're pretty much with most of what you can get from a MFT camera.
I still use a GH4 with my GH6 and the GH4 still slaps big time for my wedding and product shoots.
Internal ND would be soooo nice
G9II has phase detection only in afc mode, not in afs. Unless the firmare update also made that ?
Also many GH6 buyers may find the pill pretty bitter...
Yeah kinda huge bummer for GH6 owners
Owned GH6 and now G9II. I only missing the cfexpress type B card. It is less expensive than v90 sd card at same capacity and way faster to transfer files.
I just bought again the GH6 at low price, I much prefer the colors and skin tones of the GH6 for video. I can get good skin tones in post on my G9II, but white balance is off and the overall colors are not as pleasing.
I always enjoy your honest straight to the point videos , some how i don't think the gh6 will lay to rest and i really had no interest in getting one but , like fishermen enjoy the challenge , no i don't fish but , i am now finding manual focus enjoyable , its crazy but there are still far more GH2 hacked cinematic well scripted videos filmed the old fashioned way than all these new cameras have made put together , yes there are tones of people showing great focusing videos in exotic places , but they are like adverts one just skips over its almost like look what Ive got videos the addiction to have the latest , its like the music industry , the more the tech improves and it is amazing , the more watered down the music has become in general as its so easy to put down a groove even if you cannot play , i know there are exceptions , i still have Gh5 and i agree phase detect is awesome for you tube content creators in front of a camera , but the reason i found this particular video of yours funny , and not in a nasty way , is that you said the gh6 is more or less finished , saying the G9II is now the best which it may be for some , , so what would be the point of a GH6s Or GH7 with phase Detect , unless it was just for that and a new small pixel count stabilized truly low light version that did not need a fan and that had that great GH6 screen . its just funny how they are taking photo tools away from one camera like the gh5 has , and then adding it to another camera to generate income , you may have covered all that in other videos , but I AM JUST SAYING !! LOL ! , some times less is MORE ! cheers and have a good Christmas ,
PS i still might get a GH6 ha ha and i am more than happy with the old G9 focus with the 16mm 1.4 or Olympus lenses that don't get so affected by the DFD Panasonic jitters in video mode and i use the damping of focus response settings on GH5 for smoother focusing , but yes for sports the G9II is clearly miles better at tracking , BUT 3 LIKE NEW G9 CAMERAS CAN BE BOUGHT FOR THE PRICE OF ONE BRAND NEW G9MK2 WOW !! AT THE MOMENT, now will i go full frame NAH !! too much hassle with heavy lenses but yes them full frames do have a slightly different look but not enough of one for me , cheers , thanks for your excellent video as always . chow
Love the comment! Yeah the GH6 for me really comes down to the body style is why I am using that camera. If I need to use cinema lenses with MFT the GH6 is the camera I am grabbing mostly because of the fans, the tilt up screen, tally lights, and front record button. The future of cameras won’t be how many more specs are in it but the convenience the camera offers. Like those features, better ibis, internal NDs. Most people don’t need $2000 cameras that shoot 8K😂 the last spec I really want is 6k open gate 60fps then I am gonna be a happy man. Besides that all the other specs are about all the same at this point
@@MatthewDangyou Thanks Matthew , very good reply , thank you very much .👍👍👍👍👍
For the GH7, I'm guessing this: BlackMagic RAW internal. Panasonic gave them L-Mount and Blackmagic paid for it by giving Panasonic BRAW. Also,...the G9-II has a very low native ISO in VLog and I'll guess the GH7 will have a 2000 ISO VLog, much higher than the G9-II. Those two features and a cooling fan will be everything the GH7 needs to beat the G9-II for video.
I have the GH6 and it's great but my eyes are not what they were once, so a better AF would be helpful. The flip screen was nice, but it was still to small.
I’m increasingly of the view the GH7 will either have a lower MP sensor or a built in VND. Or both.
I have both, the GH6 has better skin tones and colors, you can match them to a degree but it is not so easy, the GH6 has really a very cinematic look. This is for me the main advantage of the camera.
Would you say that look is still not as good as the S5iiX?
@@ksatiko6218 No, I think both the GH6 and G9II have a nicer look than the S5II(X), they have less moiré, less edge sharpening and better rolling shutter. On the top of that, the GH6 has even better colors and skin tones than the G9II in my opinion.
But the issue I have with the S5II(X) is the internal processing, it is not as good as on the S5 and S1.
However, when using Braw, the S5II(X) has a very nice output.
@@aiseurnae5976 except in low light perhaps? Wouldn't the full frame give S5iiX the edge? See, I'm trying to buy a camera for running and gunning a documentary and I have very good offers for both the gh6 and the S5iiX, but the latter seems a better investment due to the full frame.
Yeah I feel like starting from fresh fullframe is the future investment now unfortunately
@@MatthewDangyou why unfortunately?
Hey Matt, great video, its amazing to see how much this new updates makes the difference. I need your suggestion regarding to buying this camera that I have been planning to get S5iiX due to its phase detect and low light performance for strictly wedding videos but now with this G9ii with new updates, what would you recommend me to buy which one that now I am in the limbo to buy what? Just wanted to confirm that its solely for the wedding video purpose, may be some photos but what would be best bet in my scenario in Toronto. Thanks
For weddings I would easily recommend the S5iiX. Link in bio if you want to support the channel😂😂😂 but on serious note the S5iiX will have better lowlight plus dual native iso at 640 & 4000 is huge for shooting anything in mix lighting scenarios
whens the firmware going to be available ??
The GH6 is better in every way except Auto focus. Out of the box colors and skin tones put it in par with the best out there for me. Blessings
Sadly, not only the AF. The DR, low light performance and IBIS are better on the G9II, but yes the skin tones and colors are much better on the GH6. Very hard choice.
Interesting I will be making a full comparison video with some A/B test between the two cameras so I wonder if most people will know the difference 🤔
@@MatthewDangyou That would be super helpful 🙏
@@MatthewDangyouThis is a great question. I would also ask if the videos that most viewers shoot are for YT or other online viewing, or are these people shooting weddings, commercial work, etc. I find that most work could easily be shot in 1080p because it ends up right here. I look forward to seeing your comparison and thank you for taking the time to post the content! Jim
Don’t worry squad. Been spending last 2 weeks on a GH6 vs G9ii video
All the Lumix G camera's have in camera "Focus Stacking". G9 seems to have it , but not the new G9MKII ? Is it now available with the latest software update ? Did you look at this feature ?
I love videos like this because they will make a number of people sell their GH6 under its true value and I'll be buying it. The only downsides to GH6 are the oversized body and the lack of phase detect AF. But honestly, aren't the GH5, GH5 II, GH5s, G9m1, and now G9m2 oversized too? Yes they are. So at least the GH6 for its size and its AF solution does it exceptionally well. Until I see some studio charts with the G9m2 I'll regard the GH6 as the king of the MFT. Plus the OM1.
They just updated gh6 firmware to 2.5.
Do dual ios Panasonic g9 ii working like gimbal? can I walking and make video without gimbal?
The ibis can be a gimbal like but not replace a gimbal
@@MatthewDangyou thank. Do you have video about OIS?
Hey pal, you have a great channel along many Lumix-lovers content creators. I have to buy a first camera for a documentary to shoot solo, would you suggest a gh6 or a S5iix? Due to lack of discounts, the g9ii is not worth it at the moment in my area.
Honestly future invest into the fullframe to be honest. I feel like fullframe is what will be the future so it would be better to have full frame glass right now more
@@MatthewDangyou thanks mate. And regarding the video quality of the Gh6 and the s5iix? The former seems even better sometimes. But in great light probably.
@ksatiko6218 yeah it honestly will come down the the lens that have the biggest impact on the look of the image. I have an S5iiX VS GH6 video on my channel too
@@MatthewDangyou know it by heart! Hahaha
Gh6 still has the fan the better screen and the better memory card
For sure!
One feature of the GH6 that I wish the G9 II and S5 / 5 II had is Time Code In (via BNC through the flash sync port). Just realizing now how much I could have used it on my last shoot. Oh well, sleep is overrated, anyway ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Yeah if that is a feature that is needed it is great to have! For most people probably don’t use time code on these cameras I feel like haha I could be wrong though
@@MatthewDangyou on the page of DPreview I saw something else that worries me. No true 24p shooting, only 23,98 on the G9 II. Is this true? Because if you want sleepless nights when doing a multicam edit I believe I have hit the jackpot!
I bought the gh6 less than a year ago because it was $1297. I haven't used It one time and at this rate I won't be able to get $1,000 for it used. SMH. Done with Micro 4/3 for sure. S5IIX for me next and no micro 4/3s. Gread vid.
How is it the camera's fault you didn't use it?
GH6 is still a better camera...
I have both. For IBIS and AF no. For DR and low light below ISO 800 no. But for color science, and the ability to use Prores interal of course yes !
Won’t overheat with that fan g9 could well overheat
I agree - it’s still a beast
You do know those that are busy actually shooting, don't bother with this minutia. You can get great shoots from any of these cameras.
So no need for GH6 imho...disoutinued Line in near future....
Hopefully the GH6ii or something will come out to replace it! When I use cinema lenses the GH6 will be my go too still in between these cameras
I don’t know, i’m still stuck with GH5ii..
Gh5ii is sick!
GH5 OG here. Can't wait for a GH6s/7 announcement at upcoming CES, hopefully. I will then buy either this or G9ii if I can't wait. I know all the MF workarounds. But as a solo shooter or even family dad I am sick of the limitations that brings. I Wanna use my AF primes wideopen also in video. In short the GH6 is not an option for me.
