I was originally wanting milk kefir, but upon delivery today, noticed that they were indeed water kefir grains. Thank you for posting this as it was very helpful and potentially avoiding a bad mistake when starting them. Sound like milk kefir is still much better, so will eventually try and get those going...in the interim water kefir will have to do.

    • @chriskeith1980
      @chriskeith1980 Před 2 lety +1

      Some kits come with the things like a strainer to strain the grains from the milk. Grains are sold as dried or live. The dried grains can take many batches to rejuvenate and re-balance the yeast/bacteria. The benefit is they can be stored for a while in the cold section of a grocery store. I bought them once because it was the middle of the summer and the live grains may have arrived dead from being too hot during transit. I prefer getting normal grains shipped if possible. Besides that no big difference. The powder is not the same and does not have as many strands of bacteria and only last a few batches.

"ferments very slowly" .. cant digest the curdled milk or digesting it slowly .. or 2. "viscous like gooey" did the bacteria process the lactose and sugars from the acid and curdled milk and turn it to .. diahrea 😂 or is that "goo" a defense mechanism to protect the bacteria .. orrr if you .. drank that stuff .. and are still alive you might have. PENDING SOME DOCTORS TEST IT.. HELLO.. it might be a new beneficial different kind of bacteria culture..

    Can I use 2% lowfat milk to make Kefir?

    • @robinmcv
      @robinmcv Před rokem

      It's best to use organic whole milk that hasn't been Ultra-Pasteurized for Kefir. The Kefir seeds need whole milk for its food source or you'll get mostly whey produced from it because it ate up all the fats and lactose in the 2%. You can store the milk Kefir seeds in the fridge for a few days in 2% that hasn't been Ultra-Pasteurized. But disgard the milk (not the Kefir seeds) before starting a new Kefir batch or repeat the process for storage. Always look for pasteurized instead of Ultra-Pasteruized milk. Ultra-Pasteruized kills off the good bacteria strains in the milk in ultra high heat. The trick is to keep feeding the Kefir seeds or they will starve and die off.
