I just accepted a long term substitute teaching position and these tips are SUPER helpful! I plan on using the first time especially. It's better to announce things at the beginning of class instead of the end.
And your quote makes sense: "Motion Makes Commotion!!"

Hey Reynolds, great to see your face. So much encouragement flowing out. You know what would be awesome?
SEEING YOU TEACH A LESSON BEGINNING TO END
    Special request!!
A full lesson on any subject.
I just wanna see it travel start to finish. i think you've got the confidence to do it even without the students in front of you. 🙏🌷

100% agree, “stay in your seat and don’t throw anything” free time is so much less chaotic than door time

My husband gets his students to do retrieval practices. He pretends he is the troll in the Billy Goats Gruff or some superhero villain and the class has to answer a short memory recall (like multiplication table/ past tense form of verb) through cold calling. Then he will ‘release’ them from being ‘held hostage’ when time’s up but they thought it’s because they had answered the ‘troll riddles’ correctly.

Thank you so much for all of your videos!! I learn SO MUCH from you! You have such an incredible gift for teaching!
    I have a couple questions.
What do I do about students who REALLY don’t like me? Most students really do like me as a teacher (I really invest in the kids). But there are a few who don’t respect me and don’t do their work/what I ask them to do. Any suggestions?
Also, how do I discipline the really sweet kids? Or the students who have really come to like me? It’s so hard for me to discipline students when they act out a little if they’re super sweet & usually well behaved! I’m too much of a people pleaser anyways and discipline comes hard to me 😩 Thank you!!

I'm by no means Reynolds, and his methods may differ from mine. But I like contributing anyway. =) With sweet kids I calmly say something like, "OK, were not doing that right now," or ill snap my fingers and say, "Over here," or whatever it is. I just work with the relationship. With the most well-behaved I pull them aside or speak quietly close to them about why I can't allow them to do what theyre doing right now (put on headphones, listen to music). I explain the domino effect of if I let them do it, then those who can't handle that level of freedom will get out of control, and so it's just easier to ban it for everyone - or something along those lines.
For problem students, I try to explain the rules and the reasoning for them as well, but I also follow the discipline process as well. I'll write things down, talk to them after class (or in a corner during class when the kids are moderately talking), call their parents, write a minor referral, write a major referral, call an administrator to remove a student immediately. Whatever that process looks like for you, just follow it. Just do it consistently. You can do some of those steps multiple times before moving to the next one, and you can jump to a higher step sooner. Use your best judgment. You're a good teacher.
Also, for problem students, act! Go out of your way to smile at them and share genuine compliments. Act like nothing is wrong in those moments.

Ok brother love your videos they have helped me a lot through my 1st year. But I've got to say beings your talking my field. It is water disbursement and the 40 is because it was the 40th attempt the inventer had made. Another fun one is the W in oil weight like 0W 20 actually stands for Winter rather than weight

    Hey Mr. Reynolds,
I'm a social studies teacher and I constantly struggle with imposter syndrome. Some words I mispronounce, some content I teach poorly or wrong. Have you ever had experiences with this? What would you suggest for teachers that really think they just aren't cut out for it?
