The story is that all the cats are trying to get to heaven because only one of them will get chosen. So, they are all singing about themselves as of saying why they should get to go to heaven. Then the cat who sings “Memory” is supposed to be a prostitute with a heart of gold and she ends up getting chosen. This message comes to you from a special guest professor I had who was in Cats on Broadway so take that as you will.
The fact that none of them mentioned the random spaceship that comes down to pick up Grizabella in the end makes me wonder if I ever even saw Cats, or if it was all just a fever dream.
Well I'd say it was meant to be ascent into a heaven-like place rather than being taken by aliens, I don't think you ever see a ship or anything, but the two have similarities.

Awkwar d my drama teacher in High School had a professional recording of cats on DVD and once she was out sick, and she had the sub make us watch Cats. I got in trouble because I kept leaning over to my friend next to me to ask what the heck was going on.
It's bizarre, yes, but it's honestly genius. It's my favorite musical, mostly because of the text, especially the costumes, but the music is sensational. There is a story behind it, you just have to look deeper.

Cats is a musical with music written by Andrew Lloyd Weber, and most “lyrics” written by T.S. Elliot, even though they were just poem of different types of cats in a book call Old Possums book of practical cats. The rest of the lyrics, such as arguably the best song on broadway, Memory and Memory Reprise, were written by Tim Rice, who seems to be Andrews partner in crime. The musical/movie follows a group off cats who meet up once a year to decide which cat is to be reborn as a kitten. The opening scene describes what a “Jelicile Cat” is supposed to be which then goes into “The naming of the cats” which is a poem describing how each cat has three different names, and how they are used. After this, we start to meet the narrator of the story more, Munkustrap, who is beloved to be related to Tugger and Old Deuteronomy. Then we go into each cat telling there story. It’s starts with JennyAnyDots, who is basically the definition of a fat house cat who plays with the mice instead of eating them and Rum Tum Tugger, Who is not only Weber’s Elvis character, but all the ladies Favorite tom cat who thinks he’s above it all. Then, we get introduced to a cat named Grizabella, who was accually never written in the poems, she was a character Weber made up. Then, they do another song about Jellicles because why not? We then here about Monjojerrie and Rumpelteazer, who are two cats who just can’t stay out of trouble, Old Deuteronomy, who is the oldest and wisest of the cats, the Great Rumpuscat, Who seemed to be like a police cat, Gus, the old theater cat, Bustopher Jones, a fat fancy cat, and Shimbleshank, a railway cat. Then, we fest interrupted by Grizabella trying to make us feel sorry for her again, only to be interrupted by macavity, who likes to mess shit up and he takes Old Deuteronomy. Only them does Tugger introduce Mr. Mistoffeless, Who is a magic cat who brings back old Deuteronomy. Then here’s come Grizabella again, who sings Memory Reprise and this time it accually works and she is chosen to be reborn in the “Heaven”. Sorry this is a long one I just really love this musical and I love that Starkid did this! If I got anything wrong or forgot to add anything, tell me!
I mean you're right, and I love it too. Just performed it at my school actually, but this explanation does very little to help outsiders appreciate it. It is probably the weirdest musical I can think of, but it is great fun!

KitsyX I agree with that! It’s also kind of a concept musical, so technically there isn’t a story so much as there’s an idea to it.
Cats show us a larp in which a number of degenerates compete to decide who has the best backstory. We therefore see a number of attendees backstory.
The degenerates are all people dressed as cats (in some songs people dressed as cats dressed as other animals). The cat theme is used to justify constant foreplay and the sex scene.
The winner is judged to be Elaine Paige becuse she preserved when clearly no one wanted her at the orgy.
The winner then climbs some stairs and is supposed to have a new character for the next meet. (Being a scripted play this doesn't happen nor does the winner change)
