He was nervous bc it's the first time performing in front of this big crowd and he is naturally very shy. So he needs time to get used to being alone on stage and work on his stage presence other than that he is an amazing artist and vocalist. Love him and the performance!

+Jake Sulkin remember that there were 4 other hyper guys doing the engaging and entertaining at the time. he has always been this way, he hasnt had to learn too much stage presence when the others did it basically for him. its a different thing to go up to a stage in front of a big crowd and sing (which he did now) than go up there and perform.

Zayn is a great vocalist but he needs to think of a stage alter-ego that way he can lose his inhibitions which can affect his confidence and the energy into his performance. Michael Jackson repeatedly said he's very shy by nature to the point of going numb around new people, but when he goes on stage he thinks of himself as another person. Zayn needs to do that, he needs to work with his band on what they're going to do; to up his energy.
he litteraly has 10 mins only to perform 3 songs and you come talking about his ego and bullshit he didnt talk shit to the crowd and still he was the most talked about artist

Oohhh god people claim to be his fan and criticise him about his stage presence, just go and read about his anxiety in his book, or where ever you can read it from. And give him time for god sake, he is 23 only. I know there are young artist who have better stage presence them him, but they are not Zayn, ok. Just try encourage him.

to everyone saying the crowd was boring, you cannot hear the crowd as they are muted out on the live broadcast. they do this so you can hear the singers voice instead of fans screaming, it you look at people who recorded it then you would hear the crowd being loud af
omg why it's everybody hating? nobody teaches you to ENJOY music? He is one of the artist from pop music who CAN sing her records live, he it's a singer, if you want to see some circus and playback well hear somebody else, this is good music of this decade... you should enjoy it and chill out
+Larita saying that he lacks stage presence isnt hating. its constructive critisism, which every artist will and should get. he isnt perfect, every artist has flaws, like humans. while justin bieber may not have as good vocals as zayn, he engages with his crowd and puts on a show. good vocals can only take you that far. his stage presence is barely there, he has had 4 other hyper guys do the engaging and entertaining the crowd for him for the past 4 years, hes basically a beginner in the music industry as a solo artist. putting up a great show means keeping the crowd entertained, while good vocals have a lot to do with it, its not everything. adele doesnt put up a huge circus but her shows seem wonderful, she engages with people.
maybe when he gets to do more of his own shows and gets used to being up on the stage alone he will get better, but its not hating when you point out that this was pretty boring to watch. hes naturally more quiet and shy but you have to learn to perform (which is more than just singing) to make the shows enjoyable.

Proud of him, he made it through this with his anxiety issues. His backup singers and band really put a lot into this and part of it I think bc they know of his issue. It probably helped him be more comfortable ♥️

i could tell he's getting anxiety and is very nervous on stage. he said he nearly had a mental breakdown backstage but his friends were able to break him out of it last minute, so he came on stage.

I love Zayn very much and his vocals were awesome but as a true fan, he needs constructive criticism like every other artist does. Every artist have their bad moments with his/her performances. Though he did good, this was my least favorite of his solo career so far. I think he'll get better during his tours (stagewise) , but who knows? He was use to having 4 other dudes doing all the talking for him and singing with him. To be fair to him, the first and last time he sang on stage alone was his X-Factor audition at the age of 17 so I understand why this is hard for him. But now as a solo act and an adult, it's his responsibility to get the resources to have a stage coach, vocal coach, & study other artists [like Drake, Mick Jagger, Eminem, whoever...] to help him accelerate like what other artists do (and yes, every artist does this and still do) but I mostly blame his backing team, especially his manager(s) for being his worst support system while saying and doing nothing but letting him do what he want on stage. Also, I understand he's shy which is fine, but so were MJ, Prince, as well as Beyonce and among others (non dancing artists too) off stage before they perform but unlike Zayn, they were trained. First things first, get rid of the mic-stand for practice & get comfortable because he relies on it too much. He doesn't have to dance but he needs to move back and forth, doesn't matter. I don't normally say this about other modern artists but I strongly believe that Zayn has what it takes to be a legend/icon if he puts his work into it, no doubts (which I'm sure he can do) but he's better than this & someone (especially his FANS) needs to tell him (THE TRUTH) right now and tell him all of this now before it gets worst. I know his backing team won't & he's to "busy" not listening to his fans so... 😕😕 DON'T KILL ME! Just discuss below what you think!

His backup team and his manager isn't boosting his confidence enough by providing him some good advice based on his performances and that isn't fair for Zayn because folks already look down on him because of it. If his team and manager really care about Zayn, they need to let him know because he's growing new fans and gaining popularity everyday with his music and would want to eventually see him live in concerts or TV performances and they cannot let him go through losing fans if he doesn't improve. I'm saying all of this because I care but there are fans who will support him through all of this mistakes, no matter what and that's not a good look for him.
exactly, like we all know the other 4 in one direction made the whole show enjoyable they were funny and care about interacting with the fans while he was singing and now that he´s alone he´s doing the same but without the support of liam, harry, niall and louis is kinda obvious he's shy and doesn't know what to do, yeah he has the most incredible voice but we all know he needs to work on every other aspect :)

His stage presence is fine. His songs are just really mellow. We're so used to poppy songs that are hyped and get stuck in your head that zayns music is a bit left field. It's his taste of music which no one can really do much about

It's really the stage presence that he needs to work on. He's already got the hard part down which is the most important which is the voice. Once he's literally perform like 2 or 3 times so give him some time. You will see a massive difference from this performance to future performances.

Not really. I would say his stage presence started to degrade in 2013. If you look at 2010-2012, you can see the amount of energy he brought to the stage and would sometimes overshadow the other four members. And you have to remember that he had 4 other people with him, so in his mind, he thought he didn't have to do much in terms of performing and would just stand and to minimal movement while the other 4 would jumping and dancing like crazy. Now that he is solo, all eyes on him, so I think nerves play a role in terms of the way he performs and how he engages with the audience. So all I can say is,give him some time. I'm not saying he will completely change in a few performances, but I'm saying you will see changes with each performance he give, and that to me is an exciting thing to see within an artist. You have to remember Zayn is very reserved and quiet, so him breaking out of that shell will take some time. I have faith he will become way better of a performer in a couple month to the way performed recently.
illusionfication my point exactly. he is shy and while the other 4 werent shy on stage he got off easy bc he didnt have to do anything since the others did it for him. now that you mention it, i can agree that his stage presence was a bit better in the beginning, but i wouldnt say it was near as good as the others. imo he was always the worst at it, no shame in that.
but still, he wasnt able to bring the stage presence up with the group (youd think it wouldve been easier when others were there with you on stage and he wouldnt feel so shy then, cause im sure he was aware of how he was on stage) so it will most likely be even harder to do it on his own.
it will take time. like i said, 2 or 3 shows wont do anything unless he takes a complete 180. my point was that he needs quite a lot more time than a few shows, like you said, to get his shows going stage presence wise. (granted that when he does his own shows and the crowd is only his fans he might feel more comfortable, hopefully)
