    If you are still having trouble matching the seams try the three pin trick. Sink a pin through the seams matching the intersection but don't turn that pin to put the two layers together. Put pins on each side of the matched pin. Another trick for those who are aiming for perfection. Lengthen your machine stitch to basting length and baste each intersection. You can then open the seam and see if its to your liking. If not it's easy to pull the long stitches and do over. When all is to your liking shorten the machine stitch length and sew.

    Thank you for this tutorial! I started a big Lone Star quilt a couple of years ago.... I just couldn't get the centre to line up properly. When I pulled it out last week I could see that the centre was of about 1/2 inch... but ya know what, now I'm ok with that! lol Its a busy pattern and ya really can't tell.... well unless you get up close. This video has inspired me to get it done and enjoy it! Hugs from Ontario, Canada

      Great news - done is always better than perfect ;-) And if you can't see it from a galloping horse, it doesn't exist in my book!!

    Amanda, this is a beautiful project. I love 45 degree diamonds. I don't mind Y seams as I make them X seams through my method. For those wanting to make this into a baby quilt, put the project on point and attach corners. It looks particularly fetching in adding a border or a flange between the star and the corners. It's a good way to get 44% more real estate without the work. I've been using 3" strip sets of 2 (feature and solid). I get a 33" ish baby quilt. Fun and easy to make. And this 2 strip method uses 1 fat quarter. A great way to get rid of fat quarters and pairing them with a solid that sets of the feature fabric.

    Thanks so much, I really enjoyed watching your Lone Star Quilt Block Tutorial. I has alot of good information and helpful tips. I am inspired to try one of my own. However I searched for the Downloadable Coloring Sheet you mention during the tutorial but was unable to find it. Could you please share that with me or let me know about where I should look for it? Thanks again, Cathy

    Would you be able to use the large 60 degree diamond ruler to accomplish the same design as you used with the ruler at 45 degrees?

    • @MaterialGirlQuilts
      @MaterialGirlQuilts  Před 3 lety +1

      That ruler would not work. You need a ruler with a 45 degree line to get the correct angle for these diamonds.

    • @MaterialGirlQuilts
      @MaterialGirlQuilts  Před 3 lety

      I'm not sure if it would work. The pattern calls for 9 different 2 1/2" x WOF strips. Technically you can get more than enough smaller strips out of a fat quarter to equal a 2 1/2" x WOF strip, but I'm not sure how many diamonds you could get cut from each smaller strip. Sorry I'm not more help!

  • @gaillewis3324
    @gaillewis3324 Před 2 lety

    If you make your strips 4 strips wide will that work

    • @MaterialGirlQuilts
      @MaterialGirlQuilts  Před 2 lety

      Hi Gail, the Lone Star Block is pretty easily adjustable and you can increase the amount of strips or "diamonds" in each row that you cut. Hope this helps!

    Can you make the star larger?

    • @notesfromleisa-land
      @notesfromleisa-land Před 2 měsíci +1

      You can make the stars larger. You can increase the number of strips OR you can increase the size of the strips or both depending on how large you want your star to be.

    This is a great tutorial, but I wonder if anyone else is having this issue: My 8 diamonds look amazing however when I attach the background triangles lining up the points as shown in the video, the finished "airplane" seams are all off once sewn and pressed. I wish I could share a pic. In order to assemble everything, I'm either going to have to trim the diamonds or make that part of the seam much wider (about 1/2") than the background (1/4"). UPDATE: I think a better instruction would be to NOT line up the points as shown but to extend the background triangle about 1/4" beyond the diamond to allow for the seams, so that after sewing, the long edges are a nice continuous line. (I hope that made sense).
