Drove a 10 speed pulling triaxles thru the Canadian Rockies . Weights up above 100,000lbs. When you went from a 6% to a 8% grade you needed to to drop from 6th to 5th. That was a butt clincher. Got lucky and never missed one, but lots of guys did and their crawling up the mtn in 1st or bull low while a bunch of idiots getting impatient that were hauling light and forgetting about the time they messed up screaming on the CB. 13 speed cured that problem.

Did the same with an old 4300 Transtar with Reyco suspension, 4th to 1st on a 13 speed, only one could make a hill, the rest of 5 semis had to dump their asphalt on the ground and feed the spreader with a backhoe, oh the memories!

I used to run crushed glass with a daycab freight liner Columbia and a pull behind roll off trailer. 475cat with a 10 speed. I live in PA and there isn’t anywhere I went that didn’t have a long 6-8% grade pull of over a mile, especially running route 42 over the coal hills to get to interstate 80. One hill was a “don’t miss a down shift hill” purely because if you miss a shift, you either ruin the truck or have to go the rest of the way up in creeper gear. I’d be doing 32 mph with her screaming at 1700rpm and the fan switch ON. kitty would just pull and pull.

As a fellow driver that hill is a killer. You can cowboy up it but there stands a good chance of a busted driveline in the process. Take it easy and just take the push isn't as cool but the truck will live.

Used to hunt near Quitman @ Greasy Creek. There's a hill over there that makes this one look like chump change. Between the soap stone and red clay, it was a beast of a hill. Bumpy as heck - you needed speed to make it but you were gonna bounce around. One guy was 6'2" and after going up that hill, he was forever more... 5'9". We called him 'no neck' Lol

I know this is an older vid, but in my f550 I put a pusher fan infront of the intercooler, and when I went wide open it turned it on for 4 minutes (just a switch under the pedal and a little 12v timer switch, also had a constant on switch) eventually I got a bigger intercooler and didn't have the problem anymore.

Red pete, great job on that hill especially the shifting I been in similar circumstances and to get that skip shift just right takes skill, a skill these new automatics just dont have I'll never own one you'd never make it unassisted up that hill in a 2020 cascadia darn truck would go limp as a boned fish just lookin at that hill 😂😂
