- I have Vitiligo. This means my immune system attacks the cells responsible for producing skin pigment. I have both pigmented and un-pigmented skin all over my body and this gives me a unique, spotty appearance. I would like to speak to this issue as it affects the Vitiligo community - many people with this condition experience significant stigma, psychological stress and social rejection. It feels important to both increase others‚ awareness and understanding of this condition while challenging all of us to consider how we relate to our own, and others, visible and invisible differences with empathy, care and compassionate curiosity.
Megan Relin is a clinical social worker who works with people on body acceptance and healing from trauma and eating disorders. She has been living with vitiligo for 20 years and tonight she will be sharing some of the lessons she’s learned due to having a visible difference. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx
I have it since high school.
My ex left me because of it. After that, I thought I was not worth love. Years after, I met and married a nice and beautiful girl.
What I want to say is, let those people who can't accept vitiligo leave. The one who loves the true you will stay and stay forever.

I felt I wouldnt find anybody who loves me ....I always felt I was a burden ...I still feel it sometime....But eventually it's you who are there for u till the end ...My parents and my bf are being supportive about it. ....I m blessed ....
Usually when I see videos about vitiligo it has more people of color so as someone who is white with vitiligo it's nice to see someone similar.

@@crystalblessing5608 my condition is genetic so medication can't fully fix it but I also don't really mind having vitiligo for personal reasons but when I look up anything about vitiligo videos are either about the condition, how to fix it, or people( usually of color) talking about having it so it's nice to see some representation.

Oh good grief I'm crying. All bodies are good bodies. I've never felt that mine is good but hearing you say that out loud just hit me.
I was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease at 19, Vitiligo at 27 and shortly after that, Alopecia Areata. They all kinda devastated me in their own way but I've fought so hard to not allow it to impact my life. I think you've honestly made me realise I should have had therapy. I walked away from the Doctor feeling like I'd been kicked in the stomach. No help, no advice, just a diagnosis.

Our story is opposite. I am brown, I got vitiligo at 12. My family was poor growing up. The perfect amount of poor, we didn’t have enough money for insurance, but made slightly to much for Medicaid (free state insurance). Lil kid came up and asked why I got mayo on my elbows so I told him I got sun burned and to go put sunscreen on lmao
I'm not really sure why but this video kind of made me mad. I had vitiligo as a child and grew up with it. I eventually turned completely white (which, I was offered the opportunity to do by a dermatologist years prior).
Never mentioned was the danger that the sun causes to skin that has no melanin, never mentioned was the years of growing up with it, never mentioned was the real mental impact it has on a person over the decades. Never mentioned was the extreme need for a high percentage of sunscreen in ALL types of weather year round. As I sit here letting my self tanner dry and looking at myself several shades darker and feeling like I look ridiculous, I think that this speaker has little idea how much of an impact vitiligo has on someone's life, she has started her journey later in life, she escaped many monumental moments in her life when it could of really caused mental scars.
I do however, wish her well and, if she has one more baby, she may turn completely white too, that's whar happened to me and believe it or not, I was happy.

It’s also very difficult to go through childhood with pigment and then almost overnight have white patches you didn’t have a lifetime to get “used to”.

My vitiligo showed up in elementary school, I went through years of kids teasing me, asking me if it was leprosy and other embarrassing comments.
Getting it later in life could only be easier but thanks for coming out and commenting on a three year old comment because you have nothing else to do.

I developed stress vitiligo in March of 2014 at the age of 48 yrs. as I was fighting to save a marriage that failed never-the- less. It first appeared on my neck as a white spot, the size of nickel on its side. By the time I was 49 yrs., vitiligo had taken over my neck, chest, and one shoulder. I was greatly depressed, I felt that my appearance was revealing my imperfections and so I hid who I had always been especially since divorce made me feel like a failure. I didn’t know who I was anymore. It took one person to say, “I’ve noticed the vitiligo but not really, I am more attracted to who you are as a person”. Needless to say, he encouraged my soul and won my heart. Today, September of 2024, I will be embracing 58 yrs. soon, I am happily married to my best friend who sees me, not just my spots. Do I think about my vitiligo…YUP, I’d be a liar if I said ‘NO’. But it’s how I think of vitiligo that has changed. I can walk around my house with no make up on, take my dogs for a walk and even go to the grocery store or post office and not feel like everyone is looking at my vitiligo. To all those struggling with vitiligo-brain-fog, change your mindset, not who you are and know that there are INDEED great days to be had ‘even with vitiligo’. Thank you for this platform to tell some of my story and hopefully encourage someone else.

A very cheap herb called puncture vine or terrestris tribulus is quite helpful. I buy some raw seed-fruits and pulverize it in a high speed blender into a powder and the quarter teaspoon 2 or 3 times a day. It also raises energy levels. If you take a little more, it is okay and it strengthens the organ functions and general health of the body. I am not giving health advice and I am not a doctor, but it seems to help quite a bit.
I just tell people ima calico haha. The emotional distress when i was younger was difficult to cope with but now i have thick skin (lol) and am not bothered by looks and questions. Own it. Love yourself

I was diagnosed in 2nd grade, my family’s Lebanese so we can get pretty dark if we stay in the sun, but also we can be pale if we stay indoors so my vitiligo isn’t too noticeable now after years of avoiding the sun as much as I can.

I knew it was going to be a problem when I finished launch with a friend and he said you have something at the side of on mouth, my first reaction was that it was just food. But it wasn't. It's not that visible in white skin unlike dark skin
Um...yes it is, I am Caucasian Scottish with relatively light skin, and I can see big white patches rn, it is visible trust me, people comment on it. Obviously the contrast is greater in dark skin but it is VERY VISIBLE on some white people, do you have the condition or have you just came across white people whose vitiligo you deem 'not that visible'? You are aware that us white people aren't a uniform colour right? it's kind of a spectrum 😱😂

You should get treated! I started noticing snail white patched 10 years ago and is developing until now :( I regret not having gone to the doctor earlier …
There is no telling when it will spread or how much it will spread but one thing is for sure, whenever you start stressing about it vitiligo seems to spread faster.
Don’t stress yourself because it makes it spread quicker. When I first got it, it was a very small spot it took one year to start growing now it has spread to some other parts of my body but it is not the same for everyone.
No pain except severe sun burn. I know I'm also cursed.

Not really, unless we get tan or directly mention it. There are people who say that white people can’t have it so, it’s not as bad for us though
Since I work outside in the summer, it's definitely more visible then, not to mention the stark difference in arm hair color. I also have a white patch of hair because of it on the back of my head. I've had people point at my arms, laugh behind my back at my hair, customers seemingly refuse to take change because I touched it, or otherwise have had people make rude comments loud enough for me to hear sometimes. But honestly, it depends on the person how much it affects them.
I am also cursed. Vitiligo is a disability a handicap?? Am I wrong ?
