    • @ampac
      @ampac Před 2 lety

      @@merlost1624 It is impossible to keep near zero TDS in a planted tank because such tank needs fertilizers, which will increase TDS/EC. What you can have is a planted tank with zero KH and very low GH. But the GH cannot be zero because calcium and magnesium are essential micro-nutrients for the plants. So, you can skip the carbonates, but you cannot skip a small amount of calcium and magnesium. Most plants will actually thrive in low GH and KH environments. Only hard water plants would struggle, but those are a minority in the hobby. If the tank will have livestock then this a different discussion because GH is essential for many species (such as shrimp). There were other very interesting experiments in MJ's list... but this is not one of them ;-)

    • @ampac
      @ampac Před 2 lety

      @@MJAquascaping The TDS is always > 0 because of the fertilisers. Keeping the KH/Alkalinity (carbonates) at zero is not a problem for most plants and livestock. But you will always need to add calcium and magnesium (GH) since these are essential micro-nutrients for the plants and most livestock also needs GH > 0. But for the plants you have in your tanks and the neocaridina, you can keep the KH at near 0 and a GH of ~5. If you do not plan to add any livestock, you could keep the GH around 1... it would work for most plants.

    There are four distinct phases of pregnancy in Neocaridina shrimp. the first being that a female shrimp has eggs in her ovaries, also known as a "saddle". The second stage being the movement of the eggs from her ovaries and out of her body. Only to be carefully held onto by her rear legs, and allowed to hang below her belly, also known as "berried" (referred to as they resemble small berries. Here Cherry Shrimp are ready to have a male fertilize their brood.
    Third, she is fertilized and the eggs are a bright yellow or green color and she constantly moves them around to keep oxygen and nutrients supplied to the Unborn shrimp, as well as cleaning off bacteria and fungi. Lastly she will hatch her shrimp-lets and release them onto their own Into the Wild as miniature versions of herself.

    I use a 1/2" (13mm) siphon hose to cull my shrimp when I do a water change. I just use my finger over the lower end to stop the flow while I move the hose into place, then I uncover it to sick them up. It's much easier than a net. You have to sneak up behind the bigger ones so they can't escape the flow, but you get the hang of it very quickly.

    • @ampac
      @ampac Před 2 lety

      If you have red cherry or sakura neocaridina then you might offspring that are orange, but it is not possible to have yellow. The yellow neocaridina variety is not derived from the red line or sakura line - this is why yellow and red varieties should not crossbreed. Even if you had a bloody mary (which is also red although it not a red variety shrimp but part of the shoko shrimp line), you could not have any yellow shrimp coming out of this line. Most likely, it is just temporary pigmentation and the colour will return to a reddish tone later.

      @ampac Před 2 lety +1

      The yellow golden back line and other "high grade" varieties are the result of an extreme selection process. They are quite far from the wild type neocaridina. This means they are not as genetically diverse as the other lines that are genetically closer to the wild types (such as the sakura, shoko, white, ...) As a result, these high-grade lines are often more sensitive and therefore harder to breed.
