"The Solitary Rambler" is my series of amateur films of my journeys in the countryside accompanied by my own musical scores, which I compose and perform on my Yamaha keyboard.
Please note that, as with all the films I make, this is not actually intended to be an extensive guide to the area. This is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I often share some of my own personal stories.
If you are new to my channel, I strongly recommend reading the description under the “about” tab, which will provide a clearer understanding of what to expect in my films: / solitaryrambler
There is also a short “Introduction to the Solitary Rambler” video, which briefly explains what my films are all about: / solitaryrambler

From start to finish I loved this. Atmospheric with the fog, nice but glad sun came out for you. Beautiful church, amazing castle & gardens. Thanks Patrick 👍😀
Thanks for watching and commenting Lesley. Yes it turned out a nice day of filming despite the fog. Have a great weekend 👍
Thank you for another walk with the frost and ice and Bolsover castle it stands so proud on the top of the hill. Looking forward to your next walk. take care all the best Dave & Jean.
Thanks for watching Dave and Jean. it was indeed a frosty one from what I recall. Have a great weekend 👍
Bolsover Castle looks good place to have a walk round , another magical tour Patrick fantastic !!
The castle was magnificent, but I would love to win the Euro Lottery and restore Sutton Scarsdale Hall to its former glory. I think it's sad that such places are left to rot like that Patrick. It is such a shame. A beautiful walk, too. You definitely got muddy, that's for sure, but a glorious day for it in the end. I really enjoyed this video Patrick, thanks for sharing.
Both buildings are great aren't they? It is a shame about Sutton Scarsdale Hall. Great that it's managed by English Heritage, but I guess there's not much they can do with such a massive empty shell, aside from preventing it disintegrating further. It did get muddy once the frost thawed, but it was indeed a glorious day. Glad you enjoyed it Chris, thanks for watching as always 👍
Thank you so much for this, and for the links! I’m so glad you enjoyed your walk. 😊
You are welcome, thank you for writing the walks 👍😊
Another superb history walk. I’ve been to Bolsover Castle many years ago. It was great to refresh my memory of the place and facts about its past. Thank you for sharing it.
Glad you enjoyed it Kathryn. Bolsover Castle is a great place. Thanks for watching 👍

Another lovely video. Very informative and love all the music! You're very talented! Thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks Fiona. It's what makes the film making so enjoyable for me, not just filming the walk itself, but all the editing afterwards and creating the music. Thanks for watching 👍
That looked a grand fresh morning for a walk Patrick 🤠👍
Some beautiful views and a fabulous finally in Bolsover Castle (wow what a place ) perched high above the town.
As Always a great film 🙏🏼
Very best regards Simon 🤠👍
Morning Simon, it sure was a grand crisp day 😊 Not a bad place Bolsover Castle eh, seen clearly on the hill when you drive up the M1. Thanks as always for watching and commenting Simon, all the best to you 👍
Really interesting walk, Patrick! Nice frosty day for it, some great looking nature reserves, an impressive ruined hall, and then Bolsover castle and its views made an excellent finale! Nice one👍 All the best and take care👍😊
Morning Des, glad you enjoyed it! 😊 It was certainly a frosty one. Sutton Scarsdale is great albeit mainly an empty shell, but Bolsover Castle is a wonderful place to visit, lots to see inside. Thanks for watching and all the best! 👍
A lovely Sunny and crisp day Patrick perfect for a good walk, some great scenery too thankyou for this 🙂
Nice one Steph, thanks for watching 👍
That was a lovely video as usual Patrick, you’ve inspired me to do this walk now thankyou 😊
Thanks for watching Della, hope you do the walk 👍
A lovely film with picturesque views Patrick. I have heard of Bolster but not sure if visited. It looked a very frosty day for you, but you looked very warm in your jacket. (Glad it's warmer now). Interesting tour around Bolster Castle certainly immense. Some pleasant shots. Very nice guitar strumming music with dramatic build ups.
Thanks Shanita, Bolsover Castle is visible when driving up the M1. It was indeed a frosty day and that jacket was invaluable. Certainly glad the weather is warmer now. Thanks for your comments on the music too 👍
Great video and cracking walk, if you extend to about 14 miles you can take in Hardwick Hall too. It's called the 3 houses walk.
Thanks for watching and commenting. I've covered Hardwick in another recent film 👍
Hello Patrick , nice to see you again lovely walk really enjoyed the the views and the castle , great shot of the M1 I have only been on it once :) Thanks Patrick have a great weekend.
Thanks as always for watching and commenting Shaun. Hope your weekend is going well too 👍

Thanks Paul, no beast unless you include me 😂😂😂

You looked back to your best form with this Patrick. It was like the old days of your film making I thought. Well done. It reminded me of the Haddon hall video too .
Thanks for the compliments David. Funny how some filming days work better than others really, never quite sure why 😊 Glad you enjoyed it, thanks for watching 👍
Great to see you still going Patrick , im slowly catching up on your vids . Keep up the good work .👍
Thanks for stopping by gazzer, pleased you're still enjoying the vids 👍
We often venture that way for a walk between Bolsover and Glapwell via Palterton...a lovely area.
Not far from you I guess Steve, thanks for watching 👍
Always wondered what the large empty Hall was opposite Bolsover ..really interesting walk. Thank you :o)
Glad you found it interesting, thanks for watching 👍
I had often wondered what Bolsover Castle was like when seeing it in the distance while travelling. Good to see it close up. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed the tour of the castle, thanks Michael for watching 👍
This was a dramatic walk! The beauty of the frost in the sun and the ruins of the castle and Scarsdale Hall… such a shame the hall fell into disrepair - it would have been magnificent
Thanks Steph, it was a lovely day of filming with the frost and the sunshine. It is a shame about the hall, but good that English Heritage manage it now to stop it deteriorating further 👍
That was a lovely presentation as usual. The crisp, clear blue sky & the scenes with the mist were most pleasing to the eye. Your appreciation of historic landmarks does not go unnoticed. It is amazing to see how talented the architects were all those years ago. The scenes of and inside the castle were a joy to behold. Have a great week ! A. 😍
Cheers Angus, and thanks for the coffee again! Glad you liked this presentation, hope you have a great week too 👍
What a gloriously sunny day. Loved the foggy walk across the field with the sunlit castle over your shoulder. And what a view from the castle! Great shots. Thanks for sharing your walk, I really enjoyed it.
Glad you enjoyed the walk Peter, it was indeed a great day's filming with the sun, the fog and the frost. Thanks for watching 👍
Another impressive winter walk, Patrick. The row of 17th century shops in the town of Bolsover are amazing. The ruins Sutton Scarsdale Hall I'd never heard of before, looks a picture too. I never realised that Bolsover Castle and it's associated buildings are so quite extensive. Very enjoyable together with the surrounding countryside being focussed as well. Many thanks for this showing.
Thanks for watching Ffranc. Bolsover town centre has some fine old buildings. Sutton Scarsdale isn't too well known outside of Derbyshire really, but it's worth seeing despite being so derelict. Bolsover Castle is very extensive, so much so I couldn't include all of it in this film. Glad you enjoyed it, all the best 👍
Great walk Patrick nice sunny day !! but hey where's the pub ??? ha
Sunny and frosty day Russ, plenty of pubs in Bolsover, too early whilst I was there though 😊👍
Hi Patrick. I have just enjiyed watching your latest video. What a great time to go and see Bolsover Castle when it's not far off closing time. It looked very cold . A very good walk . Have a great weekend and looking forward to your next walk. 😊👍
Thanks for watching Cath. I was really pushing it by leaving the visit to the castle at the end due to time, but I managed it and it certainly was a great time to get inside. Hope you have a great weekend too 👍
@@solitaryramblerThanks so much. Glad you got to film it Patrick well worth seeing. See you on the next one. 👍🙂
Patrick, fantastic castle, should of gone there when I was in chesterfield, but Matlock was fantastic, then I made it in the evening to have pint at the old Jerusalem in Nottingham, thanks again for the suggestions, doing the duck in Chicago again, did you see the riot in Chicago last weekend, made world news
The castle is definitely worth visiting Steven. Glad you went to the Old Jerusalem, I've only ever been there myself the once. Thanks for watching and commenting. Not seen that news I'm afraid 👍
Great to be on new ways Patrick and old ones especially on lovely crisp mornings. Ha, from lakes to lanes - it's turning out to be a trail of contrasts. I mean Scarsdale Hall to - but why did these people bankrupt themselves? What a loss to the family. I presume they had some of them views Patrick. Wow, the castle? That's an awesome abode - he sure got the views and felt like King to. Well, a wonderful walk. All the best as always. Mark
It was great to be out on this crisp morning Mark and definitely a trail of variety. It's a real mystery how these wealthy folk end up losing everything and have to sell such great places. Sutton Scarsdale Hall is managed by English Heritage, but it's been an empty shell for such a long time now, a real shame. Great views from it though, and from Bolsover Castle, both looking over each other. Glad you enjoyed this walk Mark, thanks for watching. All the best to you too 👍
@@solitaryrambler I can see and hear it in you Patrick - good vibes. Yeah, economics shift don't they and some don't adapt. And hey presto they're left with estates they can't afford. But wow a decent shell with views. Take care bro. Peace.
Yeah that old shell is still something in itself isn't it Mark. At least English Heritage should help stop it deteriorating any further. Thank care down there too Mark 👍
@@solitaryrambler It sure is a goo ruin Patrick. Stimulated the imagination. Yeah, it'll be there a while now.
Amazing as ever Patrick. Never been to Bolsover town so must visit next time Were in the area and Bolsover castle, which I am sure I have seen from the main road en route to Chesterfield is certainly going on my hit list! That ruined mansion looks incredible, what is to happen to it? Thanks for another fabulous video.
Thanks again Jeff. Bolsover Castle is great, you can see it from the M1 perched on the hill. Sutton Scarsdale Hall is managed by English Heritage, so at least they'll help stop it deteroriating further I guess 👍
Something cosy about sitting here now the weather has improved watching your video with the frost, some wonderful scenes in the mist.
Visited Bolsover Castle a few years ago, interesting history.
Also like the period music you have written, is it a harpsichord?
Morning Steve, thanks for taking the time to watch. Bolsover Castle is a great place indeed. Nice to look back on this now knowing we have warmer weather 😊 Glad you liked the music, it was indeed a harpsichord voice I used for the main part 👍
Alittle doer upper. nice.
👍
Isn't New Bolsover Carr vale 🤔
Don't nitpick please Andrew, just Google it and you'll see 👍
