Turning back the clock and having a look at some earlier material creates a great deal of perspective as we get compare and contrast Michael's approach throughout his career.
He was so incredibly accomplished, confident and musical at such a young age... It's fun to hear how the same tendencies and techniques that got their start in the "Off The Wall" era took on different flavors as he got older.
We hear beatboxing, all sorts of rhythmic breathing and 'dancing with the voice' in these multitracks, but there is a rawness and kid-like freshness to what he's doing here.
Join me for 48 tracks of multitrack goodness as we get to hear horns, keys, all sorts of percussion, and of course... The diverse layering, adlibs and performances of Michael himself.
You must go back to the source to hear all the incredible detail and that's exactly what we get to do!

And to think Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Michael Jackson at 86 out of the 200 best singers of all time. Granted, there are many great vocalists out there, but Michael is criminally overlooked when it comes to his vocal ability. These breakdown videos confirm that.
And completely left Celine Dion the Canadian-French powerhouse off the list, smh
That list was nonsense. I love Aaliyah but there's no way she's #40 greatest ever and MJ is #86 lmao. Especially when R Kelly and Missy Elliott wrote most of her material as well.
I'm not surprised because the majority media in the US/UK have never been kind to Michael since the 90s. They'll take any chance to undermine his talent to the point inviting the mass to bully him. You'll see media campaign to name current artists that they're believe have surpassed him in anything but you'll never see they name some artists to surpass other popular names like Beatles or Elvis. So it's best to not take them seriously. Poeple who listen to Michael with clear heart and mind will surely appreciate his vocal.
@@MD-px4tgholy shit i forgot about that
Just disgusting 😤👊🏽🌟💖🖤🎯🎶🎩 MJ deserves better!!!
Great musicians make their instrument sound like a human voice. Great singers make their voices sound like a musical instrument.
Both are musicians.
Bonerici, great comment.
This is why Michael Jackson is the king of Pop, He is a very hard working guy ❤❤❤.
You say "since the beginning" but remember at his 21, he already had 16 years of experience as a professional singer.
damn
With you Michael on stage since 5 years old.
Michael was one of the few artists that was able to transition from head resonance to chest resonance in a seamless fashion without you being able to gauge where he is because of something he had to do when his voice changed between 1973 and 75.. between those years he had to utilize what is called a vocal hiccup in order to reach some of the written composition ranges of the Motown pop writers at the time. There was some time that he had to spend with artists like Stevie Wonder to learn the mechanics of how his new voice should be and that is evident in songs that was not released. one Stevie Wonder wrote and actually played on was called" buttercup" it was song by The Jacksons and Michael sang Lead but you can clearly hear this is the beginning of when he learned how to change from head resonance to chest residence because of the way he needed to sing the songs for motown.. I think 1976 is when the Jackson signed to the Philadelphia sound and that really allowed him to be a vocal acrobat with his reincarnated voice and being the predecessor to the voice that finally bloomed into what was "off the wall", which I think was his best singing performances out of all of his albums!!. Michael was a mixture of all artists rolled into one because you can hear the grunt that Stevie Wonder may showed him how to eventually perfect and incorporate that into what will become his own singing voice!!..
Thumbs up!
What do you think of Michaels vocals throughout the 90s?
Yeah his vocals were godly in Off The Wall. He sounded pretty much the same on every track throughout Thriller besides the rasp on Beat It. I think some of his more signature sound was developed in Bad and Dangerous but Off The Wall was definitely his vocals at their best.
@@Prospect_He changed his sound completely to compensate for his changing voice, still top tier though and proves why he’s one of the best there ever was.
14:14 Yo! That's MJ's natural chest voice! Holy Hell, that's high! THIS is what I point to when the press try to crown the next Michael Jackson or the next King of Pop. Can they do THIS?
Ya, so incredible!
Not taking anything from MJ, but singing high is just singing high. It's not good or bad. Same for men who sing bass. It's amazing to hear, but it's good for some songs and bad for others.
Off the wall what an incredible album
Ohhhh Off the Wall one of my favorites!
"...and he becomes a guitar at the very end with his voice...." 😂
Absolutely love these MJ listening sessions. Would love to hear Man In The Mirror if possible as it’s one of the jewels in the crown of Michael’s catalogue when it comes to the musicianship on show throughout. Love the perspectives given from a talented musician such as yourself aswell 🙌🙏
#86 MY ASS! MJ IS THEE GREATEST VOCALIST OF ALL TIME! His technique is profound and his vocals the way he conveys them it’s just so powerful and naturally graceful without sounding hella technical unlike artist nowadays MJ was DIFFERENT!!!! Long Live The King Of Music Forever!👑🌟🌟🌟
You want more views and attention? Rank MJ ridiculously low on your list. Which only proves how it's still MJs name that really sells...
Prince was a better singer
What a joke@@fatimadarwish-gv2er
Very well put together spot on
You should do MJ's "Give In To Me" from the Dangerous album. It's a complete gem that got slept on, and his dynamics are so emotive.
MAN I LOVE THAT SONG! I DEFINITELY DIDN'T SLEEP ON THAT SONG!

I’ve have been begging for this!
This is yet another MJ song that makes me uncontrollably move my body, simply can't sit still and I love that!
YES
YESSSS ME TOO IT IS IMPOSSIBLE TO BE STILL WHEN THAT SONG IS ON!
YES!!
This is the one I have been waiting for. That breathy opening, the clicks, the snaps. It was the tightest song of its time. a plus it sounds like he had a ball making that song. You could hear the freedom he had just gain as a solo artist. The ending is where you really hear his joy, his happiness in Hahhha, Hoooo, Hahhha, take it over! You can just see him dancing while sing, smiling and loving it. This is the one song I always go back to when I want to hear him happy and free.
YESSS!
I always felt that way about ORW! You’re hear he’s excited about his freedom. On Thriller he was out for blood. He had a point to prove.
i always get that euphoric feeling from this track too and you just perfectly described why. This song, Don't Stop TYGE and Startin' Something are the three tracks where MJ'S joy and happiness is most evident. I hope there's footage of him recording the vocals, some studio behind the scenes clips from the Dangerous era just leaked recently so who knows, maybe it's out there?
I’ve been waiting on this one also … the horns are possibly the best ever recorded
This is awesome. Have you listened to the home demo of this song? It's really stripped down like an unplugged version. Janet is helping sing background and one of his brothers is helping with some of the instruments. And Michael doesn't even have all the words ready. He just adlibs uses runs. A lot of improv lol. It's so cool.
Oh that would be fun to hear!!
I would love if you broke down some demos too. His "Give into me Demo is incredible! Almost better than the final version
1. Off the Wall is my favorite Mike album.
2. Though I was only born one month before this release, hearing these sessions makes me feel like I was there at Westlake.
Great album to skate to as well!
My favorite album too
MJ is Genius!!!
His “ah-ah” is for sure his way of keeping time and also gaining momentum before the next line especially transitioning from chorus to next verse. Absolutely brilliant
Watching Chris just trip out on these MJ vocals is just great. Like I said on previous videos i really thought I was the only one in the world taking a liking to learn about technical vocals and dissecting the cause I have these vocals too. But to see Chris. Love it. He's had videos and also he's teachings. They do work and help. Chris Is legit
Thanks so much for continuing to engage with me! This is what makes it fun!! ...Well that and the amazing music!!
Nope u are not alone i promise
Agreed. As s sax player I try to vocalize and tell s story ....MJ was the master at this...
I always love these! My favorite song of all time is "Who is it" by Michael Jackson so it would be amazing if you could do that one at some point, Chris! Thanks for your hard work!
I've asked and asked and looked and looked for "Who Is It". Because it wasn't part of the Cirque du Soleil track lineup, those multitracks are not available. Most of these multitracks floating around for MJ find their roots in that batch of songs.
@@chrisliepe Wow, thanks so much for the response, Chris! The collection of MJ songs you have right now is pretty amazing so we can't fault Cirque du Soleil, because apparently they have a pretty great collection of songs.
It would be so interesting to hear you break down a song like "Who is it" not just because it's my favorite, but because it's tonely quite deep, just like "2000 Watts" for example.
Keep up the amazing work! Much appreciated!
Great request! 😇
@@SkillJim Yooooooo, SkillJim liking Michael Jackson, Sonic and SEGA?! This cannot be a coincidence #michaeljacksoncomposedsonic3 :P
@@Master-Mo I think people who grew up with SEGA are just a special breed of people 😅
Congratulations on your excellent work Chris!!! You're just laying out in detail why MJ is the greatest of all time.
MJ was just unbelievable ❤️❤️❤️❤️ the king of Vocals 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I´ve always thought he really invented his unique singing style on Thriller but the aoows and whoos and grit are already here.
It's intriguing why this video has so little views. Workin' Day and Night is an early MJ masterpiece, besides Don't stop. So much funkiness.
The constant breathing is there to give you the impression of someone working nonstop lol, but he totally uses it as instrument. And you know what’s more amazing? That he didn’t need to catch breath at all… it’s totally “faked”, he’s in total control of his voice, laying down each word in a flawless tune (almost in a perfect way one could say), he isn’t stressin a bit between singing and beatboxing with his sole breath. Such a GOAT!
9:26 This run is absolutely insane. Despite the imperfections, he easily had some of the best raw vocal abilities. I believe his runs are very underrated. He has incredible agility. Glad you got to this one Chris. Can’t wait to hear more in-depth analysis from the Off the Wall album! Some of his best vocals without a doubt.
His vocal peak, no debate.
Omg Chris I am sooo glad I found your page! I absolutely love Michael Jackson and it is great to see someone who actually understand and appreciate him as a vocalist and the musical genius that he is! LOVED MJ MY WHOLE LIFE
THANK YOU FOR THIS
Awesome!!!!!!! Always love the MJ isolated tracks. They have been becoming my favorites.
he was 20 back then....with 20 I sounded like a baby when I sung that high
Fr
This has got to be one of the most fun listens with these MJ recording sessions!
Thank you, Chris. It's lovely to hear you laugh at some of Michael's vocalisations - it shows just how much fun you have listening to these! My favourite part of this track is from 18:44 where his vocals compliment the instrumentation so well. Can I be bold and ask that you unmute some of the music tracks more often, just so we can hear how well the vocals accompany them in places like this? Thank you!
Additionally, I thank you for pointing out the tonal "perfections" of today's music. I will intentionally allow artists to be "off" in their vocal performances when I produce them.
I love these multitrack break downs- I think it showcases how much better human-played music sounds than machine played music. No LinnDrum, no copy/paste… monster musicians just slaying
The horn section at the beginning always brings to mind the spinning dance routine he used to do on tour with the whole group. Lucky enough to watch him several times live. I was obsessed with this song in my teens ❤😂
Amazing as usual. I love your content. MJ is out of this world.
him and janet did the bottle taps
My all time favourite MJ song
I would LOVE to hear Michael Jackson’s Scream multitracks!
Me too!
I would like that for the whole HIStory album, if you ask me
@@esmooth919 Dude imagine haha
Thank you for doing this song! One of my all time favorites! Looking forward to you maybe one day doing ‘Remember the Time’
Amazing video as always Chris! Hey had a suggestion. So I know there are plenty of Michael Acapellas to be found on CZcams. I know it’s not as cool as the multitracks, but! In case you cant find more multitracks there’s always that option!
One of my favourite MJ songs. Genius all around, great track.
Michael's home demo of this song is just 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼 hitting cowbells and bottles, harmonizing with himself. 👌🏼👌🏼👌🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
We really love these breakdowns! Thank you so much 🔥🔥🔥
Glad you like them!
PLEASE DO SOME MORE CUTS FROM OFF THE WALL????? Whew!!!! God, I KNEW MJ WAS AMAZING, BUT WOWWWWWWWW!!!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤THANK FOR ANOTHER AMAZING VIDEO!!!! #OFFTHEWALL
For the horn line, Jerry Hey and Gary Grant recorded the trumpet parts in 4 parts. Larry Williams and Kim Hutchcroft played 1st and 2nd tenor saxophone. Km also played the baritone saxophone along with Bill Reichenbach on trombone with F attachment.
The human voice, the original and first instrument. Michael Jackson emphasized the epitome and essence the first instrument. Gotta love it. By the way, great video and breakdown!!!
MJ, the ear candy that keeps on giving and giving. RIP MJ.
One of my favourite MJ songs, thanks so much!
My pleasure!
I'm a percussionist/drummer, so the rhythm is like kryptonite to me, haha
By the way, I laughed when Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Michael Jackson 86th out of 200 greatest singers of all time.
Quite amusing, I must say. But in my opinion, MJ deserves the top spot as a vocalist.
From his unmatched preteen to teenager vocals to his consistently outstanding adult vocals, he stands out.
Moreover, his versatility shines through as he effortlessly navigates through various styles including rock, funk, jazz, reggae, tropical island, and R&B.
This is precisely why I consider him the greatest vocalist of all time. He is one of the first to sing different style of genre. ( Prince and Rick James etc.)
Thank you so much for this breakdown video of Michael's tracks. I am not a musician, but I so appriciate what I am hearing here in your vids. I've been a fan of Michael (and his brothers) since I was about 6 years old. I'm 60 now. Thank you for highlighting the talent and genius in the late Michael Jackson.
I love you did this track i think this is an underrated one
Big Chris in the building Let’s gooo, one of my fav mj songs
Another banger! Great job again! It's so cool to walk through the museum of each song. It's almost like bringing Michael back to life. I bet his family would love this. Can't wait for dangerous and human nature, and stranger in moscow!! Thank you for being you!
You should watch the bad25 documentary bruce swedien his engineer shows what mic he used for michael during recording for all his songs
Please more from Off the Wall!! I need to hear "Get on the Floor"!
I love the brass in Quincy's arrangements...he played loads of different brass instruments in high school (?), that's why he uses them so much, he knows how to write for them.
FINALLY maybe we can get a 12-inch remix of this song!
One of my favorite of his songs!
This is ny favorite song. My job asked me why? I said it just makes my soul move. Can't explained it.
One of the best MJ songs 🎵 🙌 ever
LOVE these MJ videos Chris! PLEASE keep them coming. Been an MJ fan since childhood, and listening to these has given me a new appreciation for how gifted an artist he truly was! Watching your videos reminds me of what Michael said in his Oprah interview in 93.. He said he wished people would take more of an interest in the "anatomy of his craftsmanship" Respect bro! 👌
Another part of me - michael jackson🙏🙏
Brilliant MJ.
Muchas gracias por estos regalos, ¿podrías hacer con la canción Threatened? Álbum: Invincible
A special shoutout to Q and Rod Temperton! RIP MJ and Rod🙏🏽🕊️
Hi Chris 👋
Think you so so much !!
would never say it enough but Michael was a genius to record his songs in his own way and not just the guy comes and he leaves...
He has watched his predecessors so much: Berry Gordy, Bobby Taylor, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Barry White and Quincy Jones, Gamble and Huff...
Everything was a study of writing through voice, breathing, beat box etc....
Think you again Chris 👍👍👍
Off the wall is my favourite album of all time
Thank you, thank you, thank you! That was really awesome!!
If you could get your hands on “Whatever Happens” that would be cool
Royal academy continues. Your apraciation and fascination with the art that he created is affectionate and i am happy you are doing it so well.
Can't thank you enough Chris. I am watching almost every video of yours to learn something new every time !
Great video 👍 I wonder if that brass section was also gated - beyond tight.
I think so!
18:44 HAAAAA AHHHHH, always loved that part.
Great video, Chris! These ad-libs are priceless, the King was amazing.
It’s always satisfying watching your videos about mj’s vocals! Really is! You are so good at bringing attention to some aspects and details that most people wouldn’t notice if it wasn’t because your videos. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Bravo, bravo Chris, this is amazing work
I love watching your videos man! I think "they don't care about us' would be an amazing track to analyze. I hope it will come in the future.
Dear Chris,
I thank you for this video and I love the most about you, its professionalism and your perfection explained how a singer or a score can become magical when you decorate the music and the vocal sessions.
Many thanks 😊👍👍👍
I’ve always considered this song to be a cousin of “things I do for you” from the Jacksons, which was put on their destiny album the year prior to off the wall. There are some very similar adlibs and funky instrumentation.
i love how they construct the sounds unbelievable
cha,cha,choo,choo,cha,cha,cha..owwwww..
This is one of my top favorite MJ songs. The groove of this song is so good. And his raw aggressive intuitive vocals just top it all off.
AWESOME !!!
14:15 this voice is 🔥
One of the most distinctly, innovative, soulful, versatile, huge range singers/adlibbers, calls voices of all time
We want more Mj
Your MJ vids are awesome. I don’t know if you’ve ever covered the multitrack for “Why You Wanna Trip On Me” -I’d really be interested in hearing that one!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS SONG! MUSICALLY IT IS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! YOU CAN HEAR EVERY INSTRUMENT! I WANT TO HEAR MUSIC LIKE THIS WITH REAL INSTRUMENT! IT WILL NEVER BE ANOTHER MICHAEL JACKSON! THE MUSICIANS IN THIS SONG ARE AWESOME LIKE WOW!!❤️😍🥰🔥‼️

Wow what a break down!
Michael!!!
God bless you! I have ALWAYS wanted to hear how he achieved his breath control in that quick musical beat he does from 5:37-5:55 in the intro of this song! Thank! You! 🙌🏾👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽⭐️👍🏽 You rock!!! 🤩😎
Just an idea but Rolling Stones just did their top 200 vocalists perhaps u should do a video on it. MJ got something like #87
Good idea! Those "top" lists always drive me nuts because they are so arbitrary! One of those in the past had Chris Cornell as 70-something out of 100 in "rock vocalists' ... What a mis-representation!!
@@chrisliepe this time no: Madonna, Celine Dion, Andre Botticelli, Tony Bennett, nor a lot of Jazz greats
@@christopherballero866 WOW
Of course, put John Lennon in top of the list(....), and throw MJ again in shadow, it's heartbreaking and unfair, and others ,instead of Chris Cornell,, which I also admire (but I love more Maynard's vocal soul). Anyway that magazine had a really not close relationship with MJ, they told him after his success of this album ,, Off the wall,, that they don't put black people on their cover, which was one of the multiple inequality that put fire in Michael, not to mention that from time to time they like to throw anew KOP. Have their way, MJ is phenomenal and unique anyway. Thank you, I really like this song, esp the live performances!
Trolling Stones are irrelevant. They hate MJ since the beginning.
Love iiiiiit
Off The Wall is my absolute favorite MJ album of all time. He was incredible ~ never be another. The only other is his nephew Jaafar looking forward to the biopic. Jaafar's voice is very similar to his uncle's.
This song is SO good.
This is so great doing the deep dive into his vocals. I use to talk about the evolution of his voice. I particularly was interested in how MJ's voice goes preachy kinda gritty...when did that come I to play... seems like it started in Thriller, was that something he went over with his vocal coach? Thanks again for these Awesomeness Videos... I got some MJ remixes ...let's hk up would love to share and converse ,PeaceLove&GodBless
Every thought about doing remember the time. Michael Jackson meets New Jack swing🔥.
*Ever *?
Thank you for doing this song! Looking forward to you maybe one day doing ‘Who is it’ song...
Your analysis are my favorites! I would love for you to analyze Speechless or Stranger in Moscow🤩
Wow Mike was singing Wah Wahs rhythm guitar lick as well!
Paul Jackson,Jr played guitar on this
@@MikeJ6129 I think Paul’s first album with MJ was “Thriller.” Paul was a really young dude at the time in 1979 maybe 19 or 20, he was a teenage goon on “Good Times” a couple years before this.
