  • Old Strawberry Mansion was a historic North Philadelphia neighborhood. Moviehouse Productions' special guest is Shelly Rosen, who related her experiences growing up in the "Mansion" between 1940-1956.
"Remembering Strawberry Mansion" is the latest edition in a series of "Moviehouse Productions" on "lost" Philadelphia neighborhoods.
In its peak years, 20% of Philadelphia's Jewish population lived in this area.
The western boundary of Strawberry Mansion has been updated to include a section of 34th Street just south of Lehigh Avenue.

I lived in Strawberry Mansion. I was born 1957 and as I grew up you didn't have to go nowhere because all the stores were in walking distance. Strawberry Mansion was a beautiful neighborhood. I really miss those great days. Park movie 31st and Diamond st.

Strawberry Mansion was the terminus of several trolley lines, they were the 3,7,8,33,39 54, and the Fairmount Park trolley. The last one converted to bus was the 54 in 1964. Smith’s playground was a wonderful part of my childhood. One has to remember Robin Hood Dell I saw Louis Armstrong there in 1970 I was 11 years old that summer. I say thanks for the memories.

We could heard the mostly Philadelphia Orchestra (Robin Hood Orch) perform with the best of the world's opera and classical musicians conducted likewise by the BEST! West Philly here. Our part of town had a huge Jewish community from the 1890s right up to the 1950s. Then the area changed and Shuls became African-American churches. Now in the 21st Century the area is changing once again and young Jewish families are moving back ... we have a shul, Kol Tzedek, on Baltimore Ave.

Excellent interview and reminiscence, I think it is very important to capture the memories for future generations to appreciate what life was like even when the culture wasn't your own.

We went to Woodside Park for the amusement rides. Took the Route 8 trolley to get there.

What about Ridge Avenue be included from the intersection of York ST/33rd St to Lehigh Ave...where else could one possibly place Ridge Ave ? Common sense not entire common? Wikipedia needs updating as well as google maps!
