  • As of November 15, the world's population has exceeded 8 billion people - a growth of another billion in just over a decade. India is on course to drive global population growth. But can it handle the challenges that come with it?

This is what happens when you decide that you have nothing better to do than to constantly engage in the activity that promotes procreation, rather than working on improving living conditions for the already existing population. The same thing is occurring in Indonesia. One would think that the correlation would be obvious but, if they see it, that doesn't appear to be having any affect on their behavior.

Wtf, no! India's and China's population have been high throughout history, due to the highly fertile land for agriculture. Currently, India's population is increasing, but the rate of increase is decreasing. After reaching a population of 1.6 billion, the population will go down.
Most of the population increase will come from African countries. This is due to their increasing standard of living and hence longevity of life. Remember though, the population is not increasing because more babies are born, but it increases as people keep living longer. The elderly population is increasing.

@@devenford2322 In 2020, the birthrate for the U.S.A. was 1.64 children per woman, and for India, in the same year, it was 2.18.
On top of this, in terms of sheer numbers, the U.S.A. receives far more immigrants than any other country in the world. In 2021, the percentage of the population from American immigrants was 26%, while for India, it was 0.04%, putting it in 14th place.
While the life expectancy in the U.S.A. has gone down in the last couple of years, it's still over 77 years, while India's is barely over 70 years.
India's agricultural exports have jumped exponentially in the past year, now being 19%, while the U.S.A.'s are at 20%; but, in sheer numbers, that's 50.21 billion U.S. dollars for India, and 177 billion U.S. dollars for America.
So, let's not candy-coat the situation.

The constant growth of the population requires the expenditure of large resources, you will have to cut down more forests, build more cities, which will cause irreparable damage to nature.

Humans are crowding out all other species of plants and animals. Education and birth control are key to reducing poverty and hunger. Having a child that you can not provide for yourself is cruel and irresponsible. We need solutions not just sympathy. Endless population growth is not sustainable on a finite planet. Every country needs to "TRY" to be more self sufficient. When there are not enough resources to sustain a population something has to give. Well the interviewer is equally political in asking the questions. India currently has a TFR of 2 ( ie. 2 children being born per family) & life expectancy is rising ( currently 72 & expected to clock 85 as in Europe). So you will see a rise in population for sometime. I don't think it will be more challange than it is today. Because by 2050, a large section of population will be old & retiring & the young will have more employment opportunities but taxes on the young will be more as in Europe.

A single generation agreeing to only have 1 child, would cut the population in half. This would allow limited resources like oil would last for twice as long, and pollution would be cut in half. Diseases should also not spread as easily in less dense populations. Housing prices would also fall dramatically, which is at least good for the consumer. The negative effects would be that one generation would have to pay more tax for the older generation to get a reasonable pension, but with cheap housing prices, people could save up at least a decent sum of money for their retirement. With only half the population, we only have half the scientists and inventors, which would slow down human evolution. We would also just have half the engineers for bigger projects like railroads and that type of stuff, but that also means that this type of work would be plentiful, and its much less problematic to have some patience, than having a planet that turns into Venus because of some potential runaway greenhouse effect (if that stuff is actually a real problem. Im not a scientist, so it feels pretty ignorant to even question it)...

@@darinherrick9224 Why did you immediately suspect i meant that it would lower population overnight? And what i said was just an oversimplified example. A more realistic approach would be to give people some tax benefits if they dont get more than 1 kid, and increase tax on people who get more than 2 kids. As long as nobody gets more than 2 kids, population would eventually go down just because some people dont get any kids...
BTW... I checked US population growth, and it is the lowest in 80 years - but still GROWING. Im sure you realize that there is a limit for how many people we can sustain on this planet, and here in Europe you mostly just find cities, mountainous/hilly areas, and some forested areas, that is not already being used as farmland - and it is not just Europe that has pretty much pushed its farming capacity to the max... The longer we wait until we take this seriously, the more people will have to participate in a "depopulation" campaign...
