    Hey there mate!
    Just saw this review, so great to see you've been giving this thing a workout!
    Absolutely hear you on the roundness of the handle. The JBS original has much flatter sides for easier vertical alignment, however within the traditions of Nepalese knifemaking, flatter handles seem very unusual. We pushed for the change but the guys really wanted to stick with it. On the V2 the handle is a fair bit more refined along with the other size changes.
    Take care,
    Andrew

  • @Psiberzerker
    @Psiberzerker Před 4 lety +2

    These are what I call "Beaters." I like to carry at least 2 knives, a sharp little knife for doing fine work in tight places (Like skinning a squirrel) and a Beater. The primary purpose of the Beater is to keep the sharp little knife sharp. Try to fillet a trout with an 8" semi-serrated, or saw backed bowie. Then, don't try to cut a tree down with a scalpel, or preferably a whole pack of scalpel blades with a compact handle. (I have a cut down X-acto handle in my EDC kit.) You only need one big beater, but you can carry several small blades, all over your person, with several different useful blade designs. In fact, I highly recommend it.

    • @Psiberzerker
      @Psiberzerker Před 4 lety +1

      Also, don't overthink it on the beater. It's a beater, it's supposed to take punishment, and need resharpening. High quality steel (Or hardness) keeps an edge better, but then it's a bitch to sharpen, and is more likely to break than bend. If it bends, you can bend it back. If it breaks, then see what you can salvage from it, but don't forget that it's a Beater. Save your money, and spend it on more specialized knives. You can cut through a pine sapling with a chunk of lawnmower blade, or a sharpened leaf spring. In fact, a lot of authentic Gurkha Khukris were made from TLC (Toyota Land Cruiser) leaf springs annealed, and hammered flat in campfires, between 2 rocks. That's what you're looking for: A chunk of steel you can sharpen, and bend back into shape. If it comes to you already knife shaped, and sharpened, great, but the survival mindset is making do with what you have. If you have time to pack, and plan, you have time to avoid the life-threatening situation in the first place.

    Nice to see a C15. I love Kevin Cox's knives. I wear a thick (0.300") C14 as part of my ditch kit when I'm working in remote locations. The shoulder sheath rig is perfect for a larger knife - especially if you are getting in and out of vehicles / might have to pry / cut your way out of a vehicle - or chop down a telephone pole... I keep a fire kit, a small sharpening stone, and some water pure tabs in the attached sheath pouch. This thing is a serious contender for the one knife option.

  • @dennisleighton2812
    @dennisleighton2812 Před rokem +1

    It's really a pity you didn't have the CS Trail Master San Mai III version in your line-up! The convex grind on it is real, right down to the cutting edge (NO secondary bevel at all) and because of this it's a bit heavier/beefier. Also, the blade is a full 9 1/2 inches (14 1/2 inches overall), and the guard is also steel. It is a beast of a knife, and splits even better than that full flat grind. Also the blade stock is actually 5/16ths thick!
    Big knives almost always evoke big discussion, and big feelings. On the one hand, big knives make big work easy (and fun), while at the same time involve a big mass penalty - most of the knives pictured weigh in at over a full pound, while some are possibly closer to 2 pounds. If you're toting a pack, that is quite a stiff penalty. Such big knives usually mean that one needs smaller knives for those many smaller tasks which would be awkward with some of those bigger swords (errr knives, of course!). Because of this I made the decision to go for the San Mai III mentioned above. For me, it is the perfect balance between big enough and, for some of those small tasks, small enough as well. For the last 3 decades I've used a knife I made called my Bushwhacker, and I learned many things about knife work with that knife. Mostly, I lamented the fact that it was slightly too light, and too short (12 1/2 inches overall). The first day I tried out my new Trail Master I knew I'd hit the jackpot! It ticked all the boxes where my Bushwhacker had question marks! Yes, it's expensive, and is definitely a "forever knife". OK, it still does not cater for all those small tasks, but it does cater for enough of them. For the rest I'm prepared to carry a second knife better suited to those tasks. Basically, a belt knife like a Cold Steel SRK with the full flat grind, or the San Mai III. The two together probably weigh as much as one of those big machetes. If not, I'll make the sacrifice and carry both anyway.
    Just as you love really big knives, my leaning is towards having several knives - I subscribe to the "right tool for the job at hand" school of thought. What this means is that, in addition to the above, I'd carry a small knife for "fiddly stuff", say an ESEE Izula II, for carving, notching, etc. Of course I always have on me my SAK/Leatherman, depending on what I'm doing or where I'm going!
    So, thanks for that video, and, by the way I really like some of those examples you included.

    Good video and a good selection of knives (swords?). I’ve got a Bernese kukri (blade length about 14”) that I really like. Since it’s locally produced I didn’t believe you’d have it on your list but I’m glad to see a couple of kukris made the list. I’ve paired a Mora Companion with my kukri (and it’s two small blades). Between them and a folding saw they handle all the chores I need to get done while I’m in the woods.

    T.O.P.S El Chete
    Sort of surprised you don't already have a video on this,
    Almost a 12' blade (11.8') designed around a "competition chopper" (knife sports)
    its kind of like a meat cleaver crossed with a scalpel, and I can pretty much guarantee it will chop deeper with less effort than any of your knives (nice collection btw, I like over built gear rather than size, i really like a couple of those blades)
    So until someone invents a Lightsaber, this is the Knife,
    (try reaching out to T.O.P.S I doubt you would be disappointed)
    And nice channel, I agree with 99.999+ of what you say, (which is a rare thing with "survival" channels lol) I will direct people to your channel and solid advice,

    I wish BRK would remake a few of the first 3...perhaps in CPM 1 or 3V
    Budget: Camp 10 Period ....I wish they made this a camp 12 with a bit more weight. 70 bucks? At 1.5 LBS this would be AMAZING. As is..not bad. STEAL for 40-50 bucks
    MAYBE :Power eagle 12..the one I borrowed was WELL used and not 100% sharp.handle was iffy. Could be decent modded a bit.
    Tried the BK21 becker. The handle was broken so really couldnt test it.Kind of an odd shape for many uses(real world) GREAT as a weapon
    Tried 7 different Condors.I would call them ultra budget quality at a not budget price. Steel ( on all I tested) was S O F T.held no edge at all. RC 50ish I assume
    **ALL of them worked better than ANY small axe (Hatchet) at ANY cost(sorry axe lovers).Just more usefull. Used 4 of the "best" u all know

    One of my favorite choppers is the Fox FX 679 Pathfinder in Buderus Nitro-b stainless steel. 13,5" / 0.20" blade and 20" overall. Haven`t seen it tested on YT yet, but I`d love to hear the opinion of this blade by experienced knife-users.

    I have a big knife from a company called "Nakura" it was bought for £10($12) as a "need right now" knife because I had left mine at home(yes, I know, but I'm not alone in that)it's a straight "Kukri" style full tang 19.5 inches overall, 14.5 blade around 1/4+ thick with a decent handguard & a rubber coated handle & it's "Stainless Steel", the idea was to use it for the trip then maybe give it someone I didn't like very much, I abused this knife, really abused it, & it worked fine, much better than I could ever have expected, so I kept it, & I have taken it everywhere every time I've been camping, hunting & everything else that ends in ing, it is just a lovely lump of metal to have, the rubber handle is a bit odd, it feels like it sticks to your hand without being sticky, it's a really comfortable fit, you can, & I have used it all day without it slipping or even feeling uncomfortable in any way, I have had to sharpen it quite a few times but there is still masses of meat on the bone & it's still going strong after 20+ years, that said, an acquaintance of mine bought the exact same knife, make & model & it was shite, he broke it 4 times before he totally destroyed it in a total of 23 days of use, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but the same can be said about any knife from any company at any price. I don't "Baton" with a knife, I have an old "Silverline" axe for that £3.75 ($4.5) & a "Bush saw" from Lidl for £4($5), I am the focus of the "GearSnob's" those idiots that most of them never go out & if they do it's all on display, absolutely pristine because it's never been used, my beautiful autistic granddaughter (10) had to show one guy how to use the new "BowDrill" that cost him £40($50(for 3 bits of wood & a shoelace)) she used the one she made for nothing from what was on the forest floor.

    Camilus carnivore x, i get a lot of crap for loving it, but its a great knife and is so versatile, plus the titanium bonded blade holds an edge like a boss, unlike most middle school edgelords. I find if you take the time and put a fine edge on it using a wet stone, it will do everything you want it to and more.
