@@DropForgedSurvival after watching your video I had to have one. Used it a lot around the fire pit but unfortunately haven't been able to take it camping yet.
I literally said out loud "You sadist!" when he used the edge on the fire steel. @5:15 Also, I am now hooked on the design of the PLAN A, may actually buy it.
Hey there mate! Just saw this review, so great to see you've been giving this thing a workout! Absolutely hear you on the roundness of the handle. The JBS original has much flatter sides for easier vertical alignment, however within the traditions of Nepalese knifemaking, flatter handles seem very unusual. We pushed for the change but the guys really wanted to stick with it. On the V2 the handle is a fair bit more refined along with the other size changes. Take care, Andrew
These are what I call "Beaters." I like to carry at least 2 knives, a sharp little knife for doing fine work in tight places (Like skinning a squirrel) and a Beater. The primary purpose of the Beater is to keep the sharp little knife sharp. Try to fillet a trout with an 8" semi-serrated, or saw backed bowie. Then, don't try to cut a tree down with a scalpel, or preferably a whole pack of scalpel blades with a compact handle. (I have a cut down X-acto handle in my EDC kit.) You only need one big beater, but you can carry several small blades, all over your person, with several different useful blade designs. In fact, I highly recommend it.
Also, don't overthink it on the beater. It's a beater, it's supposed to take punishment, and need resharpening. High quality steel (Or hardness) keeps an edge better, but then it's a bitch to sharpen, and is more likely to break than bend. If it bends, you can bend it back. If it breaks, then see what you can salvage from it, but don't forget that it's a Beater. Save your money, and spend it on more specialized knives. You can cut through a pine sapling with a chunk of lawnmower blade, or a sharpened leaf spring. In fact, a lot of authentic Gurkha Khukris were made from TLC (Toyota Land Cruiser) leaf springs annealed, and hammered flat in campfires, between 2 rocks. That's what you're looking for: A chunk of steel you can sharpen, and bend back into shape. If it comes to you already knife shaped, and sharpened, great, but the survival mindset is making do with what you have. If you have time to pack, and plan, you have time to avoid the life-threatening situation in the first place.

Nice man.. It may be a decent tool but most SOG Productions are not "TOP Performers" but in no way would I ever dare tell someone not to use a tool they love. Not my place.
You have a lot of good choices here. I have the Kershaw Camp 14 from here and the 16” version of the Fiddleback Forge machete. They have served me well. The Kershaw is performer for sure. I really like that Helm blade; a friend of mine has the Benghazi warfighter and looks solid.
i have a ka-bar kukri machete that I absolutely love. the best blade IVE ever owned. I can cut a 3" diameter live maple tree with one swing with that thing and I've even decapitated large whitetail with a single swing. (already dead of course)
DropForgedSurvival Awesome, thank you! I might have to purchase one. It just gets to the point where I have too much stuff......I think I spend TOO MUCH....😂😂
Nice to see a C15. I love Kevin Cox's knives. I wear a thick (0.300") C14 as part of my ditch kit when I'm working in remote locations. The shoulder sheath rig is perfect for a larger knife - especially if you are getting in and out of vehicles / might have to pry / cut your way out of a vehicle - or chop down a telephone pole... I keep a fire kit, a small sharpening stone, and some water pure tabs in the attached sheath pouch. This thing is a serious contender for the one knife option.
It's really a pity you didn't have the CS Trail Master San Mai III version in your line-up! The convex grind on it is real, right down to the cutting edge (NO secondary bevel at all) and because of this it's a bit heavier/beefier. Also, the blade is a full 9 1/2 inches (14 1/2 inches overall), and the guard is also steel. It is a beast of a knife, and splits even better than that full flat grind. Also the blade stock is actually 5/16ths thick! Big knives almost always evoke big discussion, and big feelings. On the one hand, big knives make big work easy (and fun), while at the same time involve a big mass penalty - most of the knives pictured weigh in at over a full pound, while some are possibly closer to 2 pounds. If you're toting a pack, that is quite a stiff penalty. Such big knives usually mean that one needs smaller knives for those many smaller tasks which would be awkward with some of those bigger swords (errr knives, of course!). Because of this I made the decision to go for the San Mai III mentioned above. For me, it is the perfect balance between big enough and, for some of those small tasks, small enough as well. For the last 3 decades I've used a knife I made called my Bushwhacker, and I learned many things about knife work with that knife. Mostly, I lamented the fact that it was slightly too light, and too short (12 1/2 inches overall). The first day I tried out my new Trail Master I knew I'd hit the jackpot! It ticked all the boxes where my Bushwhacker had question marks! Yes, it's expensive, and is definitely a "forever knife". OK, it still does not cater for all those small tasks, but it does cater for enough of them. For the rest I'm prepared to carry a second knife better suited to those tasks. Basically, a belt knife like a Cold Steel SRK with the full flat grind, or the San Mai III. The two together probably weigh as much as one of those big machetes. If not, I'll make the sacrifice and carry both anyway. Just as you love really big knives, my leaning is towards having several knives - I subscribe to the "right tool for the job at hand" school of thought. What this means is that, in addition to the above, I'd carry a small knife for "fiddly stuff", say an ESEE Izula II, for carving, notching, etc. Of course I always have on me my SAK/Leatherman, depending on what I'm doing or where I'm going! So, thanks for that video, and, by the way I really like some of those examples you included.

Good video and a good selection of knives (swords?). I’ve got a Bernese kukri (blade length about 14”) that I really like. Since it’s locally produced I didn’t believe you’d have it on your list but I’m glad to see a couple of kukris made the list. I’ve paired a Mora Companion with my kukri (and it’s two small blades). Between them and a folding saw they handle all the chores I need to get done while I’m in the woods.
Jealous of that Dan Tope kukri! Had to snag one of the LT Wright machetes after seeing your video. Ive been doing survey work in central TX cutting thru brush with a Condor parang and a Silky saw. That firesteel you have is HUGE! I want one!

I actually just found you a little over a week ago. I watched your 7 day Walmart challenge right up to my week long canoe/ camping trip. that video was pretty cool. I watched this video to see what other larger machete type blades are out there. im on the east coast and for years now I have been using bear grills machete. I have to say i like it. its gerber so it is so simple to fix and sharpen, i have gone through some sizable logs and it pretty easy to work with smaller wood like smaller tinder or even making camp equipment
Chris, I'm in love with the Wasteland. Frickin thing looks like a beast, but I can see your gripe with the turn-y handle. I might have to buy one just on principle.
For 2020 you should consider the Fiddleback Camp knife. Also, while currently out of production, the JX5, Parang and Dakkar from Bark River are absolute BEASTS, if you can get your hands on one.
Best big choppers : Bark River Grasso Bolo 3 (2 is nice also), Bark River parang,Bark River Dakkar ( Senegal also but toooo big for most average people).Bark River vengeful 1 I wish BRK would remake a few of the first 3...perhaps in CPM 1 or 3V Budget: Camp 10 Period ....I wish they made this a camp 12 with a bit more weight. 70 bucks? At 1.5 LBS this would be AMAZING. As is..not bad. STEAL for 40-50 bucks MAYBE :Power eagle 12..the one I borrowed was WELL used and not 100% sharp.handle was iffy. Could be decent modded a bit. Tried the BK21 becker. The handle was broken so really couldnt test it.Kind of an odd shape for many uses(real world) GREAT as a weapon Tried 7 different Condors.I would call them ultra budget quality at a not budget price. Steel ( on all I tested) was S O F T.held no edge at all. RC 50ish I assume **ALL of them worked better than ANY small axe (Hatchet) at ANY cost(sorry axe lovers).Just more usefull. Used 4 of the "best" u all know Just spent 2 days testing about 20 ***Bark River Bravo Machete was Great for light / light medium uses.
I just bought the Condor Ironpath and pre-ordered the Condor Balam THAT chopper looks perfect for batoning can't wait, keep grinding out these big blade reviews brotha stay strong&healthy safe&happy!!(=✌💚
One of my favorite choppers is the Fox FX 679 Pathfinder in Buderus Nitro-b stainless steel. 13,5" / 0.20" blade and 20" overall. Haven`t seen it tested on YT yet, but I`d love to hear the opinion of this blade by experienced knife-users.
Take a look at the condor tactical gladius . Its a great sword! I took the black coating off the blade, now it looks like a beast! Also, wrap some wilson wrap on the handle
I have a big knife from a company called "Nakura" it was bought for £10($12) as a "need right now" knife because I had left mine at home(yes, I know, but I'm not alone in that)it's a straight "Kukri" style full tang 19.5 inches overall, 14.5 blade around 1/4+ thick with a decent handguard & a rubber coated handle & it's "Stainless Steel", the idea was to use it for the trip then maybe give it someone I didn't like very much, I abused this knife, really abused it, & it worked fine, much better than I could ever have expected, so I kept it, & I have taken it everywhere every time I've been camping, hunting & everything else that ends in ing, it is just a lovely lump of metal to have, the rubber handle is a bit odd, it feels like it sticks to your hand without being sticky, it's a really comfortable fit, you can, & I have used it all day without it slipping or even feeling uncomfortable in any way, I have had to sharpen it quite a few times but there is still masses of meat on the bone & it's still going strong after 20+ years, that said, an acquaintance of mine bought the exact same knife, make & model & it was shite, he broke it 4 times before he totally destroyed it in a total of 23 days of use, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, but the same can be said about any knife from any company at any price. I don't "Baton" with a knife, I have an old "Silverline" axe for that £3.75 ($4.5) & a "Bush saw" from Lidl for £4($5), I am the focus of the "GearSnob's" those idiots that most of them never go out & if they do it's all on display, absolutely pristine because it's never been used, my beautiful autistic granddaughter (10) had to show one guy how to use the new "BowDrill" that cost him £40($50(for 3 bits of wood & a shoelace)) she used the one she made for nothing from what was on the forest floor.
Camilus carnivore x, i get a lot of crap for loving it, but its a great knife and is so versatile, plus the titanium bonded blade holds an edge like a boss, unlike most middle school edgelords. I find if you take the time and put a fine edge on it using a wet stone, it will do everything you want it to and more.
@@DropForgedSurvival I got one but haven't got to use it yet, it's an absolute beast when you hold it, it's heavy but super heavy duty. Would be good for shtf/post apocalyptic blade, would love to see what it could do if you could get one. I recon it could take a pretty big tree down...
My favorite blade of that size is the Terävä Skrama but only because I haven't been able to get a Bark River JX5 in cpm 3v. I haven't had any personal experience with a JX5 but I want one. The skrama though, I know is an awesome blade that size.
When you say “we” such as “we’ve been able to spend quite a few...” or “we really like this knife” “we like this warranty the most” do you take someone out there with you to film or something? I always thought it was just you, just curious.
Welp. If your channel doesn't work out in the long run, and you grow bored of quest for bushcraft knowledge- you can definitely fall back on selling knives 😅
Where is the terava skrama??
I haven't had mine over a year now. It was an excellent blade for sure. but... these babies have my heart currently.

Dan Tope
For me the Terävää Skrama is my go to when it comes to big blades. Unbeatable price too.
It isn’t a bad blade. For $80 with a sheath. Its solid for sure
Terävä Skrama is great in regard to the blade/cost ratio. But ugly.
But here are some others that are quite sexy... 😊

Absolutely hear you on the roundness of the handle. The JBS original has much flatter sides for easier vertical alignment, however within the traditions of Nepalese knifemaking, flatter handles seem very unusual. Chris, I'm in love with the Wasteland. Frickin thing looks like a beast, but I can see your gripe with the turn-y handle. I might have to buy one just on principle.
Love your knives , u should do a review on da Condor atrox
For 2020 you should consider the Fiddleback Camp knife. Also, while currently out of production, the JX5, Parang and Dakkar from Bark River are absolute BEASTS, if you can get your hands on one.
Where did you get that giant ferro rod
Love the Kershaw camp 12. Would pair perfectly with my Moraknif
Best big choppers : Bark River Grasso Bolo 3 (2 is nice also), Bark River parang,Bark River Dakkar ( Senegal also but toooo big for most average people).Bark River vengeful 1
I wish BRK would remake a few of the first 3...perhaps in CPM 1 or 3V
Budget: Camp 10 Period ....I wish they made this a camp 12 with a bit more weight. 70 bucks? At 1.5 LBS this would be AMAZING. As is..not bad. STEAL for 40-50 bucks
MAYBE :Power eagle 12..the one I borrowed was WELL used and not 100% sharp.handle was iffy. Could be decent modded a bit.
Tried the BK21 becker. The handle was broken so really couldnt test it.Kind of an odd shape for many uses(real world) GREAT as a weapon
Tried 7 different Condors.I would call them ultra budget quality at a not budget price. Steel ( on all I tested) was S O F T.held no edge at all. RC 50ish I assume
**ALL of them worked better than ANY small axe (Hatchet) at ANY cost(sorry axe lovers).Just more usefull. Used 4 of the "best" u all know
Just spent 2 days testing about 20
***Bark River Bravo Machete was Great for light / light medium uses.
Where the link for the not-black kukri and for the last one?
I just bought the Condor Ironpath and pre-ordered the Condor Balam THAT chopper looks perfect for batoning can't wait, keep grinding out these big blade reviews brotha stay strong&healthy safe&happy!!(=✌💚
I just got my Plan A! Bad Ass!
That it is!
Yes, blades! Best weapon doesn't need to be reloaded😎
You are not wrong there
Unless its a Bear...
You rock!!! I love me some knives! You are an awesome speaker!
Thanks Marylou
Thanks again for everything you do I like that kershaw the one with a string threw the handle very nice 😎
If I'm looking at a knife that big I just pull out my 14" Bolo Machete instead ... done.
Take a look at the condor tactical gladius . Its a great sword! I took the black coating off the blade, now it looks like a beast! Also, wrap some wilson wrap on the handle
Love the fire rod.. you should do a survival challenge with Canadian Prepper.
That would be alot of fun and also super expensive! #lifegoals
@@DropForgedSurvival unless he came to you. Lol.
Now that is a knife
Those are the real knives not small Bushcraft knives
Yup.. No baby Blades in the Line Up!
Great review bro. I love big knives! Great review and nice collection!
Infantry Outdoors go check me out on instagram @keithkalal if you love knives
id say the terävä skrama misses. i like it much and the price is hot. also great design.
On my "to do" list,
Keep forgetting about them, only heard good things
The Ontario kukri is amazing great price awesome handle and keeps its edge
It is ok. I dont hate it at all. But for me it was not a favorite.

BK9 Still rocks.
RTAK From ontario
Way to go old school! They are SOLID SOLID Workhorse but not TOP PERFORMERS. Definitely nothing wrong with them at all
Awesome vid !!! I love my esse jungles
You could try the 16" jungle cleaver or the 11" iraqi kukri from everest blades..
I have seen these. They are cool
I want to see the Kodiak!! Now that is a monster machete.
My favorite blade of that size is the Terävä Skrama but only because I haven't been able to get a Bark River JX5 in cpm 3v. I haven't had any personal experience with a JX5 but I want one. The skrama though, I know is an awesome blade that size.
it isn't a 9 inch blade length but this is one of my knives I wanted to share with you. the SOG desert dagger
Is it possible to Cerakote a knife? I've been thinking of doing that to my knives. I love Forged In Fire. It Weel Keel lol
Definitely. Cerakoting can be super cool
Love The Last
love my svord von tempsky bowie...its a beast!
Did you just strike the ferro rod with the blade of that custom knife?🤔
Probably a choil.
I love my Schrade Scimitar.
This is my passion. It will always work because it is what I love!
@@DropForgedSurvival Gooood response dude. I have zero doubts about it my friend.
Sword?!? That might as well be a butter knife.
Well... shrek... Not all of us can rip trees out of the swamp with our bare hands bud. lmao
S H R E K butter knives? Lol Not quite. These are beast mode
@@OutdoorMomma
True, but think of the sandwiches!!!
