Polyester Fiberglass Resin vs EPS Foam - Experiment #1

- Due to a few issues with previous projects, and a fair amount of questions on this topic. I've decided to conduct a little experiment with polyester fiberglass resin on top of EPS(Expanded Polystyrene) foam. The issue is when the polyester resin is applied to the EPS foam, the foam tends to melt. While I am no chemical engineer, a little research has lead me to believe that styrene contained in the polyester resin acts as a solvent on foam. In this video, I'll be doing a simple demonstration with a piece of foam and a few ideas on how to combat the issue. While I understand that Epoxy resin would be a way to avoid the issue altogether, it is more expensive. My main goal is to discuss alternatives for people attempting projects on a budget. This will by no means be an end to the discussion, and I am very open to suggestions and feedback.
I know this video is 4 years old but maybe someone will see this comment. I have used foam for building terrain for tabletop wargaming, and in arts and crafts there is a product called Mod Podge which is used to seal foam so you can use spraypaint on it without the solvents affecting the foam.
The DIY version of Mod Podge is simply Ronseal Interior Wood Varnish mixed with PVA glue. This makes a far stronger and more flexible seal on the foam and I am pretty sure you can do what you want using polyester resin on it. I might give it a test myself soon.
Good call, mod podge is a great glue, I'm needing to glue a 4in. Plug in my boat and will give this a try. Also have a fish tank background I need to finish out.
Mod podge forms a very thin flexible layer, it seems to work well at sealing a lot of other materials as well! I've tried pouring a thin layer of epoxy over previously oiled Teak wood after thorough sanding, and it would always form cloudy layers on the wood surface. Looked like crap.
One layer of mod podge glossy and then epoxy, works beautifully well!!
The masking tape might have absorbed a little of the PVA, just like it would if you spread water over it.
Perhaps the blue painters tape would resist absorbing the PVA?
Blue Painters tape doesn't wrinkle up when you paint it with latex. Your test answered a question I have about a project I'm working on today! Repairing a poling platform on a boat.
The original "filler" material was end-cut balsa wood, which I do not have access to, & replacing it with plywood would add too much weight.

Paint the foam with 5 coats of latex Paint and use polyurethane resin and glass as you would.

Great test and its clear that the fiberglass does not PENETRATE the polystyrene or styrafoam board BUT how does the fiberglass then BOND to these boards with 4 to 5 coats of latex paint ?
The whole idea is that it shouldn't bond to the foam.

Try carpenters wood glue or latex house paint. I have not tried them, but I have heard that they work.
I’m trying polyurethane wood varnish for a barrier to the foam, but I’m going to experiment with some. Scrap pieces first so I don’t ruin my project (rc boat)
What was the result using polyurethane?
To glass a eps foam surfboard with polyester resin should I just use aluminum tape?

i found this hard way and by luck. i happened to joined to piece of polystyrene and it turns out that everything but the pva glue used to adhere the two pieces together held together with no reaction to the resin.
I think you need to use a better quality tape. I’ve used green tape from Menards and blue painters tape and polyester resin won’t stick to it. You need tape with a slick surface. I’ve also used latex paint which works as well.
Hey, great experiment. I am doing the same thing but i am applying Turbo builders bog on polystyrene. That builders bog is unsaturated polyester filler compound. will it go with polystyrene???

PVA glue is just your average everyday water-based ‘white glue’ like Elmers...which can be bought at any craft store (or any store that sells glue). Kids use it for decoupage. One thing that should be in every bodies tool box is parchment paper (steal whoops I mean borrow it from your wife), NOTHING sticks to it (it’s coated in silicone) Edit; 6:20 the PVA glue is water-based, the adhesive on the tape could be water-based. My grade 9 chemistry tells me “like dissolves like”, the glue could have dissolved the tape adhesive
...or just use epoxy resin
