    As you discuss efficiency, I think it's important to narrow the discussion to not just EVs or EV trucks, but specifically to EV trucks while towing. So I'd like to see a comparison on screen of the HUMMER EV's efficiency over two Ike Gauntlets verses the observed efficiency in the Lightning and R1T during their Ike Gauntlets. With upcoming EV trucks like the Cybertruck, we're likely to see even larger gaps between baseline/EPA efficiencies and the actual, observed efficiency while towing.

    • @mybro727
      @mybro727 Před rokem

      Boy, the fact the Cybertruck is still “upcoming” means it won’t be much of a competitor to GMC’s EV trucks who have had their Hummer EV on the road for going on 2 years now. Please don’t make GM laugh. 😂

    • @newscoulomb3705
      @newscoulomb3705 Před rokem

      @@mybro727 I'm certainly not one to hype the Cybertruck, but it should be a competitive option for those who are looking for more of an SUV/adventure truck. People forget that Tesla is still a startup with limited resources and IP to draw from, so their bringing an EV truck/SUV to market will be a worthy accomplishment.
      In my opinion, GM's EVs have always had better underpinnings than Tesla's EVs, but GM hasn't always spoken to numbers the most vocal EV influencers have emphasized (baseline efficiency, range, peak charging speeds, etc.).
      On paper, I expect the Cybertruck to look much better than the HUMMER EV, but I'm counting on folk like TFL to show whether those paper numbers actually match reality. Based on what I've seen so far, that's not likely.

      @@TFLtruck Maybe range should be a separate star, equal to energy (or gallons) remaining divided by full battery (or tank). If a recharge or refuel is required to finish the test then no star should be given for range.
      For example in this test the Hummer EV's stars for range would be:
      Full battery ≈ 212 kWh (9:34)
      Total energy used = 168 kWh (23:04)
      → (212 kWh - 168 kWh)/212 kWh ≈ 0.20 stars for range
      Also why not calculate efficiency before scoring efficiency because the Hummer EV’s MPGe on this test is much higher than that score would indicate.
      Hummer EV with 37" MTs towing 7500lbs efficiency:
      Distance driven = 164 mi (23:04)
      Total energy used = 168 kWh (23:04)
      → 164 mi/168 kWh ≈ 0.97 mi/kWh
      1 gallon of gasoline = 33.7 kWh (EPA)
      → 0.97*33.7 ≈ 32.6 MPGe

    I'd like to make a recommendation as someone who tows a lot. I have a 26' enclosed car trailer that I use to tow my SXS, race car, motorcycles, etc. Here are my recommendations:
    1. Use an enclosed trailer. The increased aerodynamic drag will stress the truck more and be more real world. Most of use aren't towing a vehicle with all of our belongings inside on an open trailer.
    2. Stop using the Ike as the tow test. Because of the cooler ambient temperatures on the Ike the vehicles you're testing never overheat. If you start using other mountains/hills that may be lower altitude but higher ambient temperatures you will see more vehicles fail your test. Most of us aren't towing over the Ike but we are towing up mountains and hills that will require a lot of shifting. In this scenario you will see transmission temps and oil/water temps rise to maximum or put the vehicle into limp mode. This type of testing will show problems in transmission shift logic and cooling issues. A lot of the newer trucks don't have transmission coolers or engine oil coolers that are up to the task.
    Just some recommendations. I do enjoy your videos, thanks.

      @@TFLtruck thanks for the reply. Doing a comparison with the same trailer on a road trip with the electric F150 vs the F150 Lightning would be a great comparison video. It would really expose the downfalls of electric when towing and road-tripping. Compare the cost and also the time needed to complete the trip.
      Another thing not many channels are talking about is the environmental impact of electric vehicles. The farce that electric vehicles are better for the environment is completely false. What are we going to do with all of these millions of massive batteries when they are inoperative in 5 years? Talk about what goes into the mining and creation of a battery. We have 20 year old ICE vehicles on the road still, can we say that about any electric vehicle? How many batteries will an electric vehicle go through in 20 years? Will these electric vehicles be just like our cell phones and computers, where we throw them away every few years and get a new one because it's more cost effective than repair? EV tech is not ready, just my opinion but most of it is based in fact. Thanks

    Andre, I have a concern about the huge screen. It seems to stick up VERY high. Comparing it with the steering wheel, in the video it looks like it sticks up 3/4 of the way up the steering wheel such that I couldn't see your right hand. My concern is that as a shorter person (5' 8") the screen would stick up so high that it could actually partially block my veiw of the road? Is that an issue or does it just look that way due to the camera angle?

      Nah, Bjørn Nyland tested Model S Plaid. Put it on campingmode at 22°C and -4°C outside, batteries held up 4 days.
      What cold does is that it makes air denser so air friction increases. Snow and snowtires increases roll resistance, and therefore energy efficiency decreases.

    I think the Hummer performed and scored as well as it did because it punches so far below its weight class for towing. Like you said, it's really most comparable to a 3/4 ton truck in its weight and construction, and any new diesel 3/4 ton would pass a 7500lb towing test with flying colors as well. To me, the fact that the Hummer is built like an HD but can only tow like a midsize should have cost it at least half a star, maybe more, especially considering how other electric trucks are able to tow more weight while being smaller and lighter than the Hummer.

    So the 0.8 kWh per mile they averaged works out to an average power consumption at 60 mph of 75 kw. If they had a small ICE powering a 75 kw generator on board they would end up with the battery at the same state of charge when they started. BTW, 75 kw equates to only 56 hp, so an ICE capable of producing about twice that should be adequate for the task.

I think the days of owning a vehicle that you drive into the ground over 15 or 20 years are over with EVs. Right now I have a 10-year-old 4runner that I would expect to get at least another 10 years out of, if I owned an EV I would be trying to dump it.
