- Filming coverage of a dialogue scene is the basis for most films. Understanding the logistics is not difficult, but critical to getting a good result that will engage the audience.

"Jarmusch won that award for 'stranger in paradise btw' for being different and that ship has sailed.' What are you talking about? He won the award because it's a great film. Period. And no ship has sailed - someone could be making a great film as we speak with the same format. And sweep all the awards.
Some DP's now use natural lighting, that makes it easier
to record 2 or more angles at the same time...
This is gold dust, thank you!!
Awesome. Please more just like this. Please show more examples. Thanks.
Can do. Look out for day by bay BTS from the feature coming soon.
Really enjoyed watching this video. A lot of challenges/compromises to deal with on set. Last year I started using a shot list, and started shooting out of order, for the sake of not having to constantly move the lighting. However, doing this requires a lot of planning, prior to hitting the record button.
Speaking of lighting, your CZcams live session on lighting was very cool. Look forward to catching your next live video!
I wish you were my teacher just a few years back. What lovely thoughts. Thanks Buddy.
Any time!
Really fantastic! As someone who’s new to learning this, this was so well laid out, thank you!
Excellent video highlighting the many issues encountered when shooting coverage. A follow up exploring solutions would be great.
Thank you! Very helpful.
Thank you for your time and effort
Always welcome
PS - great video other wise as are the rest of yer videos. Thanks for making them.
Thank you!!
wise and tight means ADR. I can tell that you give little thought to sound from the videos I've seen so far.
Great video! CZcams could use some more videos like this!
Cheers! Certainly a lot more like this to come
wow, I'm far away from coverage recording, but man!? That Video-Quality, just insane
Good points. Thank you.
Thank you. This is so helpful, especially the examples.
the second the video starts explaining I'm instantly triggered beyond any reasonable capacity but don't want to write rambling (somewhat) angry comment explaining why 😭
Totally.. good break down of all the compromises. It's all a trade off. I LOVE JIM JARMOUSCH. I'm guessing your talking about Down by Low which is one of my favorites for sure.
Thanks! You think that when you get a bigger crew and more money, it will all be easy but it just gets more complex :)
Kinda random but if you like Down by Law and Jim Jarmusch you should check out the show Fishing with John, from the 90s. It's hilarious. Jim is on the first episode iirc. Each episode is John Lurie (Stranger than Paradise) taking random people like Tom Waits on absurd fishing ventures.
@@allegoricalstatue Finally got around to checking Fishing with John, thanks for the recommendation! I had no idea this even existed. Really cool.
One word: Fincher. that boy does not know the word enough it seems. However, his work is crazy good. So, I'm watching an episode of ER. It's in the dead of winter. The characters are walking down a busy street, cold, snowy, lots of traffic, an ambulance comes by, you can barely hear them, light is crappy, one take. A LOT of that on this show I've noticed. I guess that's the difference between television and cinema I reckon.
You don't just compromise lighting if you do multicam, but you compromise sound too!
good point. well now I know I don't need to buy a second camera!
Amazing content!
your video's always look so good bro!! nice grade
Thanks Randall! Appreciate the support.
No worries!! Be blessed
Thank you for sharing this! The V setup looks a lot like a multi-camera setup. In a hypothetical situation, should a filmmaker consider working with multiple cameras to shoot a take? How would one or two extra cameras affect the lighting and blocking of a scene? I hope your feature project is still in the works, really curious to see it!
Thanks Michael. Adding cameras means the light has to be further away and, unless you are able to take the roof or walls of your set, smaller. This means is not as soft and not as controllable.
@@Crimsonengine Oh, I see! That's why it would be hard to do a multi-camera sitcom outside of a soundstage. That would also make lighting setups like the Book Light impractical; how could you hide that in two separate shots? Thanks for the tip!!
I film 4K so I can punch in, but still cannot achieve Clean Singles (A Dirty OTS is still Dirty even when punched in), unless the actors are seated far apart from each other/divided by a table.
is that the HBO audio tag as part of your audio tag?
Why not shoot with multiple cameras for V coverage?
I spoke a little about this in the video. To get most cinematic lighting setups, especially for closeups, you need to get the lights and flags very close to the actor. You can't do this if you're shooting the wide at the same time, because all those lights and stands will be in frame. Multi-camera will always be a compromise, and is avoided in most film scenarios because it's an aesthetic associated with TV.
I would like to see that. The nuts and bolts of lighting on set is something I'd like to know more about.
@@Crimsonengine u can get clean plates and mask them on post my opinion
@@gkochanowsky Multiple cameras also take into account budget. It's not as simple as renting a camera/lens package, it's the manpower involved for that extra unit. That could easily go into the thousands of dollars per day just by adding one more camera so sometimes it's not really feasible for low-budget films.
@@BushXCGL Wouldn't it depend? It could be the case of one camera for three days vs. three cameras for one day.
I hope there were examples shown rather than all talking heads
The clips you referenced from the movie Joker I was curious if you think those were cropped in to get those dirty CU singles? I found even making simple cooking videos shooting wider and cropping-in during edit helps immensely to give variety to my shots that I wouldn't have thought I needed otherwise. Do you as a filmmaker do this quite a lot, too? Is that standard industry practice? Or usually, for those large-budget Hollywood movies like Joker, or a Roger Deakins project, do they shoot those as their own take and rarely crop-in? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Hey, great video! I'm a new subscriber to your channel, and I'd really enjoy seeing a video covering audio recording and editing when shooting a conversation... how to mic each person in the best way during a two-way conversation, intercutting between one person and another and audio issues that can come up during editing. When shooting the scene, how do you deal with overlapping audio between both actors from another take if you've shot the entire conversation three times from three different angles? I've been looking all over CZcams for a video that deals with this, and I can't find anything. Anyway, I'm learning a lot from your videos!
ok just saying, I think the colours and look in this footage looks a lot better than what your doing now in the more recent videos. what did u change?
Does someone know how to spell the reference on 4:39?

David Fincher would disagree:)
I'm sure. About which part?
@@Crimsonengine 7:39
www.slashfilm.com/mindhunter-takes/
He is famous for doing the exact opposite:)
@@GregorPQ I think Fincher gets away with this because he has a huge budget to build sets with lighting built into them, and after all, Mindhunter is a TV show, not a film. Nolan has refused to shoot multi camera his whole career.
@@Crimsonengine He does this on his movies, too www.indiewire.com/2013/10/producer-says-david-fincher-is-averaging-50-takes-per-scene-shooting-gone-girl-248969/
Nolan has an unique style and I love his movies.
Highly different approaches, great results from both:)
If actors cannot cope with multiple takes and coverage, then they should stick to theatre where they can just do it once a night......
