  • Internet of Things (IoT) consumers are concerned about the privacy and security of their smart devices, but they cannot do much about it at the time of purchase. This is due to the unavailability of such information when making a purchase decision. Pardis Emami-Naeini, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Computer Science, brings this much-needed transparency to consumers at the time of purchase.
In this talk, Dr. Emami-Naeini will discuss how she developed an informative and usable privacy and security label for IoT devices by conducting a series of studies and incorporating inputs from thousands of consumers and experts. She will also present her recent results on the monetary value of transparency over privacy and security, where I found consumers are willing to pay significant premiums to purchase smart devices with enhanced security and privacy practices.
This research has informed the National Institute of Standards and Technology in the U.S. Department of Commerce (NIST) to label the security and privacy practices of IoT devices, following the White House Executive Order on Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity.
