Neil Peart's intro to "Digital Man" on a 4 piece kit!

- I remember my Neil Peart days, when I had a 12 piece Ludwig classic maple "kit", with 300 cymbals, drums everywhere, and I used that monster for all of my gigs for a while. Ridiculous, but fun once it was set up. When "Signals" was released, I ran out and bought a copy. Neil's drums sounded SO good! And the intro to "Digital Man" really stood out to me. Like so many impressive sounding licks, it was actually quite simple. I always felt like the most creative phrases were the simplest ones. I think this one is a good example of that...

I remember the first time I listened to Rush as a kid. I was blown away by how all the sounds and rhythms seemed to weave around each other. Neil's drumming was never intrusive or Gaudi. It was complex, yet perfectly complemented the guitar, base and vocals. Neil was truly one of the greatest ever, in my opinion.
My youngest brother turned me on to Rush. "Dude, check out this drummer...". I loved it. Thanks for watching!

Bass
He was THE GREATEST!
Geez--I thought I was the ONLY ONE who LOVED this intro!! Thanks for posting that--drum on!!
Oh man! I remember listening to that album on cassette tape. The album had just come out, and I was stunned at how good his drums sounded. That intro grabbed me by the throat. Simple, but epic. And the drum sound... holy... toledo. Thanks for commenting!
I love digital man and the entire Signals album really; it’s an often overlooked gem in RUSH’s catalogue.
I agree. It is a great album. The one and only time I saw them was on their Signals tour. 1983 in Long Beach.
Signals is one of their best and should never be considered a “substandard” effort. Geddy gets sounds from… I’m assuming is his Rickenbacker… throughout that album, I don’t know how he’s getting them
Digital Man is a prime example of this. He might be using a chorus effect on the bridge pickup.
But for some reason I had this notion that he was using the Steinberger. Probably because it’s a “faster” less cumbersome bass than the Rickenbacker. And a song like DIgital Man, you’re going to want a fast bass with an easier to maneuver neck
Signals is their best album, and that's saying something.
Your drums sound spectacular!
Thanks! And thanks for watching.
Those toms in that intro of the studio recording were utterly perfect and what a pattern to play on them!
I LOVED the sound of his drums. I loved the Ludwigs most, but the Tamas and Slingers were right there. His smaller toms were always so bright. I think his snare on Power Windows was my fave. I never did like the DWs. Thanks for watching.
Beautiful sounding drums man, nice job!
Much appreciated !! Thanks for watching.
Finally a video that just gets to the point and is completely useful. Cheers
Thanks! I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Very nice! Short and effective!
Thanks, and thanks for watching!
WOW!!!!! Your Kick drum sounds effin AMAZING!!!!!!
Thanks!! I had a wet behind the ears sound man tell me my drums sounded like s**t last week! Too big and lively. That was a first! Thanks for watching!
Great playing and drum sound
Thanks! Thanks for the link, you guys are VERY GOOD!
Those drums sound incredible.
Thanks! Thanks for watching. 👍
Nice and very tight chops nice full sound
Thank you, and thanks for watching!
I remember seeing a picture of Alex sitting in with a band at his bar The Orbit Room. The drummer had a small kit (4 or 5 piece) and I wondered, could that drummer play EVERY RUSH song using just 2 or 3 toms? Tough with songs like Temples of Syrinx or Witch Hunt... GREAT video, Karl 🙂
Thank you VERY much!!
Your kit is beautifully tuned.
Thank you!
Nice!
Thanks! Thanks for watching.
Great!
Thanks!
Those hertas sound great when you get them up to speed, check out the middle 8 from "Calling all the heroes - It bites" album version. Also " noone knows - Queens of the Stone age. Both preceded by Peart of course... Great Content 👌
I'll investigate... thanks!
Ur snare sounds better than the Bears winning a football game. Killer snare man!
Hah! Thanks! Maybe next year for the Bears (I’ve always loved the Bears).
Oooh toms sound lovely well whole kit does..... single or 2 ply on those heads?
Thanks! The toms are Remo emperor (2ply) top and bottom, snare and kick batters are also 2 ply.
Wow those drums sound great!
Ludwig?
Thanks! Those are my delaminated ludwigs that I have repaired and made good!
I find Shuffles some of the most complex beats to play... I still Struggle with the Half time shuffle... Played properly.. I have the sticking and ghost notes, but adding the kick is just so hard..
Shuffles can be tough because they're "jazzy". Mostly triplet feel. Standby for some tips on shuffles. There are a million ways to shuffle, but there are some rules as well. Thanks for watching!
@@karlplaysdrums Sweet.. Id love to see help on the "Rosanna" Shuffle aka Led Zep Foo in the rain.. thats the one i need to learn..properly

👍
Thanks chief!
Groove is on the hi hat but nice fill
You are correct !
He's using what? Perkas?
Hertas! He used them A LOT!
I love this tune and really enjoy playing with our Rush tribute. I add an extra 16th note to the intro fill but also do it just like the original sometimes:

Love it! I particularly love that you do a nice job with less than 10,000 pieces!
Except after the intro roll he's on the hi hat exclusively, not the ride

You are absolutely correct! I fix it in the linked video. Thanks for the comment.
Sorry, I still haven't heard the intro here. Now with all the times you've heard and played this song, recognize that he did not go back to the snare a second time. Make the most of your 2 toms because he doesn't stray from them in the roll. Sorry to say that the Emperor has no clothes. Do something nobody has done before, hybrid his minimum 3 tom roll between the 2 toms. The snare roll is close! As a Drummer I do love the intro, but love the guitar solo more. CheerZ
Apology accepted! Now, to address your grievances. I have 4 drums, he had (hurts to say "had") 20? 30? I wanted to show that a small drum set doesn't have to be a limiting factor in what songs to play, that's why I go back to the snare. If you watch carefully, I also do an alternate voicing, but I preferred going back to the snare, that way the voicing was more clearly descending. As far as the "two tom" theory, if I remember my math, he does, in fact, use 4 toms, along with the snare (once) to play this intro. One herta on each tom. Regarding your next point, yes! I use emperor heads, usually top AND bottom. I am NOT, however, an actual Emperor. Not as far as I know, anyway, so no apology is necessary, but it is appreciated. I do have plenty of clothes. Maybe I'm being presumptuous. Are you referring to me as the naked emperor, or do you just enjoy using idioms? As far as doing things no one else has done, it's ALL been done before. We stand on the shoulders of giants. It's up to us to take as much of it in as possible, and put it into our own context. The "three tom roll" you refer to, is actually (as far as I can tell) a 4 tom roll, and once again, if you watch the video carefully, you'll see me use an alternate sticking, and it just doesn't sound good to my ear. I'm very happy you thought the snare roll was close. I could have been a contendah!! Thanks for watching, and commenting. I do appreciate it!
Yes, go with idiom. A friend introduced me to Moving Pictures. It did gut me when he died. People can jam/perform/write/tour, but there will never be another RUSH to enjoy again. But now enjoy this existential segue ~ other people kicking ass:

That’s not how it goes
Obviously I don't have enough drums, but the sticking is correct on the intro itself. He moves his left hand to the hihat when playing the shuffle, which I did not do, if that's what you're referring to. Thanks for commenting!
Incorrect intro.
Apparently I don't have enough drums to play it exactly like he did. The sticking is correct, though. Please show me your interpretation, I'd love to see it. Thanks for watching!
Nice interpretation for a small kit. Your sticking and rhythms were spot on.
Thanks! Much appreciate.
Yawn.....
Thanks for watching, and thanks for the comment!! I appreciate it. I’ll have some coffee next time.
