The rapper is a dude named Del Tha Funkee Homosapien. Never made it mainstream, but has some great songs you should check out. I recommend his collab with Dan the Automator called "Deltron 3030"

I wouldn't say he never went mainstream he has a couple hits and the song "if you must" was featured in video games and movies. Notably Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2.
But I see your point. I didn't even know that Del was part of Gorillaz and I bought their first album on release.
Del also featured on plenty of fire shit. He featured on that Wu Tang joint, Preservation. Real hip hop heads know Del is the truth.
Gorillaz were started in 1998 or something like that. Way ahead of their time.

Del the funky Homosapien from the classic rap group Hieroglyphics is the guy rappin.
