Dang, this brings back memories. I retired from Wabtec (GE) three years ago after almost 15 years as the Test Cell Engineer at the Grove City Diesel Engine plant. Listened to EVO's in "skip fire" for countless hours without even noticing. Now it sounds wonderful. Definitely miss the people and the fun of testing big diesel engines. Don't miss the stress.
When I was a kid I loved hearing the grumble of the engines running on the tracks near my house. It was a perfect sleep sound on quiet nights. Thanks

cool... better than the 3 hour long rain sounds to try and sleep to, far rather listen to this!!! Even the distinctive "whoop" sound followed by the compressor kicking on is in there... nice!

Ngl the sound of an idling GEVO or SD40 is the greatest sound ever.
Idling EMD 710s are pretty good,too. It is a sound I remember back when I was trackside, photographing the old Soo Line.

NS 8102 is headed your way it just passed greencastle cam it has 7550 RS5T leader 8102 is second trailing and dash9 also trailing 3rd. NS 8102 is on the 11Z headed south.
Could you loop it for 8 hours without the hissing/blow off noises ? The idling would be awesome to sleep to !! ❤

That's because the ringing bell doesn't always ring while it's idling. That's typically to let you know that your second motor is auto start up/shut down. This one was a single motor when recorded, so no extra motor to trip alarm.

Also, try a speaker with a bit of bass. It's there, but cellphones or cheap speakers may not help with the depth
