Alabama Hills Lone Pine, CA - Rough Roads? What’s there to do?

    The roads in Lone Pine in the Alabama Hills vary from paved or gravel/dirt but flat to VERY bumpy, steep and full of potholes and you’ll see this here. It will also show some of the things you can see in the area. This was our first boondocking experience and we loved it!
    Upon arriving and coming up the 395 from the south, we should’ve turned left on Whitney Portal Road (which, by the way, is the only stop light in Lone Pine!) but we kept going to Movie Rd and turned left. Not a great road for pulling a trailer. We went about a mile or two before I convinced my husband we needed to go back. He very skillfully managed a 3-point turn (well more like 9-point with a 17’ trailer) and we drove back to the 395, turned right and went back to Whitney Portal Road. If you’re a jeeper, by all means go for it, but otherwise I wouldn’t recommend it. Very “washboard” at that end of Movie Road.
    Our campsite was on a road that was very easy to drive BUT if we had gone on any further, it would’ve been really bad! I’d definitely recommend getting out and walking up the road before you try to take your RV!
    The visitor’s center is on the main road (395) and they are very helpful in answering questions. Most businesses were open (outdoor dining and take out) with the exception of the Film Museum which was a real disappointment. I had checked a few weeks earlier and it was open, but then California went into the most restrictive tier so I guess they had to close again. Like most small businesses, especially in tourist cities, they are struggling, so we tried to visit a couple.
    Daytime temps this January went up to the mid 50’s, and nighttime lows were in the low 30’s.
    Since this is public land and not a state or national park, dogs are allowed on all the trails!

    Thanks for sharing! Just exactly what I wanted to look for, road conditions. We are going on a 395 trip in May and I have been wondering how that road is. Looks like no paved road leading to Mobius Arch, right? How far a walk is that from good parking? Thanks again!

    • @exploringnewhites
      @exploringnewhites  Před 3 lety +2

      Correct that the road to Mobius Arch is not paved, but it’s a maintained dirt road so that section is not bumpy and easily driveable. From the 395 you will turn West onto Whitney Portal Road (the only stop light in town), drive about 2.5 miles to Movie Road and turn right. Then about 1.5 miles down the road there will be a fork in the road on the right. Go right and there’s a dirt parking lot. The Mobius Arch trail head is right there at the parking lot and the trail is only a little over 1/2 mile loop total. So overall, it’s easy to get to and an easy hike. Have a great trip!

      @@exploringnewhites Great! Thank you for taking the time to respond. Looking forward to visit the sites there! We will be traveling in our 24' Class C motorhome with no towing. I was a little worried about the roads and not sure if we should do it. Your video really helped!

      @@rebeccachiu725 There were other Class Cs there...probably the best thing to do is grab something that you can see from the road (Movie Road) is fairly flat, then you won’t have to drive down an uncertain road. . Weekdays should be easier. So glad it was helpful, & thanks for subscribing!

      Thanks, the road conditions were the one thing we couldn’t research prior. In fact, initially we went down a pretty bumpy road and had to turn around...with a trailer! Let’s just say we may have scrapped a bush or two! 😬

    What time of the year was this (snow on the ground)? And are fires allowed?

    • @exploringnewhites
      @exploringnewhites  Před 2 lety +1

      It was in January 2021. Yes they get snow! Although that was just a little patch of it except in the higher elevations as you could see on Mt Whitney. Thanks for watching!

    • @exploringnewhites
      @exploringnewhites  Před 2 lety +1

      I didn’t answer your other questions about fires. Yes fires are allowed but I believe you’re supposed to have a California Campfire Permit. This is something you can do online, and I believe you just do it once.
