Moreška - Dance with Swords

A story of love, battle, jealously and power; a tale as old as time - and quite nearly too! Get acquainted with this traditional and ancient sword dance born on the island of Koručla.
Dating back to 1666, Koručla Town which is a place of rich history, legends and traditions, proudly appreciates one of the oldest traditional European dances which is still performed today. This unique display of history uses a dance through swords.
Moreška demonstrates the story of 2 kings in a clash fighting for the love of a Bula maiden. In love with one king, the disgruntled other captures the maiden out of jealousy and thus begins the fight between the 2 armies.
Performed in a series of dances and rhythms, the 7 piece dance ensemble tells the tale where ultimately one is defeated and the maiden is rescued.
This ancient dance survived until the end of the 18th century, however is still performed throughout Dalmatia. Koručla, though, is the only location where the dance is still performed with real swords! ⚔️
