      You're lucky to have grown up in the era of CZcams tutorials - having originally learned guitar the old fashioned way (sheet music, pre-internet/CZcams/Spotify etc) - and now rediscovering after a 20-year break, the difference in rate of progress/learning is insane!

      MOOD. Started learning from Justin at 16, now I'm 23 and he's still THE guitar guy. If I have any guitar question at all, it's almost certain Justin's made a video breaking down the exact topic in an easy-to-understand way. He's the undisputed guitar-teaching GOAT, and potentially the best music teacher of all time.

    I started playing the guitar and singing roughly 45 years ago... So, internet was still science fiction. I tried as good as possible to teach myself based on guitar books and audio cassettes. Over the years I developed mediocre skills that were sufficient to enjoy friends and family. Sometimes when I watch Justin's videos, I wonder how good I could have become at playing the guitar, if internet, YT and Justin Sandercoe would have been available already in the 1970s and early 80s. However, even today (at 60) I still learn a lot from this best guitar teacher on the net. Thanks Justin, and keep on doing this fantastic job!!!

    I found your old video on this subject over the summer, followed the steps, and on the 8th August 2022 sung and played Daughters for the first time. My ten year old daughter came in and started singing with me! I cried tears of absolute joy. Thank you a million times over Justin.

    • @khimaros
      @khimaros Před rokem +1

      @@alpharoo2581 Just keep practicing would be the best advice I could give you. I picked that song because I knew it inside out (quite special for my daughter and I) so I've played it a million times. Justin's comment about where to shift your focus was really the key for me, try to subtly shift from one to the other all the time. That and don't worry about the altered strumming for the second verse, because that's a bit tricky when first getting the hang of it. I never thought I'd be able to do it, so I promise you, you will get it if you keep at it! Good luck!

  • @mister-bland
    @mister-bland Před rokem +8

    That bit about playing the verse again after forgetting the chorus is super important. Something I've come to realize about playing live is that you really need to learn to improv a bit after making a mistake, be it forgetting to move to the next part of the song, or forgetting/mixing up the order of lyrics. Heck that could probably be a lesson on its own, wink wink nudge nudge.

  • @olderendirt
    @olderendirt Před rokem +6

    Something else that might help is to use the record feature on your phone to tape your guitar and learn to sing with that. Then you can hear the chord changes and get a feel for that. Or even practice with some of the karaoke on CZcams.
    Lots of good stuff, Justin. Thanks.

    Fabulous Video Justin!! Great points to help sing and play at the same time. In the end though, you just need to do it! The more times you sing and play the better you get!!!
    Example, when I joined the band I’m in, I just used to play guitar! If I knew the song I would add some backing vocals! As time has gone on I’m singing most of the time, backing and harmonies.
    Starting to add fills and little riffs now, after two years!
    Sing and play in public is the best thing!!!
    Thanks Justin!👏👏👏👏👍👍

    Thank you. Super clear steps to develop the automation process so that (IN MY CASE) I can focus on my vocals which is definately the weaker part of performing for me. Played for decades but only just recently through MUCH encouragement from other to start singing. I can only assume that I have a good voice (I think it sucks!) so Ive started on this frightful part of the journey. I know through practice that my voice will improve. I just wish I had been more serious about the instrument when I was younger.

    Hi Justin,
    Writing to say "THANK YOU!!" For this video. I could write long winded paragraphs on how much this video has helped, but I am gonna keep this short. So far, I haven't had too much trouble playing and singing. Granted, I am not playing complicated pieces of music. Syncopation wasn't something that was a stumbling block for me. Buuuuutttt there is this ONE song that I could never get the hang of. So, I applied the teachings of this video to "The Song" and for the first time ever, I am able to play and sing without faltering. It is a very stripped down version but hey! I'll take it😊😊.
    Thank You again. Have a great day!!
    I should also say, that "The Song" is one of the few songs my husband and I both like and adding, it is also a favorite of his as well....so no pressure right😅.

    Hey Justin, Love this lesson and very helpful as I have joined a Band as Lead Guitarist and I have to sing some of my songs to add to their repertoire and already after my first rehearsal I find that the original song is in a key too high for my voice so the Band leader suggested I go from A to C which worked. When Singing that song I am playing the Lead version as the Rhythm Guitarist is playing the Chords so I am still able to sing the song but when I get to the Solo part I don't need to sing so I can concentrate on the solo and then get back into the Lead Guitar Riff and sing again. But I will start to use your method above, many thanks. I never thought I would be joining a Band in a Retirement Village, and we are all the same age but it is really good fun, Cheers from Downunder in Oz.

    Hey Justin, great tips. One thing that seems to be helping is to try ‘humming the tune’ along with the guitar before starting to sing the words. Words are a bit more complicated and just humming is a slightly lower load on the brain. Once the humming and chords sync up then switching to words feels a tad easier. I’m a beginner and what do I know :) But sharing the tip in case it helps. Thank you again for the work you do. You’re amazing.

    great tips! i finally need to learn to sing b/c my group met some new wonderful people to jam w/ who both play great and sing great. its the first time we've had any competent singers jam, and thats great and all...but now i know for sure well never learn as a group the songs i like playing at home.
    before i never really pushed my mates to learn the songs i like to play, cause i cant sing anyway, and their not really into neil young/GD/etc, so i never bothered trying to get everyone on the same page when trying to sneak in a tune or two during a jam. anyway, my new goal is to finally practice singing and then i can show up to practice n be able to jam some tunes that i want. not that i dont like playing other shit but you know how it is...playing/singing a tune you enjoy here or there w/ your mates would be great.

    Justin, back when you made your "Vincent" video, you mentioned that you couldn't play the fingerstyle pattern and sing at the same time. ... So did you follow your own advice and eventually finally work out the singing and the fingerpicking simultaneously?
    I've always admired guitarists who seemed to be always play flawless complex leads on their guitars while belting out the vocals at the same time. Tom Johnston of the early Doobie Brothers and Robert Cray had this skill. They came as close to "doing two things at the same time" as anyone else I have ever seen. 😇

      Yes, always. You can simplify chords to basic major / minor or even simple power chords and you can simplify strumming patterns too.
      Cheers 😊

    If you wanna get really good try playing some TTNG songs while singing the lyrics.

      @@justinguitar I'm still stumped. The chord progression & strum pattern is so familiar to me but I just can't place it.

    I can't believe singing and strumming at the same time is so difficult, i can strum reasonably well but as soon as i try to sing it all goes belly up lol

    Kinda like playing in the dark 🤔? 'Cuz I've been doing this for a while

      When i started i thought the end goal was to be able to play without looking at the fretboard so i learned my open cords by getting placement right then closing my eyes and trying to recreate it. Did it for a couple months before someone pointed out guitar players are always looking at their instruments lol.

    Tbh I find it easier to sing when playing guitar as it keys the voice.
