I was there in October '11 and I didn't want to leave. We stayed at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. I fell in love with Tropics Bar. I was also married there. Its an amazing place.
Lovely video , and not a homeless person in sight ! Check out Waikiki now, especially in and around Kuhio Beach Park, after sunset or in the early evening and it's a much different story. A sad sight amidst all the affluence!

I was coming here in 1963. They had brought in sand to build up the beach even before that. The sands are shifting and dredged. Nothings changed. That 2 foot wall of sand will level out in time.
FYI... In Waikiki, the International Marketplace will be completely demolished (perhaps in a year) and will be rebuilt with more high-end stores. Diamond Head National Monument is quite a hike! Be very prepared. International Marketplace aka International Market Place in Waikiki is now close. It will open anew in 2016 with all new stores. The base store will be Saks 5th Ave. There will be an addition of 700 parking stalls in the new parking garage.
I asked the guy that owns the concert tee-shirt shop across from the Post Office, "How`d you end up here?" He said, "I was a Chicago fireman and it was time to go back home ...So I called home to see how cold it was and how much pension I had."
Waikiki beach was a great world class beach until the so called sand repenishment 2012. Now, because of the broken coral and rocks you need reef shoes to walk on it. Also, the trucks packed it down as hard as concrete in some places. The sand has washed away near the hard pack causing 2 ft+ cliffs. The beach is ruined.
Havent seen that beach since 1974, I sure would love to go back, it seems like a dream now.

Wow!Waikiki has changed so much but some of the places are still there.I have not been there for almost 20 years.would love to see it again.

I wonder if they are still importing sand from Fiji,,very fine sand for the tourist....
The sand on Waikiki came from Manhatten beach in Ca.
Frankly, it isn't very fine.
