    This is the best instruction by far that I've seen on the pullback! Thanks so much for sharing your tips, Scott.

    Love how you broke down and explained the step. I’ve been going backwards with it which just doesn’t work easily.

    Thank you. Your careful clear instruction far surpasses all the tutorials I have ever found. I am a choreographer of a graded tap syllabus and it is my life's work to improve the instruction and teacher knowledge in South Africa. Please do more tricks and tips.

    Omg I love these and they come so naturally to me but I have such a hard time teaching them because I dont like the method I was shown to teach it but I cant remember how I originally learned them. This definitely will help me explain the technique to my kids!!

      Yoooo, hey thanks man. This video is old and i have more nuance to my approach these days due to student variation, but these fundamentals never change. I need to make an updated version with my new understanding of the step.
      BTW, my respect for you is vast man, I'm so appreciative of your comments. Im a fan, and a follower of the Facebook page Gasps...(I was in the silent support camp for that name).
      My teachers were Richard Yoder and the late Prf. Robert Reed. They are the reason I understand and can teach this step. I only share my take on what they taught me.
      Thanks for the comment man! It means the world!

    Hey, thanks so much for this vid! It's the clearest explanation of a pull back I've ever heard! (I'm a tap beginner and loving it so far) I'm practicing it, hopefully I'll get it right with both feet soon :) Also, I was wondering what good taps you recommend that are better than your regular basic beginner ones. Thanks!!

    wow, thanks!!! i'm tapdancing for a few months now and i love it and it is going well, but this pull back seems just to be out of my reach and because it is in a jump you can't really bring it down to very lowspeed to be able to understand. thats why I love your approach.just now i tried for 5 minutes and just to be able to do the right click-sound with the relaxed foot makes me for the first time understand the idea of it all. cant do the jump yet, but now i feel with practice i will. thanks!!

    Any tips for these tips?
    Seriously. I was excited before I tried it, because I can do pullbacks but I thought I'd master the technics. Now I only know that I suck doing pullbacks XD
    I can't understand yet how can be possible the hit before the jump and I fear knees injuries with those whiplashes. Maybe I'm not the kind of dancer with loose ankles or this video was made with CGI XD

  • @SkillIssueShynes
    @SkillIssueShynes  Před 12 lety

    @JerkyPuck Practice practice practice. Thats the only way to get good at em. If you have any questions or need any more help, let me know, I'll make a video for ya! Keep your ankles loose and practice away! Go in rhythm!

    I still have no idea about the actual mechanics of how the jump is performed so that the foot hits the floor after take off.

      For 27 years I have been a serious dedicated amateur tapper who will never pass advanced beginners or intermediates because I CANNOT LEARN PULLBACKS> so frustrating! I am going to keep practicing. I just now found this, and his technique looked new to me, so I had high hopes, but ALAS! I still can't get it. I am getting a scrape or a double click or a nothing. RATS

    • @SkillIssueShynes
      @SkillIssueShynes  Před 4 lety

      Necro on this, but if you're still on CZcams and getting notifications, the jump has to come from the heels. The moment we place weight into the toes our ankles tense up which is the opposite of what we want. Keep your weight back into the heels more and try not to push off the ground with the toes so they are free to do the actual motion that makes the sound.

    I showed my students this video today and we worked on pullbacks. They were having issues keeping a loose ankle. Any suggestions?

    • @SkillIssueShynes
      @SkillIssueShynes  Před 9 lety +2

      I like to start by actually manipulating the ankle myself. I usually start on the right foot, I lift their leg at the knee with my right hand and place my left on the back of the lower calf, just above the ankle joints. then at the knee I move the leg side to side with some purpose. Remind them to relax the muscles in their leg, to let you do the work of holding up the leg and moving it. eventually their foot will start to flop easily, you should be able to spot the moment they relax.
      Once that happens, I pause, and ask if they felt that? The feeling of space inside the ankle, like all 3 bones in the ankle (tibia, fibula, talus) have air inbetween them and the foot. Whatever their answer, go back and flop the ankle around again. I usually do this 3 or so times per student in the first 4 weeks of tap 1. hope this description helps! I'll try to get a video made showing the process soon!
