    I cut off the younger techs in my shop after like you said the 3 times rule, I watched them borrow my tools multiple times, granted they treated them well and brought them back clean, buy they made no efforts to purchase their own, so that ended my box full of tools feeding another family.

    The way I learned, if you borrowed it TWICE...the third time you Buy. When it comes to the younger Techs borrowing my tools, I tell them that. Also I've worked with good young techs that get me lunch at the same time they borrow my tools!

    Rule #1 ASK, rule.#2 if you break it you bought it, it happens, just own it. #3 the 3x use rule. #4 return it promptly, and CLEAN. #5 return it how the other tech wants it returned....that was never an issue for me, but yea. excellent video

    I play both sides of this, as both the loaner and the benefactor but I follow the borrow it and give it back better mantra. I even offer to help repair/maintain my shop-mates tools that I may not have even damaged. I am personally very tight on the borrow it three times and buy it rules, generally speaking if I run into something I need even ONCE I am 90% likely to need it again so I usually purchase tools that I find that I've borrowed once (and hey, most of the tools in my five-drawer cart get used almost every day). Great vid FRM!

  • @johngibson3594

    Tools are expensive. I never had a problem when I was young tech I always returned the tool clean unbroken and if I did break it I always told them . I also made it a policy to tell them when I return the tool and never ever forgot to say thank you for letting me barrow that tool. Treat others as you want to be treated and show respect as well.

    I am a shade tree putz who loves his cars/toys. I work in the telecom world but I have tons of friends who own shops and I have worked on my personal toys in their shops/ lifts during slow times or after hours. I always show how much I appreciate it ( a case of wobble pops or maybe a bottle of good stuff or....... even a real nice cigar goes a LONG way) and the tools I use are always better than I find them. My point is respect and appreciation is a must!

    We had a guy who was notorious for "borrowing" tools without asking and either not bringing them back or breaking them and trying to hide it. He works in a separate building which really made it a pain in the ass. He was talked to and continued to do it so my solution was this: I made a list titled "TOOLS TAKEN AND NOT RETURNED" complete with clip art pictured of tools and a cartoon thief. I had 2 sections labeled "ITEMS TAKEN" and "LOCATION FOUND & TIME LOST". I hung one copy on my tool box and one at the service desk where anyone could see it. He was mad but I told him if he took it down I'd make it a size larger each time. So he if he didn't want the sign or the list of tools to get any bigger hed best quit while he was ahead and just start returning/replacing tools immediately. That did the trick

      I'm looking at the DeWalt connected batteries for some of my stuff. It is an app that I have that will allow you to monitor your DeWalt tools/batteries. One of the features is the "Lend" function. This allows you to lend a tool "hey I just need it for an hour" and to shut down the tool/battery after a time preset by you. The battery will not even recharge without the owner's consent!

    My rule of thumb is this, if you have to borrow it more than twice YOU need to buy one because after the third use I'll say no and you can let the boss know you don't have the tool to complete the job. I understand new techs need time to build up tools, but you have to also make sure you're not the one providing tools for everyone because they don't wanna spend the money and become dependent on you.

      I had a service manager tell me to loan a scan tool to a D tech once. Told him when he pays my tool bill he can decide who uses my tools. He literally threatend to fire me. Thing was at this location was a certain line, and the recon shop. In the recon shop we worked directly for the head manager of all the service deptments in the auto group. I simply dialed my phone , asked ' Mike' do I work for you , or do I work for ' Joe', he said you work for and report directly to me , put 'Joe ' on the phone. He literally came to our location, spanked Joe in front of all of the recon shop, and the techs that worked for Joe and explained to all these new techs how things work . It was pretty nice to be taken care of that way.

    As a teenager I came up the greased pole by...
    Being confronted with a mechanical problem
    Identifying said problem and then learning the procedure to repair it
    Buy/rent the tools that I needed but did not already have and do the job
    I came out of each and every mechanical catastrophe with more smarts, more tools and more money still in my pocket and of course, the joy at having done it for myself (and can again when I need to).

    Ask politely, clean it, return it in better condition, and thank them. Most guys will respect you for that and continue lending. If you keep using it, buy your own or save up for it. They will respect you more. People borrow my tools a lot and it does get annoying if they have to borrow very common tools all the time. They return them dirty or broken, my box is off limits. But I'm pretty generous. If it's a specialty tool that isn't a daily use item, you get more leeway.

    Nothing wrong with loaning or borrowing tools so long as it isn’t basic hand tools. Our shop has a few highly experienced techs with specialties in different areas and this late in the game. Most of us would rather loan and borrow than spend money unnecessarily. But these tools are typically specialty/ not daily use type of tools. Specialty pullers, oddball sizes thread repair tools or extractors

    My dad would get mad when we asked to use his tools. Always put em back,always asked,always wiped em down. Different when he needs to borrow my tools and I find them broke covered in oil in the rain. Thank fuck for a lifetime warranty.

    what about if all I do is oil changes and change tires. Sometimes I need to borrow tools just to remove the plastic underneath. should i buy my own> the shop provides a sockets and impact gun and socket to remove the drain plug.

    • @flatratemaster
      @flatratemaster  Před 7 lety +3

      Depends completely on your situation, if you are provided tools, they should probably provide tools to remove the underbody panels, or if your coworkers are ok with you borrowing tools and you follow their rules on use, you should be ok with just borrowing.
      FYI, if you are planning on making the jump to being a full tech not a bad idea to start getting some tools as you can afford them
      You can watch my video on starting tools for a tech to get an idea what you may need

    I have had junior techs borrow my tools with no intention of buying their own. They have even brought them back damaged. When I ask about it they tell me "just go buy another one". I quit letting them borrow tools. Then the boss ask why I am not letting them use my tools? I tell the boss about what is happening and he tells me to let them use my tools. I then tell the boss he can buy my tools from me and and they can then use his tools. That didn't fly. He then made them buy their own tools.

  • @cazsomething9433

    I dont mind letting another tech barrow a tool for the most parts. But my scan tools are off limits. If they really do need it I'll stop what I'm doing and go do it my self. After watching a couple tech's place the dongle on the screen that was enough even after yelling at them and then do it again next time. Luckily I have screen protectors on them so nothing was scratched. between just 2 scan tools in my chest is almost 10 grand and the shop I work for doesn't have a scan tool and refuses to supply on for the lower techs. Loved the video man made me laugh!

    what a subject. its give and take but dont make it one way . the last shop i worked in a lot of the specialty tools the shop wouldnt buy i did. no one touched them period, when the factory rep came to check the shop my box got locked. too many techs do like i did.ya buy that tool but in the end the dealer is the one that made out. what i lent out came back clean and in its place and if you cant remember which drawer it came from leave it on the ledge and tell me

  • @vintagebikewurx3730
    @vintagebikewurx3730 Před 6 lety

    3 times it's a good rule. Give a heads up borrowing and returning. If it gets put back in the wrong drawer it might as will be gone. Just put it on top of the box unless your 100% sure witch drawer it was in.

    I remember having to borrow tools, and before I returned them they were SUPER clean and lubed...I had to borrow a couple of large truck tools (that I would later purchase) from the same guy and they would come back so clean that he would joke "go ahead borrow some more...".
    You forgot one thing...one which will drive me thru the roof is when I loan a tool to someone and they mistreat/mis-use them! I had a guy use my Snap-On screwdriver as a chisel once, one guy beat on my S/O ratchet....Those guys got an instant "Hey Mother F'er" and banned from my box.
    Good vid for the new guys...

    The fact you HAD to make a vid about this is Crazier than the elusive “common sense”. I borrow a tool, whatever it is, I wait for the mechanic to finish what they’re doing, I ask with a “Please”, make sure tool is better than I was given it, and hand it to them, with a “thank you.” I’m also the first set of “extra hands” they need to hold something. If your shop can’t run like that, it isn’t your permanent shop. I agree 100% about busted tools- you broke it, tell me. Don’t let me find out I took a ticket, then the tool I need is busted... that’s a d*ck move, no nice way to say it. If I break it, money is in hand by days end. Thats how it should be.
