    Topping tulips using a homebuild self-propelled topping machine with two 1.50mtr wide Van Dijke topping machines of Vido Fleur of Achthuizen, The Netherlands. The flowers are topped so that the plant is putting all his energy into the development of the bulbs.

    Growers top the tulips about three weeks after blooming for two reasons: First, they must remove the flowers before the petals fall in the foliage. If they were to ignore this step, the dropping petals would cause the tulip plants to rot and die down before the new bulb(s) had a chance to grow. Topping also removes the seedpod from the plant, which if left would rob some of the energy that would otherwise go to the new bulb. Six to eight weeks after removing the blooms, growers usually dig the tulips and the process of drying, cleaning, grading, and temperature treating takes place.

    Sigh.......google translate people. Description; "Tulips heads with a self-built self-propelled cup machine with two Van Dijke K150 Koppers two beds of 1.50m heads. Behind the machine is provided with caterpillars and is driven by a motor that is derived from a Jamafa sprout picker. The flowers are headed so the plant is stabbing all his energy into the development of the sphere. if the flower is not headed than the plant puts all his energy into the form of seed which is not the intention."
    In short, they cut them for the purpose of selling the bulbs, not the flowers.

      Leo Iezzi Why are they wasting all the flowers? Seems stupid to plant a bulb to get a bulb when they could get bulbs from flowers. Why not make something out of the flowers instead of just leaving them on the ground to rot?

      @BogdanSilviuAron Před 9 lety +2

      Leo Iezzi Well, I'm not english but I understood the original translation. However if you want to be finicky, keep in mind that for plants, animals and things you should use IT (ITS) not HE or SHE (HIS/HER), and what do you mean by "the sphere"!? BULB is the correct term! ... Anyway, I appreciate your effort ;) . cheers!

      The tulips are being grown for the bulbs, the bulbous root mass in the ground, which are then sold to be planted in gardens. Removing the flower allows the plan to better develop the bulb rather than the flower. I agree though that is is kinda unfortunate.

Only keep select seeds to eventually replace old stock and repeat the process. Basic Farmernomics really.
