    Symptom: Wheel rubbing on the rotor or not turning and brake lever is also hard to pull.
    Fault: Brake system overfilled. By opening the bleed screw by two turns and pushing pistons back in the caliper. With the bleed screw open, releases pressure in the system and a small amount of fluid is released, when pistons are pushed back

    Ah HA! You did it for me! Simple. The weather temp went from 40s to 80 in one day - welcome to Upstate NY, USA! The hot day temp caused the fluid to expand (a guess) and the brakes to be pretty darned tight against the rotors. I loosed the bleed screw on brake handle, pushed the piston in and tightened up the screw. Vuala. Thanks! You save me a service call to my bike shop!

    Great video I knew there had to be a good honest mechanic out there and I personally appreciate it very much as this is the second time these brakes have done this on a Cannondale Scalpel with extremely low milage due to a broken back a couple of months after I bought the bike but I only used it on a trail three times before I decided to play Humpty Dumpty and they have yet to put me back together again but I never give up. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge need more people like you on this planet Sincerely Ed R

    Thanks man for the clear advice. As others have mentioned, you don't need a special tool to prise the brakepads apart - just a thin piece of metal (a few mm thick) to get it started, a screwdriver, or some kind of blade. Fluid leaks out as described, but its negligible

    my two Salsa bikes with Avid hydraulic brakes had exactly this problem, followed the procedure here (though I was too cheap to buy the $20 park tool - I just used a screwdriver), and I now have two working bikes - Thanks! If they fail again, I'll be replacing them with TRP Spykes - I'm done with hydraulic headaches.

    What did you release up by the lever? I didnt quite understand that part? I have this issue, I pushed the pistons/pads apart with a tire lever, put it back together and wheel spins fine. Then I pulled the break again and the pads clamped down and stuck again. I’m must have missed something

  • @dominicbritt

    Still recommend a bleed - fluid pressure is high because of moisture in the DOT fluid.

  • @Tilburger72

    My specialized with Avid breaks has now the same issue with the rear brake. I don't have the special tool you use to release the breakpads. What's the risk if I still try this?
    Do you also have an explanation why this happens? A local shops wants to replace the 'breakset' which is the definite solution. Do you agree on this?
    Thanks for your great video

    • @orrprosegaming7851

      if you havent done this already or replaced them what happens with these brakes (and srams) is the fluid gets water in it or expands. same issue with mine and if you want a temp fix just loosen the banjo bolt with the bike on its side and let some of the pressurized fluid come out

      If is more than 2 years old (I think it is) inspect the leavers for any leaks or corrosion. Then bleed the brakes, inspect the colour of the brake fluid. If black or has black particles floating in the fluid, I would suggest buying a new brake. Make sure you follow the correct way to blead the brakes!!!! i.e push the pistons fully home first (You will find that releasing the bleed screw as video will let you do this. Good luck, let me know how you get on?

      Hi James, could be a number of things. I take it you have cable operated disc brakes? 1. Check cable is not corroded and works freely. 2. Caliper is centered on the rotor. 3. Disc pad is over adjusted. Maybe I will do a video on this next time cable disc brakes comes in the work shop.........

      That's with Avid brakes? And is that with your bike being used or just standing in the heat? Try DOT 5.1 Fluid. Or you may need an upgrade to Shimano or Magura that use mineral oil.

    • @CycleTechUK
      @CycleTechUK  Před 6 lety

      I know the heat in Oz, I was driving up to Coober Pedy and had the air con condenser fan on to help keep the engine cool, the heater on and had to stop every hour, lift the bonnet and let the engine call down and top the carb up with fuel as it had evaporated. Big storm in Coober Pedy that night and cooler the next day only 35°c lol

    I have these. NEVER BUY THEM! After a year of never going on a ride without having some major problem on the trail, I’m getting rid of them. They will lock up at random times. Your friends will have fun using mechanical brakes and you’ll be left by the side of the trail wondering why you bought them.

      Use the rotor and carefully pull/push towards the pads with the bleed screw slightly undone. This will allow the pads to go back

    • @sjlg74
      @sjlg74 Před 4 lety

      Hi thanks for the reply. After a bit of thought I tried this method, which gave me enough space to get the wheel off. I then slowly inserted the bleed block with the bleed screw slightly open to get the pistons back in the correct position. I’m just waiting for new oil so I can re-bleed the system.
