Symptom: Wheel rubbing on the rotor or not turning and brake lever is also hard to pull.
Fault: Brake system overfilled. By opening the bleed screw by two turns and pushing pistons back in the caliper. With the bleed screw open, releases pressure in the system and a small amount of fluid is released, when pistons are pushed back
Tools:
Torx T10
Disc brake piston press
Brake cleaner

6 years on but you just saved me a trip to the bike shop , I thank you for that sir
An hour trying to sort my son's bike out with same issue, watched your video 60 seconds later all fixed, brilliant ....Thank you
The most straight forward video I've seen on this annoying issue - thanks!
I had the bleed kit out ready to get into it, but I found your video and had it sorted in 5 minutes. Thanks for the video!
Haven’t ridden my bike for over a year because of this fault😞. Such an easy fix too, I’ll be doing this tomorrow! Big thanks!
Thanks for this. This is definitely what has happened to mine. Both front and rear stuck. High pressure at the levers. Just ordered brake caliper press
Thank you so much, I have very minimal experience working on today's bikes. However, I am in Tahoe with minimal tools and my brakes were stuck on. I just totally fixed it based on this video! Thanks again!!!
Great video! Got my rear brakes fixed because of this video. Thank you!! 🙌👏👌
Thanks for sorting me out too - worked like a treat!
Wow, this helped a great deal! Thank you from Arizona.
Saved me a lot of money. I was told that I needed to replace my whole brake unit because of this simple problem. Thank you very much.
Don't use their services ever again
Thanks -that got me out of a jam! Had new pads fitted a few rides ago, all okay. Went to ride and the wheel was almost locked in the front brake. Followed your advise and was able to free it off. Thanks 👍
Thanks! You saved me a 3 weeks wait at the bike shop...
Great video, sorted out my locked front brake problem. Many thanks.
This man is a genius! saved me a bunch of time!
Ah HA! You did it for me! Simple. The weather temp went from 40s to 80 in one day - welcome to Upstate NY, USA! The hot day temp caused the fluid to expand (a guess) and the brakes to be pretty darned tight against the rotors. I loosed the bleed screw on brake handle, pushed the piston in and tightened up the screw. Vuala. Thanks! You save me a service call to my bike shop!
Same thing just happend to me in northern germany...fucking annoying xD
That happened to me also. A week after riding the bike and it being perfectly fine both brakes were locked up like this. As with you the weather had been in the 90s suddenly.
This helps me alot. My bike does this not to full brake lock up, about once a year. So thank you for sharing.
Great video I knew there had to be a good honest mechanic out there and I personally appreciate it very much as this is the second time these brakes have done this on a Cannondale Scalpel with extremely low milage due to a broken back a couple of months after I bought the bike but I only used it on a trail three times before I decided to play Humpty Dumpty and they have yet to put me back together again but I never give up. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge need more people like you on this planet Sincerely Ed R
Thanks man for the clear advice. As others have mentioned, you don't need a special tool to prise the brakepads apart - just a thin piece of metal (a few mm thick) to get it started, a screwdriver, or some kind of blade. Fluid leaks out as described, but its negligible
This helped me ALOT... Thank you very much 👌
works like a charm! thanks mate!
my two Salsa bikes with Avid hydraulic brakes had exactly this problem, followed the procedure here (though I was too cheap to buy the $20 park tool - I just used a screwdriver), and I now have two working bikes - Thanks! If they fail again, I'll be replacing them with TRP Spykes - I'm done with hydraulic headaches.
simple, facil y sin complicaciones. excelente explicacion :)
Thank buddy. Work fine for me!
This was helpful in my case. Thank you
Maestro! Thank you so much.
Thanks for sharing☺️
Thank you so much for this! Instant fix.
Thx mate !!!
That was easy!!! Just needed a tiny release of fluid. Didn’t even bother touching pads
Thanks you
Thank you!
What did you release up by the lever? I didnt quite understand that part? I have this issue, I pushed the pistons/pads apart with a tire lever, put it back together and wheel spins fine. Then I pulled the break again and the pads clamped down and stuck again. I’m must have missed something
Exactly...he says "this thing"... doesn't even say exactly what or show it...then wraps it up. Grrr
He relese some brake fluid and a very little more when he pushes the pads back in. Sounds like it has too much in it but I don't know how's that even possible
Great job mate, just unsure what bolt you undid at the handle? assuming you opened the bleed screw?
Just save my ride today! Thanks for sharing!
Great to hear
Every year faithfully the rear brake on my bike with Avid Elixrs locks up like this after winter storage! I will try this method instead of a complete bleed!
I love the brakes when they work... But man they're a PITA compared to Shimano lol.
AWESOME ! 🏆
damn needed this video thanks
You da man!
How do you prevent air from entering when you open the bleed screw
Presumably the increase in pressure/volume is due to the fluid being in poor condition? Moisture ingress etc..
Still recommend a bleed - fluid pressure is high because of moisture in the DOT fluid.
My specialized with Avid breaks has now the same issue with the rear brake. I don't have the special tool you use to release the breakpads. What's the risk if I still try this?
Do you also have an explanation why this happens? A local shops wants to replace the 'breakset' which is the definite solution. Do you agree on this?
Thanks for your great video
if you havent done this already or replaced them what happens with these brakes (and srams) is the fluid gets water in it or expands. same issue with mine and if you want a temp fix just loosen the banjo bolt with the bike on its side and let some of the pressurized fluid come out
So whatd he do? Push the pads back? Big whoop
What are you loosening and tightening up? Your hand was in the way and couldn't see
The bleed screw
My rear brake works for 5 seconds and then it just goes down to my grip is there a fix to this
Mine have always done this I assumed because it was absorbing water best to replace fluid sometime
If is more than 2 years old (I think it is) inspect the leavers for any leaks or corrosion. Then bleed the brakes, inspect the colour of the brake fluid. If black or has black particles floating in the fluid, I would suggest buying a new brake. Make sure you follow the correct way to blead the brakes!!!! i.e push the pistons fully home first (You will find that releasing the bleed screw as video will let you do this. Good luck, let me know how you get on?
@@CycleTechUK just waiting for some new pads to arrive from China 😁 1st things 1st I guess
Seems hard to get it just right. I tried that and then the brakes became too lose. So I removed the wheel and squeezed the brake a few times and then too tight again... damn it.
Followed this advice but after I tightened the pressure screw again, there was no pressure in the system. No braking at all. Please explain what’s happened. Seems like the system needs bleeding now. Annoying
Same happened to me! What did I do wrong?
@@danpilzr My problem, I think, is that I undid the lower pressure screw instead of the upper one on the lever.
Did you get it sorted? The same thing just happened to me. I'm wondering if air got into the system.
I’m having a similar problem with my rear brake but I don’t have hydraulics. Any suggestions?
Hi James, could be a number of things. I take it you have cable operated disc brakes? 1. Check cable is not corroded and works freely. 2. Caliper is centered on the rotor. 3. Disc pad is over adjusted. Maybe I will do a video on this next time cable disc brakes comes in the work shop.........
Cycle Tech UK Thankyou for the help!
My bike has this issue but I can’t push the pads out enough
Did you follow the procedure?
You have to relese the pressure in the break
Why would this happen? How would you suddenly have excess oil in the reservoir?
Just happened to me recently, but not as bad. I accidentally pulled the front brake lever with the wheel removed, and now my front brake drags.
Stefan Lowe Pistons where never pushed fully back when it was bleed/topped up. Could have been like that from new.
Cycle Tech, this makes sense, and this tip helped me. I just drained a little bit of oil from the lines, and all back to normal. Thanks!!!
That's with Avid brakes? And is that with your bike being used or just standing in the heat? Try DOT 5.1 Fluid. Or you may need an upgrade to Shimano or Magura that use mineral oil.
I know the heat in Oz, I was driving up to Coober Pedy and had the air con condenser fan on to help keep the engine cool, the heater on and had to stop every hour, lift the bonnet and let the engine call down and top the carb up with fuel as it had evaporated. Big storm in Coober Pedy that night and cooler the next day only 35°c lol
Its hapenning to me all the time,i got the brakes fixed the other day,and next day morning same shit????Why is that happening??
It could be the brakes need a Piston Service kit... If you are having hot weather, then do a piston service kit replacement.
I have these. NEVER BUY THEM! After a year of never going on a ride without having some major problem on the trail, I’m getting rid of them. They will lock up at random times. Your friends will have fun using mechanical brakes and you’ll be left by the side of the trail wondering why you bought them.
Hi I've got the same problem. However it's jammed on that tight, I can't get the front wheel off. 😡 Any suggestions? Thanks
Use the rotor and carefully pull/push towards the pads with the bleed screw slightly undone. This will allow the pads to go back
Hi thanks for the reply. After a bit of thought I tried this method, which gave me enough space to get the wheel off. I then slowly inserted the bleed block with the bleed screw slightly open to get the pistons back in the correct position. I’m just waiting for new oil so I can re-bleed the system.
