How Long does it take for a Crossbow Arrow to fall back down? - ZĂĄbava
Do it at night, but attach a small glow stick on the end. Youâll be able to see it rather easily.
Growing Answers it wonât work the glow stick would be heavy
they have led arrow nocks
Nathan Stautzenberger yeah that'd work. The glowstick would probably fall off anyways.
I try some time ago: 36 pounds longbow and 32' arrow with a 10cm glowstick attache with scotch tape... You spect a tracer, but no, barely see the arrow. Nocks with a small led works much much better
Break the glowstick and pour it on the arrow

Given all the kinetic energy of the arrow (1/2mv^2) goes into potential energy (mgh) (so assume no air resistance or wind or anything) and set them equal to each other (1/2mv^2 = mgh) the masses cancel and you end up with v^2/2g = h. Given velocity is 400 FPS (121.92 m/s) and gravity is 9.8 m/s^2 we end up with 758.39 meters (2488.2 feet)! Wouldnât have gone quite that high with air resistance but theyâre pretty aerodynamic and wouldnât have too much drag. 2000 feet at a minimum, could have shot a Cessna out of the air!
Please do my math hw.
Prxsence this is basic physics, but as an engineer I am also good at mathematics. Hit me with a question
can u type in english please?HAHAHA
Michael H. What is the square root of These Nuts? Cough PI
Michael H. No disrespect intended but you make light of the air resistance and as such your estimate is way off, if I can explain, if you neglect air resistance then we can use the standard equations of motion, and so if we calculate the time to reach your 758.39 meters it would take 12.44 seconds, which then also means it takes 12.44 seconds to fall back to earth, a total of 24.88 seconds. A fact we do know is it only took approx 18 seconds total. Also by not using air resistance it would mean the bolt was doing 121.92 m/s on impact which wouldn't happen. In reality the maximum height reached is closer to 395 meters. It's very likely it could go a bit higher than that as there is definitely a transition point where air resistance changes from quadratic to linear as the bolt slows down. So the difference with and without drag is approx 52%.

Flight Duration: 19s
Horizontal Distance: 75m
Initial/Final Velocity: 336km/h
Max Height: 442m
Horizontal Velocity: 14.2km/h
Launch Angle: 87.57 degrees
Of course that's in a vacuum, real world height would be lower.
So it's good enough to take out Santa's reindeers at cruising altitude, is what you're saying?
Time=18 seconds
Max height= 396.9.2 meters (1302ft)
Max speed (launch/impact speed)=88.2m/s (289.37mph)
*Explanation*
So I timed 18 seconds flat. Sue me if you disagree. I'm not looking at air resistance so I don't care about weight. The crossbow says it's going 400fps (121.92m/s) but when I mathed it out (Vf=at+Vi or Vf=-9.8·18+121.92) at the end of 18 seconds I got -54.48 m/s and since objects hit the ground at the speed they leave the ground this is not nearly fast enough. If it had really launched at 121.92m/s it would've taken 24.8 seconds to hit the ground again. So just using time I determined everything else. To get a real launch speed I plugged in numbers when at the peak falling to the ground (using Vf=at+Vi) knowing impact velocity is launch velocity and got -88.2m/s. This means Edwin's crossbow is lying to him by more than 100fps but we'll blame that on the bolt or something. With these good numbers I solved for maximum height using Xf=.5at^2+Vit+Xi, again using time as 9 seconds to the top (Xf=(0.5·-9.8·9^2)+(88.2·9)+0). This gave me 396.2 meters. And thats all the numbers I got.
You are correct, sort of. Objects return to earth at the same speed they left, but only in a vacuum. And it can even be close when not in a vacuum if the object is aerodynamic and if the velocity never exceeds terminal velocity. Problem is, that bow really does shoot arrows in the 400 fps range, which is far above terminal velocity which means it will slow at a very fast rate. And on the way down, the arrow cannot pass terminal velocity, so the trip down takes longer than the trip up.
Does it hit the ground as fast as it left? What if it left faster than terminal velocity, like a bullet?
@@steveparis5766 More or less.
We don't really know the initial speed because the 400 fps is just some velocity range manufacturers info.
Now i admit i don't know much about crossbows but the tip Edwin used looks to be significantly heavier than the normal field tip or that square sharp thing he used before.
That additional weight is going to reduce initial velocity by an unknown amount.
If Edwin did a chronograph measurement with that tip we could even approximately calculate the terminal velocity from the time it took to get back.
But with the info we have right now IMTHEDARKNIGHT's numbers are about the best we can do.
@@steveparis5766 I am trying to remember my old physics now.Gravity pulls at 10meteres per sec per second in a vacuum??? I am not cheating but trying to work this out .I presume the bolt slowed at the same rate whilst climbing slowing immediately it left the slide.?The maths onced it turns to earth are easy but determine max altitude is challenging because it is fired at x meters per second,but starts it descent from a standstill???? Wish I hadn't watched this now!!!!!!!!!!Cheers,Len,UK.
it is stated near the end the total weight is 35.6394 grams ( or 550 grain ) we have a time of 19 sec. we know that at max half of that is up in direction part of the time is spent @ 0, so about 8 or 9 seconds to come back down it could have fallen 313.81 m +or- a bit ( still between 300 to 400 m ) creating about 110.02 to 138.72 joules @ impact ( 81.15 to 102.32 foot pounds )

Velocity at 400 ft/per second would be approximately 272 mph. Given a relative humidity of 28.21hg and a travel speed of 270mph without given wind resistance and deducting weight of bolt and corresponding drag and time of 11 seconds to reach peak altitude, it went approximately 2,375.67 ft before the drag overcame the momentum to where it regained a peak velocity of 120.1mph and another 9 seconds to reach earth and I just made that up..

Assuming it took 19 secs to travel up and down in total, it must have taken 19/2=9.5 secs to travel just up (or down). Using kinematics, time of ascent is equal to root(2h/g) where h is the maximum height attained and g is the acceleration due to gravity. Taking g=9.8 m/s sq, h comes out to be 442.225 m. Also, time of ascent equals u/g where u is the initial velocity of projection. So, u turns out to be 93.1 m/s. With an average lightweight arrow weighing about 0.019 kg, that's equivalent to an initial momentum of 1.7689 kg m/s. Now, for a tip of diameter 1mm, we have an arrowhead of area of contact equal to 0.79 sq mm. That's a pressure of about 22391.14 Pa. Impressive.

Nice, thanks.
It's cool that you actually took the time to figure it out but what you took away from that is.... Rather unsettling lmao. Of course a cross bow shooting 400fps can kill a man point blank. Magnify that with gravity.... No doubt. But that was not the point.

Then hide under the truck instead of inside it
Solution for asked Question..
Here, Initial Speed(U)= 400FPS which is nothing but 121.92 into Meter Per Second, let's take 122m/s to make calculation easy,
Since we know that, this Crossbow Bolt would achieve its maximum height when final Velocity becomes Zero. After that it would start falling down.. let's say our Final velocity is (V) and it will be Zero at Maximum height.
Formula says V^2 = U^2 + 2AS ,
Where A = gravitational Pull that is -9.8 m/s
And S is displacement which will be equivalent to its Maximum height.
0^2= 122*122 + 2*(-9.8)*S
19.6S = 122*123
S= 759.38 meter
S=~ 760 meter(Approximated Value)
Awsome
@Gaurav Kumar Gaurav Kumar .
Hey Bro Time of Ascent will not be equivalent to time of Decent, while falling down from its Maximum height will have different time.
And while Achieving its maximum height will have Different too.
đđđđđ
Can you help my kids with their math homework!đŹ
Gaurav Kumar it will not be, thereâs uneven air resistance and the bolt mightâve reached terminal velocity but for year 9 purposes, it is not considered or else there will be the need to calculate the different drag coefficients because of differing airspeed. And during the ascent, energy is lost so, the speed of the bolt leaving the crossbow and the speed of the bolt when hitting the ground would be different.
Take your highschool physics with a grain of salt, it is not always true, and it only happens in a perfect world where everything can be calculated precisely
