    You did a great job explaining everything. I’ve been painting furniture for about 2 years with chalk paint so I have a few tips to help anyone that wants to try this.
    1. Use shellac to prime- this will help you save paint and prevent wood staining from showing through the final coat.
    2. After the first coat, you can thin out the paint ( In a separate tub - use one of those Chinese soup containers with a small amount of paint and water) to help extend the dry time and for smoother coverage. I would also recommend brushing all in one direction using the flow of the wood grain
    3. If you have a high traffic surface I would also recommend using lacquer to prevent chipping and scratches. The lacquer is also easier to clean and you won’t have to reapply every 6 months like you do with wax.

      Yes, absolutely. Most of the chicks on CZcams showing how to chalk paint don’t know what the heck they’re doing.

  • @peggytravels793
    @peggytravels793 Před 6 lety +101

    The spot is called bleed through and you should spray shellack on top before you apply another coat of paint.
    I clean all my pieces with a TSP cleaner mixed with water and this was suggested by my Annie Sloan dealer. That will help remover any spray furniture polish and build in dirt.
    I pour my paint into another container with a good sealing top. I love glass bowls the rubber lids. After the first coat, I mix my Annie Sloan paint with a bit of water, makes for a much smoother coat, really helps with brush strokes. I have never had to put more than 2 coats with small touch ups in some places.

    @catherinezenovich5483 Před 6 lety +94

    For a really smooth finish, lightly sand with a fine (400grit) sandpaper and you will end up with a silky smooth surface which feels lovely. You can also slightly dilute the top coat so that it creates less brush marks. If you have some brown discolouration leaching through your paint, you should have primed the piece with a blocking primer such as Zinzer. Stained wood will always leach through light paint and some pieces of furniture may have stains which can only be blocked by priming.

      I also heard to dilute the paint with a little water and to use 200 grit sandpaper. You might have to apply multiple coats the thinner the paint is diluted. You can also lightly sand in between coats if you want.

    Just a thought - I think it would be really good to use 1 coat of primer (like Zinsser BIN - Water Based) - that would cover and seal and provide a fairly solid white base. Then you can do the Chalk paint coat. I think foam roller would be good too for smoother coverage. Then cover with a top coats (x2 or x3) with sanding between.

    Yes-- dilute your second coat. But don't dilute your can of paint. POur the required amount into another small container (like dollar tree food containers) THEN add water - a teaspoon at a time until you get a good consistency. THen clear wax. IF you are using dark was, make sure to put clear wax on first then you can do the dark wax and then wipe it off. IF you have too much dark wax on your piece, rub a little clear wax to use as an 'eraser' then wipe it off again

  • @kaybonette
    @kaybonette Před 6 lety +46

    The discoloration is tannin from the wood. Please don't keep painting over it. Spray it with shellac or a clear coat let it totally dry and then paint over it. Also when your paint is not totally dry and you paint another coat over it you are pulling off the undercoat and working harder. Let it dry first. Always paint in the direction of the grain.

    • @kimcox66030
      @kimcox66030 Před 5 lety +1

      Annie Sloan herself says just slap it on going any old direction. Watch her painting videos. The shellac tip is good one though. It works over gel stain too, to prevent stain lift when putting a brushed on top coat over the stain.

    • @Kimodoll__.
      @Kimodoll__. Před 5 lety

      @@kimcox66030 Is this just an issue with painting lighter colors onto darker pieces? I was thinking last night adding my second coat that perhaps I should have sanded first as the wood and stain were darker. I also had to use wood putty in one spot. I am thinking of sanding it all and using a darker tan color and not the light grey. And then use the spray water on the top layer. I will learn eventually. :-)

    I worked on antiques that were up to nearly 400 years old and have a couple pieces in museums, so not much of what I do will work with this kind of stuff. But, try soaking hardware in amonia for 10-20 minutes and rub with 0000 steel wool if it is brass. Also try washing the furniture with the same steel wool and Soilmax(used to be Soilax) and it will work way better than just water and doesn't need to be rinsed off. Lastly, never try to fix or refinish an actual antique as it will ruin it and drop it's value a lot. This is not a real "antique" since it is a mass production piece likely from the 50's or there abouts. But some antique furniture can be worth thousands or even millions and if you damage the original finish or even original glue it can drop the value 50% or more and to have a professional fix a damaged piece that has had it's original finish damaged can cost a few thousand dollars and still not bring back the full value.

      Thank you for clarifying that this is not a real antique. So many people get super upset when I paint these, but just because it was made last century doesn’t make it valuable. I love it the way it is, and that is all that matter!

      I can't say what exactly makes an antique, but mass produced and machined pieces like this don't normally make the cut for me. I think once you hit the Art Deco period(which doesn't meet my standard stated earlier) I start to view things as an antique, but that is probably because it is my favorite furniture personally. I have had the privilege of seeing some amazing pieces from private collections and you haven't lived until you have sat in a $1 million chair from 1670's made in Italy with hand made mahogany veneer. I was terrified as it was one of the first pieces I got to work on as the lead.

    I loved the video and the end result. Thank you for repeating yourself. It helped. I am new to chalk paint and very excited to paint an older wardrobe using your method. Also your shop is beautiful. All the colors made the best back ground for that cabinet. I'm looking forward to your next video.

    The beauty of the Annie Sloan paint is that it goes on any surface. I have just thought it would be a much better idea to prime dark wooden surfaces first with a cheap white paint so that you need less coats of the more expensive chalk paint.

    Not sure if you knew but this sewing cabinet has a sliding top that turns into a lowered section when the sewing machine is raised. You have to use the lever on the side while pulling up and sliding the front top piece over.

    There are other good quality chalk paints with the quality of Annie Sloan (which I also like): Dixie Belle, Amy Howard, Country Chic are some. Walmart carries Waverly, which goes on a bit thinner, but end result is good. After reading reviews I found that people didn't like the chalk paints they were finding at the big box stores, such as Valspar and Rust-oleum (although one of the comments below said they like Rust-oleum's chalk paint). I haven't tried those myself, but after painting my bathroom cabinets with regular paint...I used more paint, it took longer and was just more difficult to use, I'm painting my kitchen cabinets with Dixie Belle chalk paint. Just started, but so far so good. Did you know you can paint fabric, ceramics and almost anything else with chalk paint. The stuff is a marvel and so easy to clean-up afterwards.

    Thank you for sharing this - you do a great job on the video, you explain everything really well, and I found it very informative. But about the chalk paint - what am I missing? I drank the cool aid, tried it on my cabinets, and had a horrible experience applying multiple coats and trying to hide brush marks. I wish I had seen this video first, and I would have sanded, primed, and painted with latex instead. 3 passes total. The big selling point everyone was telling me on chalk paint is that “you don’t have to sand or prep”. I’m not sure that’s a fair statement when you have to wash, coat, coat, coat, coat, wax, wax, buff. The first 5 passes = “prep work”. I’m thinking it would have been so much easier to use latex. Why does everyone love this stuff so much????

    • @QuiltAddictsAnonymous
      @QuiltAddictsAnonymous  Před 4 lety

      It is really just the white that needs a lot of coats like this. All of the other colors I have used have gotten full coverage in two coats with some touch up on a third. It is really easy to hid your brush strokes and feet a nice smooth finish. And for cabinets, you really want to finish with shellac instead of wax so it holds up better to the abuses of everyday kitchen messes. I am going to use it on my kitchen cabinets some day, but not white, a darker color that uses less coats.

    • @QuiltAddictsAnonymous
      @QuiltAddictsAnonymous  Před 5 lety +1

      Semi gloss white paint. And I just clean it with tsp, prime with kilz and then cover with two coats of semi gloss. You’ll want to fill any nail holes and caulk any seams in between the priming and the paint.

    • @bmrjma2144
      @bmrjma2144 Před 5 lety

      Quilt Addicts Anonymous thank you for your feedback. One final question - is there anything you do to the wood prior to the kilz to get the primer to stick to the existing poly on the trim?
