How is masculinity toxic? Being masculine is not toxic. Being rude to women and sexual harassment has nothing to do with masculinity. This ad is sexist for labelling men as such.
They're not saying masculinity is toxic, they're talking about toxic masculinity, which is the hyper- aggressive or violent version of masculinity.
No one is saying being masculine is toxic. Masculine men are sexy. Toxic masculinity is disgusting, misogynistic, aggressive, and wait for it...toxic. Google “masculinity”. Then google “toxic masculinity” and you’ll understand the difference.
I think they are not saying masculinity in general is toxic...but those certain things that people believe make a man masculine is toxic. This can range from men who think women are beneath them...to some men feeling that saying or doing certain things makes you less of a man...like for example when Terry Crews spoke out about him being sexually assaulted a lot of guys made fun of him and told him to "man up" or when men go through depression or anxiety it is seemed by some as weak to get help or acknowledge it. To me it it kind of explains why men have a higher suicide rate than women. We have been conditioned to think that certain things make someone more masculine or feminine which creates this whole toxic masculinity thing. But that's just my opinion
Masculinity isn't toxic. Toxic masculinity is. For example, you'll see a video responding to this add saying "Gilette is for pussies". That's an example of toxic masculinity.

The ad has nothing to do with not being proud of being a man. The ad addresses a culture around masculinity, not BEING A MALE. You might want to open your eyes and think of the message before crying uproar-- don't be so sensitive.

@@jasmineturner9740 Is it possible that such a thing as toxic femininity exists.
@@FabianVilchesgomez It's not easy to explain really. Its in the same way that a lot of women have been raised to believe that they have to treat their boyfriends like their property to "keep them". Toxic behaviors, whether feminine or masculine, are learned through things like media, observations and stereotypes, that a lot of the time can be enforced by their parents and grandparents. Personally I know a few grandmother's who told me that I shouldn't partake in a casual discussion when my boyfriend is speaking to another man, because "the men are talking". The vast majority of men are good, decent people despite the apparent deluge of encouragement to be toxic they receive. This ad instead promotes the idea that men have in fact taken in all of the supposed toxicity and are broken on the whole as a result, saying they need to fix themselves and each other.
The problems are first that this is pandering no matter how you slice it, and it's obnoxious in that sense, and second that there's no way we'd see an ad showing all the ways women can be awful and then holding all women responsible for it. I'm not alone in that I'm sick of both being held responsible for the awful things other people do and of the double standard.
I'm not saying that they're suggesting that all men engage in bad behaviour. They're saying that some men do, which is true, but they are also saying that most other men are enabling bystanders, which is where I disagree. Most men are good, decent people who for the most part mind their own business, but intervene when they see someone being mistreated and are themselves in a position to help. Those scenes at the end of the video? I see them way more often than I do the stuff they talk about and display in the beginning.
Instead, this is a pandering call to arms from a shaving supply company to men who are, for the most part, already doing what they're being called to do. I believe in the best of men; they don't need to be told to do it as if all the good men just aren't good enough yet.
That's all beside the fact too that zero women in the ad are shown as part of the problem; they're only ever victims of all the terrible men. They're not being asked to step up. This ad isn't asking everyone-it's only asking the men as if men and men alone are solely responsible for creating the problem. God forbid we treat women as cultural agents instead of perpetual cultural victims.
Amen
@@genericname8727 The point is it was unnecessary and pandering. The overwhelming majority of men already do those things. It's in a man's nature to protect. We don't need to be told to do so. But some of those scenes were ridiculous. A man pursuing a woman on a street nowadays is considered to be offensive? So what, are we to assume that guy was going to assault her or something? And kids fighting in a yard? They show no context in how that began or if they were being playful or anything. It's to push an agenda that's all it was.
Those ads tend to hold "society" responsible for those things rather than women at large.
I'd love to see them try this ad with any other group. Can you imagine the outrage?
not buying another single Gillette product for as long as I live.. and that includes even your $2 shaving foam
Simply put - masculinity is not toxic. Masculinity is a necessity. If we want to tell men in our society that their own masculinity is detrimental, then we're poisoning the very thing that makes men protectors and leaders. Men's drive and protective attitude saves lives.
Society, why don't you want your men to be masculine? What happens when we need masculine good men to stop the bad guys? Men who are being told that masculinity is harmful will not be quality men. They will not be equipped to protect others. Men are naturally more willing to put themselves in harms way in order to save lives. If men's natural makeup is being suppressed, their qualities will become suppressed too. It's not just a man's physical features that makes him well equipped to protect, it's in our DNA. We are natural protectors of our families, our assets, our country, ect. You don't want to interfere with that.
"Gender roles" should exist to a certain extent in my opinion. A woman's love is different than a man's love. A woman is better equipped to be a care giver/nurturer and a loving mother. A man is better equipped to be a protecter and a loving father. There's a reason only a man and a woman can produce children. Femininity and masculinity are both needed and they should not become synonymous to one another. That's not "politically correct" but it is absolutely correct.
No, that's your opinion.
Victoire Thêta no, that's facts. Keep your opinion out of factual conversations.
@@noneofyourbusiness7787 Sure, that's why you even wrote "in my opinion". 🙄
Men as well as women can have a protective attitude and save lives.
Toxic masculinity doesn't mean masculinity is toxic. It means a certain kind of masculinity (which shouldn't be considered masculinity at all) is toxic.
Gender roles are really variable according to the society. And women can be protectors just like men can be nurturers. Your XX or XY chromosomes do not define your personality or your interests. Someone who thinks that has no considerations for facts.
The difference with the Kapernick ad is that Nike actually appealed to its consumer base while Gillette didn't
@FOOTerS UNiTE well, the sneakers doesn't have to be Nike, it can be Adidas, puma etc
Nike appealed to such a tiny minority of racists. How is that even an accomplishment.

Whoever dislikes the MESSAGE of that ad is exactly who needs to hear it the most. Toxic masculinity IS real and we MUST overcome it. Now, I don't know about all the hypocrisy of a company making money off of it and all that stuff, which may actually explain some of the dislikes ratio. You know that when we say "toxic masculinity" we are not saying that masculinity is toxic right? RIGHT?! Of course fathers can and should be great role models for their kids, but some men need to stop being toxic.
This add isn't celebrating anything. This add blatantly says, men are bad, and they need to change. Period. Are there bad men? Yes. There are also bad women. Can you imagine the backlash if Gillette made an add that said women are bad, and they need to change?

Why? Cuz they called men out?
Men need to EMBRACE masculine activities and characteristics, they are what build societies and accomplish goals. Competitiveness, aggression, confidence, integrity. "Toxic masculinuity" when used by other men are simply an example of failed members of the gender who have none of these values and they don't want you to have them either.

Your "silent majority" are 90% of the comments here. Don't worry, we know how you feel. Carry on with your internet activism.

@@pierrec.dussault2138 Oh for sure, that's what is interesting about the internet, people are more honest. Also more unreasonable and seem to get off on starting drama. It is not that difficult to speak up in person without being rude, I do it often when needed. If you are reasonable, people will most likely hear you and be willing to discuss rather than fight. If that doesn't work, there's probably no way to get through to those people anyway. Calling women 'gold digging sluts' and calling for a repeal of suffrage isn't going to solve anything, it just encourages division and hatred. If that's how they talk in real life, no wonder no one listens to them.
@@asuka813 except that's not what most of them are saying. A lot of them are leaving reasonable comments (not all of them obviously). And most are not pleased with this ad.
@@asuka813 Gillette's sexism is socially acceptable in the real world. The backlash they are receiving often is not. Yes, calling women "gold digging sluts," even the women who are exactly that (they do exist) is not helping anything, and neither is this ad. This ad is polarizing, and frankly, I think that was done on purpose. If they simply said that bullying is wrong no matter who the bully or victim is, it would not have been nearly so polarizing. That is something that the people who defend this ad don't seem to get.

The moment in the ad where a man says "What I think she is trying to say is…" while the woman looks sad had me entertained.
If she didn't explain herself well, what else would he say. People have done that with me, when I have difficulty articulating.
If this moment does anything, it shows that women are overly sensitive and unfit for that environment.
I'm a guy, and I have trouble articulating. People do this with me all the time. We usually have a good laugh about it, too. If this woman just took her mistake in stride she would be having fun with them.
Exactly. Either people look at you and they respect you, or they don't. That is the sad truth. Men face it everywhere with other men. Women just completely misunderstand and think men are doing it to ONLY them. It's how society works.
If someone doesn’t want you to talk over them then don’t do it. It’s not that hard to be a good person.
I guess they thought this would make men start shaving their body hair... weird. I won’t be buying Gillette products ever again
