Xaoc devices Batumi II & Poti II - A classic LFO remastered

- Using a lot of modulation sources to create interesting patches is one of the things that got me excited about modular. Batumi from Xaoc devices has been a popular choice for a flexible quad LFO, and for good reasons. However, they just launched an updated version that adds even more to the options! In this video I have a closer look :)

Awesome work as always! And thanks for the shout-out - my video is coming on nicely and should be ready next week 😉
Thank you Tom! Happy to shout-out your channel, and good luck with the vid. Looking forward :)
Really nice update. Didn't check it out yet. Thank's for the video.
Thanks for watching! :)
Lovely examples and admirably comprehensive feature walkthrough. The best parts were the sections that remind me what I can do with my original Batumi. That calms my urges to sell it to upgrade to the new version.
Hey, glad to hear it! Both are great modules indeed, no need to upgrade and change everything that's possible, that's an endless road :)
I appreciate the block diagrams, thanks
Glad you like them! Cheers :)
This last patch with the multiple devided audio rate is just WOW ❤
Thanks! That one was fun to make, and think I have to re-use that semi random melody for suer :)
The drum at 16:25 is just insane! Feels like a real jazz drummer playing.
Yeah! Such a simple trick, but it does great voltage controlled clock div/mult duties :)
@@MonotrailTechTalk If you had a simple oscillator, how would you duplicate its sine wave and shift the phase of each copy as perfectly without Batumi? Is a simple Doepfer A-125 doesn't seem enough?
I'm also wondering how one could recreate something like the Three Body and its phasing feature.
Interesting thing about Batumi is that all 4 LFO's stay in sync. I'd have to read up on the functionality of the A125, and whether it shifts a phase based on time, or relative to the frequency of the incoming waveform :) You would only need one 90 degree shifted version. Then you can copy and invert the shifted and original to create the 180 and 270 shifted version.
@@MonotrailTechTalk Interesting thoughts.
Could you please show more detail of that drum patch, please? Are those your own samples? Which module did you use for playing those? Did you also modulate parameters on that sampler?
Just got myself a Batumi I with the Poti expander. I remember I was turned away from this module at the beginning because it was too much for me to understand as a beginner. I think I'm ready now! It was either the Batumi or the ochd; decided to go with the Batumi because of the extra flexibility/complexity. So long and thanks for all the patches!
Nice! If you are getting interested in this I am pretty convinced you will enjoy it! Even if it takes a a bit to grasp all of it, that will only mean it will grow with you and you will discover more uses for it along the way. It's absolutely a great module!
💙
Does it retain state when powered off?
Does it power up doing exactly what it did when powered down that is?
Sorry, missed this one! But yes it does :)
Nice module for sure but for the price of a Batumi + Poti you can almost get a Kermit mkiii which is probably the most versatile LFO/modulation source/ wavetable oscillator in all of Eurorack world in just 12hp. Only two advantages Batumi has over Kermit is more hands on control and multiple waveform outputs per channel at the same time.
I gotta give it to XAOC though; releasing a Batumi mkii is probably the best move they could've made after being a Behringer clone-victim.
Think it was the right move indeed, just make it better :) I also really enjoy the smooth random output, think that ads a lot, but I'm very biased towards smooth random voltages :) In any case, have to admit I don't have much xp with the Kermit, will have a closer look, for some reason always thought it was a dual module!
You should really check it out some time then. It's a modulation powerhouse and has great internal X-mod which is assigned kinda like with the new DSI synths. Press the button of your desired X-mod source, wiggle the pot of your destination by how much you want it to be modulated and that's it. It also has very versatile external CV control per channel including input attenuverters and output attenuators per channel and even presets and preset morphing. @@MonotrailTechTalk
Thanks! Will have a look :)
Kermit is horribly menu divey, plus there are loads of combination keypresses, and some really small fonts on that screen. Batumi is much more immediate.
@@tinytuco horribly menu divey I don't second. Shortcut combinations on the hand absolutely though, that's why I mentioned it as a plus for batumi. I also felt a bit torn about the handling of Kermit in the beginning but it really just takes a short while and once you understand the logic behind the combination key presses everything is achievable fast and reliable. There is always going to be the tradeoff between depth and functionality and immediacy and handling.
I only just bought the MKI versions of both of these! 😞
There's always new modules going to come out every day :) Just new options, updates, or alternatives. Both modules you got are great, and you probably got them for good reason! Enjoy :)
So the official name is Batumi Mk2? Seems your affiliate link (soundofeu) still only has the Mk1
Hi there! Think it just started shipping, might take a sec before it's available everywhere :)
minute one on this video similar with your video on 30 seconds, what patch did yoo used? what oscillator filter and modulator? czcams.com/video/8EyOmJHeQDU/video.html
Hi there! The oscillator at 30sec is Batumi II ;) The module can be used as oscillator because it tracks 1v/oct well into audio rates. One LFO is used as square wave osc with pulse width. And one LFO is used as noise source. The patch is explained in detail in the video at 8:13
Edit: Filter is Zagzreb, in screen on the left.
thank you so much for your detailed answer, I need to sell my v1 one :)@@MonotrailTechTalk
i don't understand what this is , as you didn't explain it properly. A completely new module or a new firmware?
Sorry you're having trouble catching up. Both modules are physically different, and have the II at the end of the name printed on them. So, new modules :)
He explained it perfectly in the very beginning

That is irrelevant to his understanding of the matter. Not helpful. Boo to you. And good day.
ok, i understand I'm drunk.. still i'm missing the point.
No worries, I'm here to help. Most people get drunk to escape reality a bit, let go of daily things, have fun with friends and socialize. Just keep trying, you'll get there!
