Face The Nation | Ramaphosa’s letter to Steenhuisen

- ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has written a harsh letter to DA Leader John Steenhuisen, accusing him of changing the terms of the talks about who will hold cabinet roles. In the letter, Ramaphosa told Steenhuisen that they found the earlier letter by DA Federal Chairperson Helen Zille, to ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula, offensive, condescending, and inconsistent with the Constitution.
Ramaphosa, in his letter, further says the DA has been disruptive and uncooperative in the negotiations, unlike other parties. Political analyst.
Prof Dirk Kotze says the chances of the DA leaving the GNU are slim and if they do leave, the KZN Government will collapse.

Can they all just stop this BS and remember who put them all there. Sharing is what it is about and put your arrogance aside please its about the people. It's time just fix SA and make her great.
it was never about us keep fooling yourself 🤣
Make all discussions public. They represent us
If the DA are not given positions where they can make a difference they should withdraw
Letter is said. to be written by NEC
Only in suburban Cape
The DA deserves a lot more than the scraps they are being given! ANC that don't want to communicate by letters (e-mail) also just shows they want to stick to their corrupt ways!
Ironically , Ramaphosa uses a letter to communicate this.
😂
Not a DA supporter but emails are on point as ANC cannot be trusted

What is the agreement? Are you making up porkies?
Let them start government and let’s see what they are gonna do.

I did not vote for DA nor ANC, but Cyril swapping TDI with Tourism is insultive to DA. ANC MUST remember they did not obtain outright majority - it's important DA to get ministries that they can make positive impact to our country.
ANC has dismally FAILED in ALL ministries for 30yrs. They must wipe those crocodile tears, so we can move forward as a nation
DA also did not get majority it actually got way less to make demands , time for wyt people to make demands are gone
@@tebellorankadiam black and you are talking absolute rubbish.Period!
Exactly
All the parties did not get the 2/3 majority
ANC doesn't owe DA TDI. Why does DA feel entitled to that particular ministry??
8 ministries from 30... is that asking for power or what are you hiding within those departments from the DA and the general public GNU should be a balance of power not a tool to put the ANC back in power. The issue is many wont get those tenders as promised anymore
That's a fact
@@ThembaTselaand the ANC must just accept it.
DA is power hungry. It must relax. They also have Deputy Ministers already.
@@MrLechesa DA is asking for less than what their quota entitles them to while the ANC is demanding more.
Your concept of who is power hungry is flawed.
@@ProcaviaCapensis-ts8ub Only one party is publicly demanding Cadre Deployment and even Tenders ontop of Ministers and Deputy Ministers. That's DA.
They have enough! Noone owes them anything.
Constitutionally, Ministers serve at the behest of the President. He should've given them less than what he did already. Just to deal with this arrogance. Alternatively they can go back to being Official Opposition

I think the fight is not over a bone...but to have a govt without corruption. It is mostly the corruption that means the demise of all of us. We all want a fair and just government

Oh really? Tell that to the 10's of thousands of coloured and black people in the Western Cape that the DA has ignored for 20 years. You think the ANC is bad. DA is just has bad. They are going to lose their majority fodder base eventually. Like the ANC did.

Is the leaking of information legal or the media is promoting wrong practice if they are paying for the information?
It's wrong for them to know stuff should be in jail
They have always paid for information 😂😂😂 and always will
ANC should give from their positions for all the small losers they brought in. DA should het their ~9 positions and give one to FG+ if they have to. Otherwise, they should just leave this cabal and not be window dressing and not be able to make any meaningful change.
Let Ramaposa deal with EFF and MK.
The ANC has their claws so deep into South Africa that it seems that they will never want to let go of their power so that they can drain SA even further. Please, we beg you, ANC, let go a little and let us thrive. We are jobless, hungry, riddled with crime and miserable. All because of YOU. Just stop!
Yes yes
Simply put there is no 'unity' in the government of national unit 😭
It's the president's prerogative is over , not in a coalition government, this phrase is used to loosely...
The President can override what it's coalition partners want, but they can then remove him in a no confidence vote
no its actually in the constitution.
@@fela1489 I agree...but the constitution was designed for a party that won with a majority vote ...in this case it's a coalition with other parties... So the dynamics have changed

I guess by right people you mean white people?
Are these letters really leaked 😂. I feel like they BCC the media when they click send.
There are letters they leaked before GNU for their demands.
Be real, one MP parties are in there for personal gain in positions, they contribute nothing on the #s, except IFP, PA, VV who contribute maybe 8%.
The DA is either a coalition partner or there to put ANC in power.
8 positions are in line with international practice in a Cabinet of 28 members.
The letters are leaked by the ANC against DA coalition.
If this was a business I would want competent DA leaders in as many posts as possible!
Yes yes

RAMAPHOSA MUST LOOK AT HIS OWN INCONSISTENCIES.
Bear in mind it's a government of national unity but with Cyril in charge, DA must accept the offer there's more other parties to accommodate
With regard to comparing the DA wanting positions and the PA demanding positions in municipalities. Stupid comparison Clement. PA were going to one group and then horse trading with another group and going with the best deal. And they were a small party. Here the DA is the second biggest party and they are not negotiating with another group looking for the best deal. They need positions in proportion to the votes they received.
Should those two parties be trusted,as it seems it was GNU with benefits.
The unpreparednesd of SANDF is a proxy for Govt's ineffectiveness. Rude awakening. So glad I'm not in a military that's at the mercy of the ANC ruling party.
Bring our soldiers home guys.
Realistically if it is a government of national unity, since ANC got 40% and DA received 20% - you would expect for every 2 cabinet positions ANC gets DA gets 1.
But how because this is not a coalition between 2 parties but between 10 parties. How will the other 8 parties get appointed.
@@lindokuhlexulu6652Sort them proportionally amongst all the parties. Why should the ANC retain their share and whittle down the DA to accommodate the others? Only the ANC negotiate with forked tongue.
That would be correct if this was a coalition. Positions should be split amongst other political parties.
@@goodenoughcele2068 I agree with you to a point - but parties who barely got any votes did not really get a greenlight for governance. 30 seats - 16 ANC, 8 DA, 3 IFP, 2 PA, 1 FF+. Every other party in GNU received less than 1 percent of the electoral vote, and should not get a cabinet position (They should get deputy positions). That would be fair, and that would be a government of national unity. Anything else is just people playing favourites.
Yes very simple maths

Proportionality is important and because the ANC is cleverly trying to strengthen his position amongst the smaller parties, but why should the DA suffer for Cyrils attitude. I like the discussions here as all sides are considered.
If any walks away that will mean they are only concerned about themselves and not SA as the anc has shown us over the years, the DA should not walk away if SA matters.
Politicians only want POWER
This political party seems to be a defiition of the word greedy, and one may wonder if this is something they live up to but i'm not surprised.
The ANC did not obtain a majority. On what grounds is the stupidity of Rhamaposa's response to DA? Playing games to renege on the negotiation.

Can't ANC carry on without this DA?
In the motion of no confidence the DA must not support Ramaphosa, let's move.
30 years of the ANC government has brought South Africa to this point. They have mismanaged the country, thus they fell to below 40%. Yet, they feel they can dictate because they have experience. On what planet are they? It's really not a record that they should be proud of.
If they carry on this way there will be no economy have you seen how many Companies are closing , what about doing something positive for SA
the da said they are not in coalition for positions and now they want to dictate the president on how to choose his own cabinet. da is not in this to make a difference but for selfish interest. they can withdraw, anc will do just fine without them.
ANC fighting for posts so that they can continue feeding at the piggy trough!
Whites have been giving Ramaphosa money and they have the eight to hold him to it.....he must just leave the ANC.😂😂😂
The big problem we have is bad faith , please look at the ZAR everyone is losing especially the businesses , as an entrepreneur I can say shame on all those in charge of the government . You don’t care about so much poverty .So many unemployed , what about putting your differences aside and doing what is best for the country .
What a disgrace , we are going backwards day by day , let us go forward , let us look to foreign investment so SA can grow . I cry to see the suffering and poverty of so many in our county .
We are losing talent , these are the people who can create jobs 😢
DA accepting the current terms is Political Suicide, may as well walk out here’s a snippet explaining why…
“What this potentially means for ANC coalition partners is starkly illustrated by the prior experience of the Inkatha Freedom Party in national government. After the 1999 election the ANC continued in its coalition with the IFP, giving that party the ministries of Home Affairs, Correctional Services, and Science and Technology.
In all three cases ANC loyalists were inserted as DGs, below these IFP ministers. In the case of Home Affairs, Mbeki appointed one ANC ex-intelligence officer as Mangosuthu Buthelezi’s DG in 1999 and then another in 2003. He also appointed an ANC ex-intelligence officer as DG of DCS in 2001. The effect of this was to allow these two IFP ministers the trappings of office but neutralise them politically by ensuring administrative control of their departments was in ANC hands. This was especially so as the ANC majority in cabinet had the final say over policy, which was binding on those IFP ministers, as well.
This was an expertly executed political version of the German military manoeuvre called the “kesselschlacht” (battle of encirclement) whereby you force your opponent into submission not by a direct assault, but by encircling them and cutting them off from their supply lines, and their avenue of retreat. The ANC destroyed the National Party of FW de Klerk in the first GNU in a similar manner, as described here.
This policy of deploying ANC loyalists to top positions in the state has continued to this day. In an affidavit submitted to court last year in defence of cadre deployment President Ramaphosa stated under oath that the Cadre Deployment Policy “applies to senior positions in government such as Directors-General and Deputy Directors-General”. And he also vehemently defended the right of the ANC to deploy cadres to these and other positions in the state machinery that it controlled.
This means that once they have agreed to serve in cabinet any new DA ministers are going to take over departments whose top ranks are, according to President Ramaphosa himself, staffed with ANC deployees. Directors-General are employed on fixed five-year contracts and in terms of the current regulations, should a vacancy for head of department arise, the selection panel should be made of the minister of that department, two other ministers, and a national head of department. The panel would need to reach consensus on their preferred candidate and cabinet would need to approve the choice before the President made the appointment. When it comes to choosing a new DG for their department, the DA minister could potentially be outnumbered three-to-one by ANC people on the selection panel for the appointment.”
…the deal is poisonous in its current form.
I cant begin to understand (or maybe i do) why CR is objecting to pujtting things in writing. Surely this is normal behaviour in negotiations?
DA must take their offered positions then they must later support and vote for motion of no confidence on CR. Simple
The President views the SA voters as a 'peanut gallery'
ANC is not fuming they believe in the DA thosr are yes men remaining in the ANC.
Listening to his responses it's quite clear our soldiers are sent to wars blind or unarmed really South African must be concerned of thier family members in SANDF. You can't say we supply as we are on the battle field that's poor planning what is an assessment for??? 😢😢😢😢
On a lighter note, why does Prof. Coetzee look like he's in a recording from the mid 90s???😂

Citizens voted for the same political parties, then why when they are negotiating about the future of the country they do it inside the closed doors. We want to know. Secondly anc didn't won out right so they must acknowledge that and give important portfolios to other parties since they have failed dismally to run this country. If they were doing right, the country wouldn't be in this situation of govrrnemt on tstional confusion
Another Nonsensical Conclusion - ANC expect nothing less

Could it be that the DA's "condescendance" in asking for key positions is rather a confidence and surity of the specific type of positive contribution they believe they can have to the goverment. It seems to me that the DA is not doubting their political vision for the country (where they can make a difference) , other than what the ANC might be experiencing. Is the ANC in an identity crisis? Is SA in "uncharted identity waters" 😅
To a point but why hv DA neglected nd allowed killings drugs in Coloured arears in CapeTown. How will thry rule fairly when they harbour such hatred for Coloureds. Why do they want PA out of the way what are they fearing. Csn they give assurance they will include Coloureds/Koisans

They're entitled to more.
If they accept too little it will be seen as a betrayal by their supporters.
@ProcaviaCapensis-ts8ub, they are entitled to none. ANC can still form a minority government or work with the other parties. DA does not have that option.
