I've always hated wearing long nails. When I started playing the kalimba, I let them grow. My glissando technique was so much better and I thought it was because I was practising more. Then I decided to cut my nails. Big mistake 😭 The sound wasn't as good and I missed a lot of notes bacause I was so used to the extra length from the long finger nails.
Lesson learned, now I try to keep them always the same length so I file them frequently.
I also don't like long nails since I like to clean a lot but I got used to it afterwards since I need it to play.. But it breaks off when it gets too long since I'm too busy or lazy to file at times and I get this kalimba time out as a punishment 😂

It was hard to watch the part where you cut your nails so close to the skin. Staahp
An advise: To prevent your nails from breaking, you can use nail hardener. I use the extra strong version. It really works.
nails need flexibility to not break, hardening just makes them more brittle and easier to snap on impact
word of advise: only use nail hardener if you have paper thin nails, and use nail oil for healthier and flexible nails
That’s wild. I’m a violinist so it’s the opposite. You’re more precise with no nails of super close cut nails.

You can still play with short nails but plucking for now and most beginner songs are just plucking then a few weeks once you're done practicing your nails will be ready for you 💅💓

This is so informative, I always struggle as a guy to maintain my nails to enjoy my Kalimba
I play ukulele and yesterday I received my very first kalimba and in excitement I had been growing out my nails for a couple weeks and in those weeks I went fricc I play ukulele how is this gonna work and then I remembered I don’t need my thumbs with how I strum 😂so I was hyped so far I’m in love with my kalimba it’s so therapeutic for me and really helps with my anxiety and brings me down from my attacks since it sounds like a lil music box and it’s so sweet and calming I wanted to say thank you for introducing me to this beautiful instrument

Hi, Short nail player here. The problem is when you have short nails you can't pluck. You have to use the figertips themselves and scrape or press against the keys. You'll lose your whole figernail trying to play like that. I personally lay the kalimba down and play with my fingers like a piano.
I remember that a day before my Kalimba arrived, I cut my nails. I tried to play with the short nails and it was hurt 😂 So I need to wait for 2 weeks to grow my nails and try to learn playing Kalimba 😅

You need to eat fruit and vegetables for a better nutrition and so maybe it will start to grow fast, it's important we eat healthy and the body will talk to you, your body it's saying there's something missing on your food related to your nails ^^

OMG, this always KILLS ME. A few weeks ago the nail on my left thumb broke and I was heartbroken. I treasure my thumbnails too much (😂) since they take forever to grow back out. I actually have to keep layers of nail hardener on them to make sure they rarely break. Nail harders work AMAZINGGG. 💅🏻
I tried applying nail polish some time ago even if I never do it since it always come off on their own and it helped strengthen them.. But when I removed them since I wanted my nails to breathe they break off when it's too long. 😢 I'll try searching what nail hardeners are ✨
@@SamSalvador Nail hardener looks and smells like nail polish but it doesn’t work the same. I actually dont like nail polish. If I put nail polish on, my nails stay weak and then the color peels off within 24 hours. Nail hardener makes my nails rock hard (almost) if I paint 2-3 layers on. I use the clear color so my natural nails shine through. I use the brand “Nail Aid” but I’m not sure what country you are in ... it’s available in America and other countries too. I would guess.
@@SamSalvador Also, the clear color looks really beautiful on the hands, as it give the nails a shiny appearance. It’s my favorite look.

@@SamSalvador I know this is pretty late, but as someone with paper-thin nails that flake/peel and bend easily, I've found that 2-3 coats of Nail Aid's 3-day Keratin treatment works very well to help my nails not break! For the first time in my young adult life, my nails pass my fingertips. I used to be a habitual nail-biter, and even when I tried to grow them out they'd just tear/peel off at the corners.
Regular nail polish wasn't helping to thicken them up either. But this clear keratin treatment polish is definitely doing something good! (In fact, I'm going to have to trim my nails soon... I'm a martial artist and need pretty short nails to be able to make a tight fist without my nails poking into my palms.)
As an aspiring kalimba hobbyist, I now have hope! XD Thank you for all your advice, music, and tutorials!
If you break a thumb nail or have short nails, you could try Alaska picks. These are for guitarist, but the larger sizes work well for kalimba.

Well, i have a kalimba too. I wanna tell you something , its about my nails , when they grow up to there limit , i cut them half . I mostly dont let my nails break away on there own, so that I can play kalimba always.

My nails are naturally round so when I tried square shaped nails I was surprised it sounded different 😅
@@SamSalvador agreed!! i used to cut my nails more square and kept getting a weird buzzing when playing haha! keeping them rounded from now on XD
I have huge anxiety and one of the things I can’t control is my nails, they’re always pretty short, do you have any alternative ideas while I grow my nails out?
( At this moment they’re only a little bigger then my thumb itself, so hopefully that’s something ^^ )
This is probably too late, but you could use kalimba thumb picks if you have some.
It's the best to play in quarantine. Baciase if I play on school years,my teacher will kill me for having long nails lol

If you absolutely fail in growing nails/maintaining them. Then one piece of advice is using metak picks, it'll sound the same as plucking with long nails.
Funny how important it is to cut your nails can be.

i'm watching this cause i hope i can play on the kalimba i just ordered. i have been impulsively biting my nails since i was a kid, which i always try to stop and when i'm so close and my naiks start to grow, i end up biting them again. its so frustrating. i hope this time, as i get into the kalimba, i can stop for good
here my nails are probably only 2 cm long and u say half an inch. Dang...... it feels awkward to grow long nails, cuz girls can grow it for fashion, but guys can't lol.

Use or apply garlic on your nails and like scrub it for like 5 mins then don't wash it yet, let it dry then wash it, it will make your nails stronger and to avoid it from breaking😅

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but is plucking with your nails bad for them long-term? I’m getting a kalimba soon and I always have medium/long nails, but I’m a little worried I’ll damage my nails.
Hmm.. It depends how hard you pluck I guess, with wooden kalimba I don't need to put much pressure to pluck but with acrylic I do.. So I guess long term its better to play with wooden so you don't strain your nails too much
@@SamSalvador Okay, thank you! I tried out my wooden kalimba and the plucking motion is actually much more gentle than I thought. I’ll probably still get an acrylic one, just for the aesthetic. 😊

I guess my nails are weak, I had been growing them out for a few weeks in preparation for kalimba. Well it came in today and I've played for quite a while and it wore my nails down so much 😭 they're barely your half length now and the left thumb nail is hardly poking past my fingertip. Granted it already had a damaged patch right there, but the tines has just shredded the damaged spot 😔 my right thumb is a bit better. But its starting to get hard to play with this length. My thumbs grow so slowly so it will be so long before I'm able to comfortably play ☹

How are you playing like 3 notes at the same time with long nails? With short nails it sounds very smooth and with my long nails I can always hear the "nail-sound" on the notes. Am I really the only person struggling with this?

I know you get thumb picks but I would really love to play the kalimba without em (if i get one, which i'm thinking of), I'm a guitarist pianist AND a violinist...so rip :'). The guitar is atleast okay, but for the violin you NEED short nails...so yeah...never gonna play em with my real nails ig🥺🥺🥺
