He said it clear as day, making the game a collectible first is a disservice to the players that keep the game alive!
It eventually ends up being bad for collectors too, when collectors are prioritized. The value of magic as a popular game is part of what makes it interesting to collectors. The other thing is balancing decisions for longevity versus maximizing quarterly numbers.
16:35, gang! Carve those words above the WotC HQ entrance!
Surprised the mic was not cut off after that
Holy shit the applause LMAO 🤣🤣
note that he did not say it cannot be both. providing for both collectors and players would make everyone happy and happy customer is perpetualy spending customer.
@@PartisanGamerDE they managed to do fine under “capitalist rule” (cringe) for nearly three decades.
@@PartisanGamerDE you are conflating capitalism with government policy and fiat money. Common mistake for the resentful Marxists.

Richard Garfield: look what they've done to my boy
Just glad they let him talk freely. More epic man than final fantasy tactics arithmetician, and he's a math teacher to boot. Did like vid and bought his roguebook game on sale to show appreciation. Best thing to do is jump ship if you are priced out or they change politically (cancelled cards was too ridiculous for me).
@@MrVariant Thats true, its good they let him speak directly to the players, the Lineup to ask questions at MTG 30 was long.
@alphonsoinvestments it's sad how magic got worse since this (competitors too, yugioh power creep and pokemon worse card borders/art). Hard to buy that kinda devotion if people find something better to do. There's also a lot of video games like dragon ball z kakarot or flewfie's adventures and final fantasy 8 which all include card games as a minigame. Sword and fairy together forever too. Why would I want to pay for cards from a mismanaged, anti-consumer company in the modern day?
Richard should have been a better custodian of his work.
so ironic that what he said at 16:35 was on the magic 30th anniversary
Surprised Hasbro didn’t blacklist him after this 😂
Salty!!!! 🤠
Actually its crazy because if you listen to him he says multiple things they are doing wrong i love it. He said you dont need a bunch of sets if there good. They have good cards but then they make bad cards on purpose that are fillers to male more sets. Then he says making it a collectible first knowing that’s exactly what they did. I feel he smacked them in the face a few times for us :) You know its bad when there is only 10k view and then 275 likes
The epic music is hilarious next to the tiny crowd and light smattering of applause.
Sounds like a big crowd to me, it's just not being picked up by the stage mics.
Richard Garfield: Game first
Hasbro: Money first
JolioJomon this was a great insight from Richard, its always been strange to me that they keep him around for "goodwill" and don't do the important things he says. but I prefered Magic before the Hasbro sale..
it's a private company under capitalism, hasbro is just playing the game as it's meant to be played. if you want something else, then change the game, but i'm sure you're too brainwashed to want that
Been missing BDM! Good to see him! BDM and Buehler in the booth some time awe back in the good magic time when the pro tours mattered.
Richard! Help!
The game needs you!
I wish BDM would have asked him how he felt about $250 booster packs
Being a wizard sponsored event that would have been a very bad idea on his part. I'm sure he was thinking it but hes being paid to make wizards look good.
Certainly wouldn't be playing board games if Richard Garfield didn't create Magic.
So I have a lot to thank him.
Chess would be a terrible game if you could choose your pieces, but if you couldn't place a queen on the board until the 12th turn (similarly for all pieces), then that would suggest different army-building strategies. That's captured in Magic by the different mana costs of cards.
Also, you would not have access to all pieces at all time, but on each turn you "spawn" a random pieces from those you chose.
Pretty strong message here that WOTC / Hasbro could really do with listening to. $999.99 packs is not the way forward.
This is a pretty great conversation. We were at MTG 30 and watched this live, I missed a bit of the begining when it was live. So I am glad to have found the reply so I can watch it again.
Boosters Marked up to 25 and selling for 100 months later:Truly absurd prices for packs. Putting the collector and the speculator before the player: a true terror! Thank goodness Richard Garfield was able to set the rudder to prevent that nonsense from happening in the game’s future.
Now if you’ll excuse me I have a $32 standard collector booster to open and I need to go check if the TCG prices of Magic 30 have come back closer to their perfectly reasonable release price of $250 per pack.
Your anger is misguided. The culprit is the company thotteling supply.
Richard Garfield really put Wizards on the spit roast with this hot take, huh? 🍖🔥
thanks Richard, I really like your analytic aproach of games
Mr. Garfield: " Game first, collectable second..."
Moneygrabbers at wotc: "Huh? No idea what he is talking about..."
Just logged on Hearthstone, got a welcome back gift of 80 boosters! Wuuut! While Wiz wants to sell me 30th celebration boosers, with a price tag of 1000$
I've been so nostalgic lately for the 2011-2012 season 😢
GOAT
Thank you Richard!
Well said.
When is 2HG coming to arena?
I wonder what Richard Garfield thinks about his creation being hyper-sold to oblivion because capitalism. Who am I kidding, he doesn't care. He has moved onto other things a long time ago.
He got his money. Fuck the rest of us.
I miss mtg being just a fun game. 30th anniversary not being for the players... just insanity. I hope they don't get a 40th, they don't deserve our support.
You don't want Magic to exist anymore?
Based
Mr. Garfield, I understand that you are upset. The one thing I can tell you is this is a battle of inches; you need to constantly keep the pressure on Hasbro to get them to back off from MTG.
If they offer you money so they can keep ownership of the game, then don’t take it (take it as bribery, regardless of the legal implications).
Despite only being a fan for 3 years and not a business owner, I know that some (not all) businesses put profit over people and will do anything to increase their profits. Keep fighting, Mr. Garfield; this is another War of the Spark, only the spark is MTG itself, you are Ugin, and Hasbro is Nicol Bolas. I hope this has a good ending.
Great content
I'm so glad I found the Replay. Good Q & A
Why does it sound like the crowd is so loud?
Hello Richard Garfield.
I have some card ideas from the American Midwest.
Hello
i was expecting more of this video, at the very least more people asking various questions. The featured questions sound curated. I'd actually like to ask my question though i never went due to circumstances. When will we see a ZERO mana cost artifact that provides mana and enters the battlefield tapped?
He's not involved with card design at all anymore
The line up to ask questions was long. That's a decent idea for an artifact.
Take notice Hasbro and Wizards. You have been called out and it doesn't look good.
How intrusive is Magic in our lives today? People like me, breathe on its existance and longevity. Magic has become the most common game that about everybody knows or heard of it. MTG has become integral to the lives of many and a livelyhood to a mass of people. The sheer increase of depreciation of the game has hindered the outlook of the game overall. what was looked as nostalgia has turned into being "overwhelming"- What made MAgic exciting has been exasperated and exausted. We have reched a point where the "AWE" of the game has now been turned into "Taken for granted" Because we cannot take it serious anymore. Not becuase Magic is a joke... it is not... But because the business model has evolved from "feed the people- the players" into Segregate the player base. Via their wallet size, emotional conections of the game and favortism- not in that exact order. I mean I never thought there would be a day in my life, where I wrote a comment like this. Where I felt like the game has exceded past the invested players and the people who litterally built the game up by attending every pre-release, draft and spent hours and even free-days at their magic shop. building connections and memories. Building friendships and growth in the game. Some how- and I tie this comment down to this- Some how WOTC has turned from favoring the community over all and pushing for the individual player to be involved in the game. To seperating the players from those special connections with the community and taking the experience away from being an invested player. I may be wrong- you let me know?
I think the "somehow" is easy to explain. The overall company structure does not care about the game and its players burlt profit margins. Because of capitalistic dynamics in big franchises profit comes first. This did not used to be the case, profit was the reward for creating a good game everything else was just sugar on top for the creators and their company. Sure making money is great, and there will always be talks about how to increase profit aside from game design decisions but nowadays this is flipped around. Before EVERYTHING ELSE the company will ask "how can we make more money next quarter from this" and not "what cool set can we do next, what's a cool mechanic, how can we shake up the meta etc etc".
Sure there are alot of people passionate about the game working at WOTC, they try to make a good game, but nobody can tell me that never was there a instruction from the higher ups to print more EDH cards in the sets because then the packs sell better.
I'm pretty sure the brothers war was chosen to milk the base based on nostalgia, it was setting first, mechanics later. "What setting, what plane will make is the most money right now? are there any ideas for mythic rares that will become" must buys" in all formats?
@@Hennesg i loved your reply 100% read it all and didn't get wasted. Than you!
I feel like this is a pretty great point SFT I can feel the separation between players like you said, there has been a long build up to get new players interested organically for years. It's like Hasbro is cashing in on that now.
@@Hennesg I was hoping for a little more out of brothers war. I think they missed another opportunity.
16:30 the part you are looking for
The Legendary God of the MTG 👏🏼
if magic would have more and more colors, the colors would lose their personalities
I understand if you had other big events planed to be on a a screen but if the 30years of your game and can’t be live in person and this was planed most likely a year ahead of time and still. It there in person I think that is wrong
Maybe he's ill or is not willing to be at an event with a big crowd. Don't deprive people of their freedoms just because you have some strange moral leaning.
No, you don't understand...
Why is RG phoning it in?
He doesn't need collector's boxes because he has a drawer full of Black Lotuses at home.
You guys post this and don't heed his advice
Listen to garfield wotc; you are ruining mtg. You are destroying a mans legacy, a game we love, the hype for any new sets, and our confidence in buying any new products period. Less sets, less cards, better design, more casual design, and no unnecessary price hikes cuz you are greedy when numbers been amazing til now when we all sending a message
Does he still work for WOTC?
No, but occasionally he does contract work for them, such as contributing to the design of _Dominaria_ and _Dominaria United._
@@JivanPal thanks!
1000$ proxy boosters FTW. Brilliant!
and expensive!

Woo-hoo! Let's wheel out the games creator so he can pretend we haven't destroyed it and spit on his legacy!
-WOTC employee probably.

Hasbro’s squeezing Magic: The Gathering players for too much money, big bank warns
Stock plummets as analyst says Hasbro is ‘killing its golden goose’
By Charlie Hall on November 14, 2022 12:17 pm
A Bank of America analyst says Hasbro is “destroying the long-term value” of Magic: The Gathering by overprinting cards. The dire warning was accompanied by a double downgrade of Hasbro stock - from “buy” to “underperform” - as its valuation fell more than 5% before trading began on Monday.
“Hasbro is overproducing Magic cards which has propped up recent results,” wrote research analyst Jason Haas. “Card prices are falling, game stores are losing money, collectors are liquidating and large retailers are cutting orders.”
It's not over printing that is missleading it's over producing product if they printed fewer sets that were more focused and good they coul maintainx current printing pace without lower price for boxes but keeping singles at a low price
@@thekittenfreakify They aren't talking about misleading although in the fireside chat a few days ago they were misleading. They are talking about ruining the game and yes they are. They are increasing the cost of sets while devaluing the worth of cards found within. Why would anyone buy if it's worthless?
...to play a god damn game.
@@thekittenfreakify Well I mean no one forced you to
You musubderstand. I am not complaining about the loss of value. I rather see the game be treated as a game than a collectible.
