I love how Lecter doesn’t really consider Clarice a kindred intellect-or even a potential one-rather, he’s intrigued by her courage and stubbornness in a decidedly man’s world. He hasn’t seen much (if any) of that before.
The world is more interesting with her in it.

I got the impression that he was impressed by how green behind the ears she was. She was truly seeking. He also detected honesty in her and didn't expect a genuine person. But he had rigged the game by (at least I thought) by getting the rest of that room full of imprisoned people to start creating a commotion and cause her to backtrack to him in a traumatized state so that he could then give her commands which she was unable to process, judge and pick. He was effective at manipulating.

Weird as it sounds, I liken 'Silence of the Lambs' to 'E.T.,' but it's filmed from the young woman's perspective against a grimy and hostile male world, as 'E.T.' takes the child's point of view on the adults'.

Why not write a new character for the female to embody. No need to swap a role that has already been established as one of the best performance's in cinema. Sure Anthony Hopkins owns that accolade. Liz can be another character.

To think of someone so well versed that they can no longer find good in the world that they become a living terror and then this breath of fresh air comes along and even though it may be his own demise he still helps her grow, learn, guides her in her career/past traumas... And then ultimately they find an unspoken love for each other in their own way...

I would argue Dr. Lecter is incorrect when he claims he didn’t keep souvenirs of his victims like most serial killers do. By eating them he most certainly, if unintentionally, desired to take a piece of his victims with him. In fact, I’d say he did it more so. He didn’t want just a souvenir. He wanted to consume their souls and very being. That they might be trapped in, and with him. He’s fascinated by how different each person is and how they react to his teasings. It stands to reason he has an unquenchable desire for physical contact with everyone he meets. That’s why one of his first actions is to smell her. The mind games are just to get your attention and draw you in. The battle of wits are there to get you forget how close he has gotten to you. He doesn’t feel as though he owns you until he touches you.
