  • Although the Nintendo DS was never as well-known for its multimedia-abilities as its rival, the PSP, that doesn’t mean it didn’t get its fair share of media-capable add-ons. One such device was the Japan-exclusive DS Terebi, which allowed users to to watch digital 1seg TV signals on the go. Let’s take a look at the device and compare it with its main competitor, the PSP 1seg.

    I got another comment from a Japanese viewer on TikTok saying this has a built-in Game & Watch game. I just thought I'd throw that out as another interesting thing this device can do.
    (If only I'd gotten that comment a bit earlier I would've looked into it and included it in the video. Oh well.)

    That’s pretty cool! It would’ve been neat if the USA (and possibly Canada) got an ATSC 1.0 version. However, our channels don’t really have anything except news, weather, and old sitcoms I never heard of.

    • @LegendOfGames
      @LegendOfGames  Před rokem +3

      Most of the time Japanese channels are just showing shows where people watch videos about food and overreact to it, so you’ve actually got it better in my opinion. Also, you’ve gotten me curious as to what these sitcoms are haha

    • @sethbessinger2025
      @sethbessinger2025 Před rokem +1

      @@LegendOfGames So here’s how it goes: The sitcoms are in 480p, stretched out from 4:3 and include, “Home Improvement”, “According to Jim”, “How I Met Your Mother” (which I’ve actually heard of), “That ‘70s Show (Also heard of), “Everybody Hates Chris”, “Funniest Pets & People”, “Night Court”, “The Bernie Mac Show”, and “World’s Funniest Videos: Top 10 Countdown”. They have only 9 shows right now. They used to have shows called “Grace Under Fire” and “Roseanne”, but they were super boring to me. That’s why I just stream shows I want to watch now. We also got ABC (weather, politics(very annoying), and sitcoms), NBC (same thing), and CBS (same thing, but has the “The Price is Right”, which is a good game show). There’s Fox (same as before), and PBS (Documentaries and garbage). There’s Grit, which is Westerns (only my father likes those). I live outside of Nashville, TN, so I get duplicates of stations due to living in two affiliate areas. 58 channels, and nothing on.

    • @LegendOfGames
      @LegendOfGames  Před rokem +3

      @Seth Bessinger That’s really unfortunate if they’re stretched out like that. They were still keeping them in 4:3 before I moved to Japan in 2014, though this may also be something that’s up to the local stations, as I swear I remember seeing older shows in the right aspect ratio when visiting home as well. Japan luckily doesn’t stretch them, but puts annoying colorful bars with a bunch of artwork on them if it’s a kids show.
      I actually know those shows. I often watched That 70s Show and was a pretty big fan by the time it reached its finale, which I watched live. Haven’t seen it in forever, though. My dad was a fan of The Bernie Mac Show. I think both my parents liked Night Court as well, since I remember them talking about it, though I’ve never seen an episode myself. It’s very well-regarded from what I know. I also remember watching Home Improvement as a little kid, which my parents always watched. Not a fan, though. The other stuff you mentioned I’ve seen as well. Of course, streaming does have much better options and I can understand why you’d switch to that.
      I still prefer that to Japanese tv, which is generally just people watching something and reacting with their faces in little bubbles. It’s D-tier stuff. Though, it is nice that they occasionally show anime.
      The main thing I’d be interested in watching on over-the-air tv in the U.S. if I still lived there would be SNL, which will always have a special place in my heart.

    • @sethbessinger2025
      @sethbessinger2025 Před rokem

      @@LegendOfGames I think it may be due to my TV generally stretching 4:3 signals. It might be in 4:3 natively, I’d have to check. I mainly watch Cartoon Network shows from the late 90’s to 2000’s that I used to watch. That, anime, CZcams, and sometimes Futurama is all I watch nowadays. Cable was too expensive for mainly garbage shows pumped out by networks for a quick buck. I’m liking your channel, BTW!

    I remember back in the early 2000 when Brazil was selecting which HD TV signal thing they would adopt. I remember the news saying we decided to go with the Japanese model (this 1seg) because it allowed for mobile television. For a few years most cellphones and tablets sold in Brazil had television (I had one. It was a tablet with a TV antenna thing). But this trend lasted for about 5 years, until Internet became cheaper and people stoped watching television on their cellphone because now they had easier access to fake news online anywhere, which, of course, we all know is much better than television.

    • @LegendOfGames
      @LegendOfGames  Před 6 měsíci

      I guess it's a big cultural difference from Japan. 1Seg receivers are still pretty common here, though mainly in cars. I always see TV playing in vehicles as I go past them.

      @@LegendOfGames Yeah. I remember even before smartphones, there lots of cellphones with TV capabilities in Japan.
      I think people still buy music CDs in Japan too, right?
      I guess Japanese TV channels still put some effort in their shows (something that doesn't happen here).
      Here in Brazil even old people are terminally online, which is kinda funny.
      I mean, seeing old ladies watching kdramas and senior men watching those crazy fake news channels on CZcams.
      My 75 year old dad follows a dog TikToker and talks using Gen Z internet slangs without even knowing. LOOOOOL.

    • @LegendOfGames
      @LegendOfGames  Před 6 měsíci

      Yeah, buying CDs is still fairly common. Video rental stores stayed in popularity much longer than in other countries as well; when I first came to the country in 2011 they were still huge (sadly, streaming has seemed to ultimately defeated them.)
      I'd actually say the TV here is much lower quality than in America. So much stuff is just a bunch of people watching things and reacting to it in little circles on screen. But, people seem to like it.
      And it's ok, I use "lol" all the time as well. I didn't learn until recently that gen-z don't like it, which kinda makes me sad. I guess I better use "haha" more.

    I am able to use this in the Philippines, although I can only receive 1 channel (GMA) as most DTV channels in the area have 1seg settings that match the ISDB-T International spec or some channels had removed 1seg entirely to save bandwidth and Filipinos watch TV via livestream anyway when they're on the go.
