    The reason Dani suddenly got up and seemed upset after taking the mushrooms, was because Mark said “you guys are like my real actual FAMILY”. He triggered her with the word family because she just lost her whole family..

    When the ladies are wailing on the floor with Dani, that's actually a form of love-bombing (via validation) and extreme mirroring behavior. We learn as babies that mirroring other people creates connection...like smiling when the other person smiles.

    Swede here. We don't celebrate Midsummer like this, I promise 😂 I love that you thought there was something weird going on because of the daylight, made me chuckle. No that's just Sweden in the summer haha. It doesn't stay dark for long. Maybe for like 2 hours and then it gets lighter again. Complete opposite during winter time.

    From your reactions I get the feeling that cults aren't something you're familiar with. That's a cult in the movie. They send people out, like Pelle, to bring back sacrifices and potential mates(aka new blood) and maybe even someone to be May Queen. Dani, because she has suffered major losses and Pelle knows it, is brought there to be absorbed into the cult. She is vulnerable and they know it. She smiles at the end because she has lost her mind and is now one of them. By the way, the cult members are feeling the pain of their burning victims, not joy. Pelle states early on that they do everything together and he was not lying. They even share pain. It's part of the process of keeping them all closely attached as cult members. That's how I see it.

    As a Swede I love this film, because its honestly so well researched!
    The aesthetic of the culture is well done, not exact copies but clothes, art, music is very similar to our folk culture.
    The painting over Dani's bed at the start is one every Swede would recognise. It's by our classical painter John Bauer who did a lot of folklore depictions. Blonde girl with a bear.
    Ättestupa and the Blood Eagle are mentioned from Viking times. With Ättestupa, the idea is that you live long enough to be a burden you can have an honourable death by jumping off a cliff. And with Blood Eagle it was a method of torture/execution where they open up the spine to pull the lungs out while they're still alive.
    The dancing around the maypole we do for midsummer every year, but the dance until you drop comes from the folk song Hårgalåten, in which the devil dresses like a fiddler and makes all the young dance until they die. Hårga even giving name to this commune.
    At one point you see them put a pair of scissors in a baby's crib. This is from the belief that iron wards off fae and trolls, and it would be customary to put a nail, scissors, or sheers in the crib so the baby couldn't be stolen.
    There's also a spot where young girls walk backwards picking flowers. This looks a little different in different parts of Sweden, but there's the idea that if you pick 7 flowers and put them under your pillow on midsummer eve, you'll dream about the man you'll marry.
    Honestly, the least authentic part of the film is the nature around the commune. It wasn't filmed in Sweden and it shows.

    The fact that most of the horror takes place during the bright daytime makes it so much scarier imo. Love this movie! Btw I love your Bride of Frankenstein shirt. That's the greatest horror sequel ever made!

    The flailing around was because the community was connected through empathy, so they felt the pain of the elder who survived, they felt the volunteers burning, and when Dani was crying they were showing her that they knew how she felt, that she could share the pain.

    Pelle is such a stirrer lol obviously he planned this on multiple levels, but the moment right after Christian gets that sedative powder blown into his face is so telling. You see Pelle’s head peek into the shed, weirdly and knowingly. I feel like getting Dani was a huge bonus but Christian, Mark, and Josh were never supposed to make it back to America. Then they disrespected the culture (another thing Pelle *KNEW* their dumbasses would do) and that’s the cherry on the cake lmao and you just know that he and Dani are going to end up together. He’s already planted that seed into her mind, and into the commune as well

    Sometimes TOO many questions haha. But that’s fine. To answer one of them as best I can, “just because” haha. Why were the old people carried away in their chair? Just because. Just because that’s how the ritual is. 🤷🏻‍♂️

    • @Reusable_kidney
      @Reusable_kidney Před 4 měsíci

      Eh, wicker man was pretty good but this movie id say is better because of how much it is linked to an actual tradition, not completely accurate ofc but still based off of it slightly. It’s an amazing movie with great production, transitions and amazing detail, very beautiful scenery. Both are really good movies. Both films are very respectable and hey, if you really think this is a rip off, welcome to thriller/horror movies where 80% of them are ripping off the one before, as only the “original never done before” films were made way more than 30 years ago. just like art, everything has been done. It’s best to just appreciate it for what it is
